Can Hail Damage Solar Panels

Large Hail And Severe Hailstorms

Testing Hail Damage to Solar Panels!

Although most solar panels are made of tempered glass that is less prone to cracking than ordinary window glass, under the impact, theyre still vulnerable if struck by a large enough hailstone traveling with significant speed.

Reports show that the most destructive storms are the ones that have large hailstones, especially those with diameters of 1.5 inches or more.

The problem with large hailstones is not so much their weight. But rather the speed at which they impact a surface after being carried by high-speed winds through updrafts in thunderstorms. Speed is key because it takes energy to cause damage. The greater the energy, the more likely the solar panels will be damaged.

Large hail can cause the toughened solar panel glass to shatter or can cause dents in the panel. It can alsoinduce microscopic fractures in the silicon photovoltaic cells.

If the toughened glass layer is compromised then its likely that water will find its way into the solar module. Moisture within the panel may cause a decrease in energy output, a cell short-circuit , or even irreparable damage, potentially destroying the panel.

As a word of caution, its wise not to touch a broken solar panel or solar array since contact might result in a short circuit. Always contact your local experts or technicians for help or repair when you notice apparent solar panel hail damage.

Can Solar Panels Be Destroyed By Hail

Quality solar panels like the LG brand panels used by solar energy professionals are extremely resistant to damage from hail. Solar panel manufacturers test their panels to withstand hail up to 25mm in diameter. While your current roof is susceptible to damage from all sizes of hail.

Are solar panels insured against hail?

Solar panels that are not attached to your home, such as floor mounted panels, may be covered under your home insurance policy under cover from other structures. However, some insurance policies exclude coverage for damage to solar panels caused by wind or hail.

What Is Hail And Why Does It Occur

  • Hail is formed when moisture gets pushed upwards by drafts and freezes together in the cold upper regions of thunderstorm clouds.
  • The heavy hailstones drop down to the ground from high up, gaining momentum and finally hitting objects in their trajectory.
  • On average, hailstones measure around 0.2 in diameter and can be round, elliptical, or jagged, featuring a smooth or rough surface.
  • However, hailstones can measure up to 5.9 in diameter. Like a snowball, the hailstones can gather additional moisture and mass based on the conditions in which they form.
  • Hailstones can damage objects such as vehicles, buildings, and crops. Hailstorms also pose a risk to the safety of people and animals outdoors.

Solar Panel Module Frame Materials

Solar panel frames are usually made of welded or modular metal pieces. The frame may also be a unique shape depending on the installation area and feature holes or ridges for easier installation. Solar panel frames can be made of various materials like wood, but the top choices are weather-resistant metals.

Use A Layer Of Methacrylate Coating

Solar power and extreme weather in Australia

Methacrylate coating is another effective way to protect your solar panels from hailstones. The reason why this method works is that methacrylate acts as a hail guard for the solar panel underneath it. When hailstones hit the coating, the solar panel has more strength to repel impacts to it. As the methacrylic coating is quite thin, light easily passes through it.

How Are Solar Panel Modules Tested For Hail Resistance

Most solar panel manufacturers submit their solar panel modules to a test called the Solar Hail Test or Solar Hail Impact. Machinery gets used to hurl real or mock hailstone ice balls at solar panels. The hailstone projectiles are usually fired at the international standard of 50 mph but can get shot out faster or slower.

Other tests include firing tennis balls at the panels, standing on them, driving cars over, and submerging panels in water. The panels should be waterproof and able to withstand weights of at least 113 lbs. per square foot. Of course, tests and results vary per solar panel, type, quality, and manufacturer, but generally, solar panels are hardy and durable.

How Often Do Solar Panels Get Damaged By Hail

To put it simply, not very often!

In May of 2017 an intense hail storm hit the Denver area causing damage to roofs, cars, and windows.

The national renewable energy laboratory in Colorado, home to over 3,000 solar panels, was particularly hit hard with employees finding dents and damage to their car windows from ice balls the size of a golf ball.

Incredibly, upon inspection, researchers discovered that only 1 out of 3,168 solar panels had sustained any damage. That is a strong solar energy system!

Purchase A Solar Panel Hail Protector

Buy a solar panel protective cover that you can position over the glass surface of the panel when severe storms are forecasted. If its impossible for you to find a protective cover that matches your panels design, a few alternatives you can try include a piece of plywood, a heavy blanket, or a tarpaulin.

You should ensure that the solar panels surface is not scratched. Moreover, you should avoid banging a bulky item against the panels to prevent any damage.

Transparent plexiglass can serve as a permanent cover for RV solar panels however, it can minimize the amount of sun exposure absorbed by the panel, so energy output is lessened.

A flexible mounting framework can also offer protection as this enables you to put your panels at a vertical angle when severe weather is forecasted. If you position your panels vertically, less surface space would be open for the hail to hit.

How Can I Protect My Solar Panels From Hail

Solar: Will hail damage my Solar Panels

You can purchase solar panel protective covers, but bear in mind that they will limit or eliminate the panels ability to harvest power from the sun. That means you need to only put them on if there is a threat of major storms, so you will need the right early invention alerts as well. There is a range of weather apps you can download for your phone that will alert you to severe storms in your area so that you can act and add these covers to your solar panels.

Always ensure you have comprehensive insurance coverage so that you will not have to shoulder the full cost of replacing your panels if a severe storm does strike.

Preparing your solar system for extreme weather will increase the possibility of keeping it safe. If you concentrate on the weather forecast, you can take the necessary steps to make a reliable solution.

Hazardous weather like storms, hail and thunderstorms can bring danger to the solar panels. After getting the weather forecast, you can wrap the solar panel with a cover.

How Long Do Solar Panels Actually Last

Typically, solar panels last around 25 to 30 years. However, that does not mean that they stop producing electricity after 25 years it just means that energy production has decreased by an amount that manufacturers consider significant.

Can solar panels last 50 years?

Solar panels last about 20 years, according to the Federal Trade Commission. The good news is that with proper maintenance, your panel can operate for 40 to 50 years.

Do solar panels lose efficiency with age?

The rate of degradation is the rate at which solar panels lose their efficiency over time. A panel with a degradation rate of 1% per year will be 10% less efficient after 10 years. This means that after 25 years of use, around 4 out of 5 solar panels are still operating at 75% efficiency or better.

How Likely Is It That Panels Will Be Damaged

Solar panels are made from tempered glass and as such will resist hail stones on most occasions. In order to pass Australian standards, they must be able to withstand the direct impact of hail stones with a diameter of 35mm or approximately the size of a golf ball.

However, hail stones that are larger than this can cause panels to smash, so we suggest informing your home and content insurance provider that you have solar and to check that hail damage is covered.

What Type Of Solar Panels Is Best Against Hail Damage:

To find whether the solar panel which you are installing has passed hail test you can check its datasheet and see whether it has passed the IEC 61215 test.

The above screenshot is of Canadian solar panel datasheet, as you can see from the screenshot this solar panel has IEC 61215 certification and its load-bearing capacity is 6000 Pa.

Almost all the big solar panel manufacturers have IEC 61215 certification so dont worry about that. But if you receive frequent hailstorms in your region then it is best to buy a solar panel with high heavy snow load capacity .

I think solar panels with snow load capacity of 6000 Pa is the a good option to look for.

Now if you look at a bifacial solar panel they have less front load-bearing capacity.

As you can see above, the Canadian solar bifacial solar panel has the IEC 61215 certification but the overall loading capacity is 5400 Pa which is lower than the standard panel.

It makes sense, that the solar panel which has high front load-bearing capacity will be more resistant to a hail storm that the one having less.

Hence, you should look into load-bearing capacity when you receive frequent hail storms, but if you dont receive hail storms then buy the solar panel which is affordable and has good efficiency.

Can Solar Panels Be Damaged By Hail How To Protect Them

To say the weather in Colorado is irregular would be an under statement .

While The Centennial State enjoys 300 days of sun annually, the other 60 can feel like the world is coming to a frozen end.

Each year, the Front Range is sieged by torrential downpours and thunderstorms.

Also hail.

Particularly hail.

So, the single largest question Colorado homeowners have when considering adding a solar PV arrangement to their home is about hail damage.

Solar contractors get asked questions such as “Can hail break the panels?” or “Does my insurance policy cover hail damage?”

In short, yes: hail can and does harm solar panels, but that damage is covered by home insurance policies.

That said, the likelihood of hail actually damaging your solar panels are extremely slim.

In May of 2017, an extreme hail storm tore through the Front Range. It had been so damaging that it took the Colorado Mills mall out of commission for a year.

Interestingly, the National Renewable Energy Lab is situated about two miles from the Colorado Mills Mall.

Of the 3,168 solar panels on the laboratory building, only 1 was ruined by the same hail storm.

Furthermore, while energy production definitely dropped during the storm, the panels started to perform as nothing happened once it passed.

This is a testament to the strength of this modern-day solar panel.

A June 2018 storm left tennis ball-sized hail across the Northern Front Range eventually shattered select West is facing panels.

The National Renewable Energy Lab in Golden, Colorado, can attest to the resilience of solar panels against extreme weather. NREL is home to an enormous solar energy system consisting of 3,168 rooftop- and ground-mounted solar panels. In 2017, a severe hail storm hit the greater Denver area and the NREL campus.

Despite hailstones up to 2.75 inches in diameter being reported in the area and the countless cars and windows that were damaged only one of the facilitys 3,168 solar panels sustained damage. Thats a major testament to the resilience of solar panel systems.

Solar Batteries Power You Through Extreme Weather

While solar panels can stand up to hail and hurricanes, it doesnt necessarily mean theyll provide power after the storm. If your solar panels are grid-connected and theres a power outage, your panels will shut off even if theyre in perfect working condition.

Solar batteries can help you continue to harness energy from the sun even if the grid is down. Your solar batteries will generate electricity for your home, and your panels will continue replenishing your batterys power reserves with solar energy until the grid is back up and running again.

While solar batteries are often seen as an investment, Sunrun offers flexible financing options and affordable solar plans so that you have easy access to the clean, renewable energy you deserve.

Our solar plans also include free monitoring and maintenance. If your panels or battery are underperforming , well fix or replace them for free so you can keep powering forward.

Hail Storms Are A Common Hazard In The Us Midwest Find Out The Risk Of Your Solar Panels Being Damaged In The Next Hail Storm

Did you know that the record for a hailstone in the United States is 8 inches? According to CNN, a giant hailstone discovered in South Dakota was the size of a volleyball and weighed almost two pounds. Yikes!

If an 8 inch hailstone hit your solar array, there definitely would be damage. Luckily, hail like this is extremely rare. But what about more ordinary hail?

Solar panels are designed and tested to withstand hail that is rated up to severe by the US National Weather Service, which is hail up to one inch in size or with wind gusts up to 58 mph. Hail smaller than this or moving at a slower velocity shouldnt cause any damage to your solar array.

However, very severe hail – that is, hailstones larger than one inch or accompanied by very strong winds – can damage solar panels by shattering the front side glass panel. While not very common, it does happen, as was the case with this solar farm nean San Antonio, Texas:

If you live in parts of the US Midwest where hail storms are most common, there are a couple measures you might take before installing solar panels on your home, such as buying solar panels with stronger front side glass and checking or updating your insurance policy.

How Strong Are Solar Panels Against Hail

    solar

Solar panels are built for strength against all different types of weather events, natural disasters, and daily issues. Most solar panel manufacturers use tempered glass instead of plate glass to protect the silicon filaments. Tempered glass is four to five times stronger than tempered glass and doesnt scratch. So your solar panels will survive through severe weather events and come out the other side without a scratch.

Well-made solar panels are protected by a thick layer of tempered glass that can tolerate a substantial amount of hard impacts . Tempered glass is known to withstand moderate hail and comes with a high safety rating so that it can be used outdoors for many years.

Reports surrounding hail damaging solar panels after a heavy storm are mixed. Some homeowners report no damage, while others highlight the presence of small cracks and scratches on the surface. Even if external cracks are minimal to none after a hailstorm, the modules internal solar cells and components could be damaged by the impact of hailstones hitting the surface.

File A Claim With Your Insurance Provider

Once you have your written estimate, contact your insurance company. The adjuster should assist you in the process to make sure that they repair or replace your panels. Depending on the provisions of your policy, you may have to pay a deductible before the insurance pays or reimburse the remaining balance.

How To Confirm If Your Panel Is Damaged After Hail

After hail occurs, you might be wondering whether your solar panel is affected or not. To confirm this

First, make a visual inspection. Take a distance from your solar panel stand and sight from afar if the panels are smashed.

Smashed or cracked solar panels are always more visible from a distance especially when the crack is quite faint.

Sometimes, the crack or damage can be so faint that you might not be able to see it. So the next step is to check your inverter.

Much hail damage on solar panels is always detected by your inverter. To confirm damages from the inverter, look at the inverters display screen for a red light signal.

If there are damages showing such as ground or earth faults, or there isnt any indication of power being generated, then there might be an issue and you might need to contact your solar professional for further investigations.
