How A Solo Stove Works

Can You Cook On The Solo Stove Bonfire

solo stove yukon how it works

Yes and no they dont currently have any official ways. As of 7/15/21, Solo Stove is taking preorders for their new grill system! I guess they heard the people and answered! Read on if you want to know whats possible without it.

You can cook all the normal stuff on a stick, but for anything that needs a long amount of time to cook you may have to play with it. I plan on bringing a grill top for our next trip to set on it and see if we can cook some sausages or hobo meals. My thought is, if you get the embers low enough then maybe. But the Solo Stove burns so well that it might just burn out before your food is done. I will update this after trying it!

Solo Stove Bonfire: Review

The Solo Stove Bonfire is made of 304 stainless steel. Given its size 19.5 wide x 14 tall it is reasonably light at 20 pounds.

The unit comes in a storage sack and seems durable so long as its not abused. But the pit is not heavy-duty iron like those less expensive fire pits sold at Walmart or other outlets with camping gear.

Dont plan to huck logs into it a Solo Stove willy-nilly. You should be a little more gentle.

Starting a fire is easy with good kindling just build a tee-pee or cabin with small fuel and light it. We had a good blaze in minutes, and then we added some wrist-size branches. The fire soon roared.

Once burning, the Solo Stove Bonfire burned hot and efficiently. The structure gets very hot, so dont touch or move it until the fire is well out.

The dont-touch-it facet is was one thing we didnt think about before testing once this thing is lit, youre committed for a while.

Thats fine at a campsite or in a backyard. But some kind of handle or way to grasp the hot fire container would improve the product in case you need to douse the blaze early and move on.

Overall, this is a highly effective fire pit. For anyone in need of a backyard blaze without all the smoke, the Solo Stove Bonfire is an excellent choice.

Should I Get A Solo Stove Bonfire Or Yukon

Both the Solo Stove Bonfire and Yukon feature innovative airflow technology, stainless steel design, portability, minimal smoke. Therefore, if you want to choose between the Bonfire and Yukon, it would be best if you consider your buying purpose and requirements.

Go for the Bonfire model if you are getting it for your balcony, porch, or any limited outdoor spot, and arranging a small gathering of 3-4 people.

But if you are getting the fire pit for your backyard or a larger outdoor spot and for a gathering of 4-7 people, you should consider getting the Yukon model.

In this way, you can get the perfect Solo Stove model for you!

If youre familiar with any of the other Solo Stove offerings, you know that people love to use them for cooking purposes. Unfortunately, this one is not built for that kind of application. You see, the other portable pits are smaller, which makes the whole thing possible. Additionally, theyre built with prongs, which this model isnt.

What Makes The Solo Stove Unique

When talking about the Solo Stove, we are not just talking about one individual product, but rather the brand behind a whole line of innovative and unique apparatuses designed for burning wood. From fire pits to camp stoves, all Solo Stoves merchandise is built with a signature airflow design that makes it stand out from other backyard wood burning products.

360° Airflow Design The feature that makes the Solo Stove most unique is its Signature 360° Airflow Design. The use of strategically placed holes both at the bottom and top, along with a double-wall structure, allows for air to be drawn in from the bottom, fueling the fire at its base. Preheated oxygen then makes its way through the top holes to fuel the higher flames. This increase in airflow and a secondary burn is super-efficient, resulting in plenty of heat, very little smoke, and a warm, enjoyable fire. This method of wood burning is also extremely enjoyable to watch. And on an even better note, your Solo Stove fire will burn for hours leaving a surprisingly small amount of ash behind.

Smokeless As mentioned above, the unique airflow design of the Solo Stove makes it a virtually smokeless way to enjoy a backyard fire pit or sit around a campfire. With airflow moving through holes on the top and bottom, smoke is merely circulated along with the airflow, never leaving the structure, and making its way to your eyes, hair, and clothes.

How Solo Stoves Work

Solo Stove Campfire Explained

The Solo Stove fire pit is made of premium grade stainless steel. In fact, its produced with a double-wall construction, allowing cooler outside air to come in through holes at the bottom, moving between the two walls.

Because this air is pre-heated, it reaches the top vent holes and then flows over the flame. This process creates a secondary burn, which is how the Solo produces such little smoke.

As youll see throughout this post, its incredible technology and one of the best purchases weve made!

What Type Of Fuel Can I Use With My Solo Stove

Sole Stove camp stoves use twigs, sticks, leaves, and other biomass as fuel. Any firewood can be used with the fire pits, though hardwoods such as hickory, oak, and maple will produce longer burning fires than softwoods. An alcohol burner is also available for the Solo Stove Lite and Titan for those who prefer an alternative fuel source.

Can You Touch The Side Of A Solo Stove

No, not while its burning or has recently been lit. Remember that metal conducts heat very well you could burn yourself badly by trying to touch the side of a burning Solo Stove product.

Make sure that the fire has been extinguished and the Solo Stove has been given plenty of time to cool down before you touch it. Metal loses its heat quickly , so you shouldnt have to wait too long, but never try to touch a hot Solo Stove, even with gloves on.

If its cold out, your Solo Stove will cool faster, but you should wait at least half an hour after the fire has burnt out before you start trying to handle the Solo Stove. Solo Stove recommends waiting until the metal is completely cool before you try and empty the stove out.

Camp Stove Nesting Pots

I have a titanium pot that I love, and that has accompanied my backcountry adventures for decades. But I couldnt resist the stainless steel nesting pots for the Lite and for the Campfire , and they are so nice to have! The Pot 900 holds, you guessed it, 900 mL of water, and weighs 7.8 oz. The Pot 4000 holds 4,000 mL of water and weighs 1 lb 13 oz.

The stove and pot each come with their own carry sack, and that helps keep everything tidy and clean.

Both camp stoves in their stuff sacks and nesting pots:

Why Is My Solo Stove Smoking

Solo Stove Campfire Review Is It Worth $100? (Yes!)

As stated before, the design leads to an efficient fire that isnt paired with much smoke. Unfortunately, people sometimes misread this and think that something is off with the bonfire when they see smoke. Its impossible to achieve the kind of fire that the Solo unit achieves without any smoke at all.

The bonfire is designed to be nearly smokeless in operation, but you cant ignore the presence of the word nearly in the equation. Though the smoke is minimal, its not non-existent. Furthermore, when your bonfire is only starting to get going, it can present a little more smoke than usual.

Is The Solo Stove Bonfire Really Smokeless

Solo Stove is known for their unique bonfire design that maximizes airflow and the burning process for a more complete burn with little to no smoke.

Per their instructions, the key is to keep the stack of logs below the secondary air vents. So as long as you can refrain from overfilling it, then yes, it truly smokeless â or nearly smokeless.

Here is a video that explains how it works, and then weâll go over the pros and cons of this bonfire pit as well answers to some of the questions Iâve received from readers.

Competition: Solo Stove Bonfire Vs Biolite Firepit

Unlike the Solo stove, you can burn both firewood and charcoal in the slightly less expensive Biolite Firepit . It has a similar hyper-efficient airflow technology and portability but also has a grill gate, see-through mesh, and gives you the power to control the size of your flames manually or remotely with the free Bluetooth app.

We prefer the sleek look of the Solo Stove for a backyard staple but might opt for the Biolite if we needed a versatile firepit to keep us warm while camping.

Enjoy backyard bliss.

All in all, we loved the Solo Stove Bonfire. Its best if youre looking for a traditional campfire ambiance in your backyard with no fire-building effort and hardly any smoke. The fire is powerful, efficient, and the whole thing is portable when you need it to be.

Are Smokeless Fire Pits Worth The Money

Smokeless fire pits create less smoke than standard fire pits. Then they re-burn that smoke to get rid of almost all the fuel particles that are left. This process renders the air flowing out of the fire pit as smoke-free as possible.

If youd like to avoid being inundated with smoke while trying to enjoy a backyard bonfire, smokeless fire pits are definitely worth the money. Theyre typically not much more expensive than regular fire pits and offer the benefit of less smell, less smoke, and less hassle.

    How Solo Stoves work..
  • Flame Ring: Designed to keep the fire centered and even. Sits securely on top of the fire pit when in use and flips over to nest inside the fire pit when stored.
  • Secondary Burn: The double walls direct preheated air through the upper vent holes resulting in a beautiful second burst of flame to minimize smoke.
  • Precision Base Plate: Allows oxygen to be fed into the embers from below to burn fuel faster and hotter.
  • Ash Pan: Catches spent ash to prevent from clogging vital airflow.
  • Airflow: Rising hot air and the absence of oxygen created by the combustion process pulls air through the bottom vent holes. This airflow fuels the fire at its base while also providing fuel for the secondary burn.
