There was a stunning solar eclipse earlier today in Eurasiabut when is it Americas turn?
Tuesday, October 25, 2022 saw a partial solar eclipse in Europe, north Africa, the Middle East, central Asia and India today, with as much as 82% of the Sun being covered by the New Moon.
North Americans annoyed by being on the night-side of Earth for this celestial event should take comfort in the fact that their continent is living through a golden age of solar eclipses. In fact, European eclipse-chasers would kill for the kind of celestial luck coming the way of North America.
Heres the solar eclipse schedule for the rest of the 2020s, which comprises no fewer than six stunning events:

Total Solar Eclipse Over Oregon
The first total solar eclipse touching the continental United States since 1979 touches down on the Oregon coast between Lincoln City and Newport at 10:15 a.m. PDT. Before Oregon, the shadow of the Moon does not touch any other landmass or island.

Oregon will be one of the most popular states to view the eclipse. While the rest of the United States offers a longer duration of totality, sections of the eclipse path in Oregon offers the best weather prospects anywhere along the entire eclipse path.
Two major viewing parties are being organized in Oregon. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry has announced a viewing event at the state fairgrounds in Salem, see www.omsi.edu/eclipse-2017 for details. Traffic, especially in the Willamette Valley and Madras, will be extreme on eclipse day. Our recommendation is to arrive at least one or two days before. If this is not possible, leave very early in the pre-dawn hours for your destination in the path of totality. More on eclipse traffic and congestion here.
The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Nova Scotia
While Nova Scotia makes the list of provinces on the totality list, things here are similar to Tennessee and Michigan within the USA. Only a small portion of the province sees totality about 70 square miles but on the bright side, that is just about double the path area within Tennessee and Michigan combined, and there are actually quite a number of roads and even a few houses contained within the path here in Nova Scotia. As far as totality is concerned, we can only consider the very far northern coast. Locations like Meat Cove and Saint Margaret Village are noted, with Dingwall and even Asby Bay missing out. Most of the area of the province that lies in the path consists of mountains and rural forests, to be sure.
The shadow enters Nova Scotia at the beach to the west of Meat Cove at 16:39:24ADT, and leaves on the other side of Bay St. Lawrence, about as far northeast on the island you can get, at 16:41:05ADT. Less than a minute and a half spent in this far northern piece of land.

Safely Viewing The Eclipse
Solar eclipses can be viewed safely. The rules are simple keep on eclipse glasses while the Sun is not yet fully eclipsed. Once the sky suddenly turns dark, and the solar corona appears, then you can take off your eclipse glasses to look at the Suns amazing corona.

The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Pennsylvania
By now, totality is being enjoyed by folks both north and south of the international border! The eclipse path straddles the entire border all the way from SW Ontario up through New Brunswick! Well talk more about that once we describe the path through Ontario.
Meanwhile, The eclipse path through Pennsylvania cuts a reasonably large part out of the northwestern portion of the state. Entering the state at 15:15:35EDT on state road 305 just west of Akerly , the shadow misses Hermitage, Franklin and Bradford. However, Meadville , Erie , Edinboro , Wattsburg , Waterford , North East , Corry , Youngsville and Union City get tickets to the show! Warren is just barely inside the path, and sees less than a minute of totality if youre there, youll want to move north or west on US62 to get farther into the path.
Folks in Pittsburgh need to head north on I-79, up as far as Meadville or so. And Phildelphia only gets an 88% partial eclipse. Head north, and get into the path! And that goes for anyone in most of Pennsylvania: Harrisburg, Lancaster, State College, Altoona, Allentown, Williamsport your closest path to the path is north, into New York!
The shadow leaves Pennsylvania at 15:20:29EDT, at the state line on the shores of Lake Erie along Lake Road, just west of the Shortman Rd exit off I-90. Having visited the Commonwealth for just under five minutes, totality is on to its next state New York!

An eclipse of the Moon occurs when the Earth lies directly between the Sun and the Moon and the Moon lies in the shadow of the Earth. During a total eclipse, the Moon does not disappear entirely but turns a deep, dark red. Type: Total Solar Eclipse
Would you travel halfway across the world to experience one minute of totality? For eclipse chasers, that’s more than enough, so the tiny Exmouth Peninsula the only part of Australia crossed by the path of totality is sure to be bursting with observers from around the world. Exmouth is also the place to swim with whalesharks, the ocean’s biggest fish at 40ft.

The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Oklahoma
Louisiana misses being in the path by only about 8 miles. Anyone planning to view from Shreveport will only see a 98% partial eclipse. Again, thats kind of interesting but you can be in the path with only a short drive west to Tyler , or points further west. The drive will be worth it!
Totality first touches Oklahoma at 13:43:52CDT, at the southernmost bend of the Red River in an isolated spot down Grassy Lake Road, just south of Kemp. Only the far southeastern portion of the state is in the path, with Idabel and Broken Bow being the largest towns near the centerline. It only takes about 9 minutes for the Moons shadow to completely cross this small strip of Oklahoma, so enjoy those moments in the shadow while you can!
Oklahoma City and Tulsa residents need to head Southeast, to get into the path and experience totality! Its not that far, and you will truly be glad you did!

When Is The Next Solar Eclipse Going To Happen
The next solar eclipse will occur on October 23, 2023, but this one will be an annular eclipse. This occurs when the Moon is far enough away from Earth in its slightly oval-shaped orbit that it doesn’t cover the Sun completely. The Sun appears around the Moon’s limb as a “ring of fire.”
The next total solar eclipse begins on April 8, 2024, at 15:42:10 Universal Time , when the shadow touches down on the Pacific Ocean, and the Moon takes its first small bite out of the Sun. The Moon’s shadow will trace a path of totality all the way from central Mexico, across Texas, up through New England, and into the Canadian Maritimes. The full eclipse begins at 12:38:47 UT the longest totality will last is 4 minutes and 29 seconds. Tens of millions more will see a partial eclipse, provided skies are clear.
Great North American Eclipse Of 2024
This is the one to get excited about and, if you get yourself beneath a clear sky, it will provide you with that long transcendental totality you always wanted. Called the Great North American Eclipse because it also crosses Canada and Mexico, the events of April 8, 2024, could be era-defining and unforgettable. At lunchtime, totality will sweep across Mazatlán, Durango, and Coahuila in Mexico, then Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Vermont, and Maine, ending over New Brunswick and Newfoundland in Canada.
Austin and Dallas, Texas, will enjoy totality for over four minutes , and only slightly less will be visible from Indianapolis, Niagara Falls, and Montreal. Just like in 2017, anyone standing outside of the 100 miles-wide path of totality will see a partial solar eclipse. New York will see an 89-percent eclipsed sun, while Los Angeles will see 49 percent, Las Vegas 51 percent, Denver 65 percent, Washington D.C. 87 percent, Columbus, Ohio 99 percent, and San Antonio, Texas a staggeringly close 99.9 percent. However, these are not the places to remain in get yourself to the path of totality. Less than 100 percent might as well be 0 percent.

As the sun began to rise on Tuesday, the moon wedged itself into Earths orbit to put on a celestial show part of one, anyway.
The partial solar eclipse, visible from Europe, northern Africa, the Middle East and Asia, became visible first in Reykjavik, Iceland, at 8:58 a.m. local time. The shadow will be peak around 4 p.m. in Chelyabinsk in Russias southern Ural region, which is expected to get 79 percent coverage, before waning in New Delhi at 5:30 p.m. with 44 percent coverage.
Images of the eclipse began circulating on social media and in live streams early Tuesday, with photographers posting photos from across the suns path. Though some had to contend with clouds blocking the view, others were able to get clear looks, revealing a full bite out of the sun. At its most striking, it looked like a chubby, orange crescent moon.
Because the moon is smaller than Earth, the moons shadow covers only a small part of Earths surface and is visible only from certain regions.
How Does A Solar Eclipse Work
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon blocks the sun either in part or in totality, as seen from Earth. As the moon makes its orbit around Earth, and as Earth orbits around the sun, the moon gets caught in the middle and casts a shadow on Earth. Anyone standing in that shadow will be able to see the solar eclipse.
Robert Massey, the deputy executive director of the Royal Astronomical Society in the United Kingdom, said before the eclipse that the wow factor varies depending on where you observed it.
In London, he said, the eclipse would be a bit wow, but in Chelyabinsk, which is no stranger to astronomical events, the eclipse would produce a medium wow. In India, eclipse viewers would get to see the moon take a bite out of the sun as the sun begins to set, which in itself is a spectacular thing to see, Dr. Massey said.
Either way, Dr. Massey said, if youve never seen one before, its a great experience.
Of course, it all depends on the weather forecast. A cloudy day will ruin any hopes of viewing.

The Next Total Solar Eclipse Visible In North America
The map above shows all the total solar eclipses taking place in North America during the 21st century. You can see that the next total eclipse for North America will occur on April 8, 2024.
This might make it seem as if total solar eclipses are somewhat rare, when, in fact, theyre not. They happen about every 18 months as seen from somewhere in the world. However, for any given spot on Earths surface, total solar eclipses dont happen very often, if even during a persons lifetime. The fact is, you might have to travel to see an eclipse.
The next total solar eclipse will cover three countries, including 11 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces . It will start in Mexico, travel across Texas, and then continue north-northeast, taking turns between the U.S. and Canada in the northeast before it exits the continent over Newfoundland. If the weather is benign, this promises to be an even better eclipse in terms of length of totality than the total eclipse of 2017, because the path of totality will be wider.

Clouds Could Rain On Your Parade
Weather has a habit of happening, and a cloudy sky could ruin your eclipse-watching endeavors.
Current weather forecasts show clear skies in most of the Middle East, Pakistan, and India, as well as eastern Kazakhstan and the and Altai regions of Russia.
Europe is a mixed bag, with southern areas set to enjoy a cloud-free sky. In large parts of central and eastern Europe, clouds are predicted to melt away during the eclipse, so dont give up if the sky is cloudy at the beginning!
What Is An Eclipse
The two types of eclipses that we witness here on Earth are solar eclipses and lunar eclipses:
- A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun, partially or entirely blocking out its light. Solar eclipses are visible only in certain areas and require eye protection to be viewed safely.
- A lunar eclipse occurs when the full Moon enters the shadow of Earth, which cuts off all or part of the sunlight reflected off the Moon. Lunar eclipses are technically visible from the entire night side of Earth, but during a penumbral eclipse, the dimming of the Moons illumination is slight. Learn more about lunar terminology.
Not all eclipses are the same, however. There are a few different ways for lunar and solar eclipses to happen:
- A total eclipse occurs when the Moon or Sun is entirely blocked out.
- During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon is completely obscured by the dark center of Earths shadow , giving the Moon a dark, reddish hue.
- During a total solar eclipse, the Sun is completely obscured by the Moon, resulting in a brief period of awe-inspiring darkness.
