Florida Senate Approves Controversial Fpl Solar Plan

Pointing to issues such as expanding renewable energy, state regulators Tuesday approved a $1.8 billion plan by Florida Power & Light to add 20 solar-power plants by the middle of next year.

The Florida Public Service Commissions decision came after its staff recommended rejecting the utilitys SolarTogether program because of the way it is structured. The plan also drew opposition from the state Office of Public Counsel, which represents consumers in utility issues.

But commissioners said the program, which involves adding a total of 1,490 megawatts of solar capacity, will expand renewable energy and reduce the states reliance on fossil fuels to generate electricity. FPL had backing from Walmart, the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy and Vote Solar, after reaching an agreement with the retailer and the solar-advocacy groups last year.

The commission approved the settlement agreement because this unique solar program is in the public interest of the state of Florida and offers FPL customers the opportunity to advance renewable energy in Florida, commission Chairman Gary Clark said in a prepared statement after the vote. The new solar additions will serve to reduce the risk of higher fuel and emissions costs for all FPL ratepayers.

But commission members Julie Brown and Andrew Fay on Tuesday disputed that the plan would offer an undue preference to customers who participate in the program.

    Where Are They Built

Is Florida Power And Light Net Metering The Best In Florida

FPL is not the only utility in Florida that offers net metering. Tampa Electric Company, Gulf Power, and Duke Energy all offer net metering programs with similar to structure to FPLs. All programs provide customers with payment for credits not used to offset energy bills by the end of the year. Of the four utilities, FPL has the highest application fee for Tier 2 and Tier 3 systems, though those costs are largely irrelevant to residential customers.

If I Participate In Fpl Solarnow Fpls Voluntary Solar Partnership Program Will It Reduce My Fpl Electric Bills

    • No. Participants do not see a reduction on their FPL electric bill. The program is created to provide customers with an easy way to support the maintenance of solar in local communities, which has a higher cost than the large, universal solar power plants that FPL generally builds in rural areas that have sufficient land. FPLs goal is to install 30 million solar panels by 2030, making Florida a world leader in solar energy.

Does Fpl Have A Community Solar Program

The answer to this one is a bit tricky. FPL has two solar programs that don’t require you to install solar panels on your roof, but they don’t operate like a true community solar program. Aggregate community solar projects as we know them are illegal in the state of Florida, as state law prohibits any entity besides a utility from selling electricity.

What Is Fpl Solarnow Fpls Voluntary Solar Partnership Program

    • In 2014, FPL received approval from the Florida Public Service Commission to launch a three-year voluntary solar partnership pilot program. The program, now known as FPL SolarNow, provides FPL customers with an easy way to support the sustainment of solar arrays in local Florida communities, without increasing costs on customers who are unable or choose not to participate. As of December 2020, the program has been extended through Dec. 3, 2025. Going forward, FPL SolarNow will continue to maintain and enhance the solar assets and provide educational activities.
    • This program allows FPL customers to support solar energy in their communities, where it can help grow interest and educate more people about solar. See full program details.

Don’t Be Fooled By Fpl’s Fake Community Solar

Florida Power and Light offers a solar rebate and all of the utilities governed by the state utilities commission offer net metering. Under the law they must credit customers for net excess generation in a month. If, over a 12-month period, they generate more power than they use, the utility must pay them.

    Fpl Benefits At Your Expense

Florida Power and Light is detailing how you can tap into solar energy for your home without the use
    • FPL is charging all customers to build SolarTogether. Every FPL customer will feel this in the form of higher monthly electric rates.
    • FPL is not able to set rates on its own. It needs approval from the state Public Service Commission. The commissions approval of SolarTogether will allow FPL to charge customers more.

Dont Be Fooled By Fpls Fake Community Solar

Utilities use fake community solar programs to maintain their control over the energy system.

True community solar enables individuals, businesses, or organizations to buy or lease a share in a specific, nearby solar installation. They are then able to receive a credit on their electric bill. This credit works the same as if there were a solar system on their own roof.

Utility programs keep ownership of energy generation in the hands of the utility. The latest example comes from Florida, where the Public Service Commission recently approved Florida Power & Light s SolarTogether program.

What Incentives Tax Credits And Rebates Are Available Tofpl Customers For Installing Solar

The major financial incentive currently available until the end of 2021 is the 26%federal solar tax credit. The way this works isthat the full cost of the system needs to be paid to the installer, and this tax credit can then be claimedback as cash when you next do your taxes.

Many states, local governments and utilities also offer incentives for homeowners who go solar. This helpcan take the form of state tax credits, rebates, tax breaks, SRECs or even performance-based incentives. The best part is that all of these incentives apply in additionto the federal credit.

Here is every incentive you may be eligible for as a FPL customer:

Does Florida Power And Light Offer Other Solar Incentives

No, FPL does not offer rebates or other solar incentives. However, FPL is invested in supporting Florida solar. In 2016, FPL built three 74.5 MW solar arrays, each of which have the capacity to generate power for about 15,000 homes. Since then, they have expanded their investment with goal of installiing 30 million solar panels in Florida by 2030.

North Port embraces FPL Solar Now program

If you’re looking to go solar, the first thing you probably want to know is “how much is it going to cost?”. The average homeowner in the Sunshine State can expect to pay about $2.59 per watt of solar installed.

In order to cover a monthly electric bill of $100, youd need to install around 5.82 kilowatts of solar in Florida, which would cost about $15,074 before the federal solar investment tax credit , and $11,155 after.

The following table outlines the average installation costs for different sized solar systems in Florida:

What Is Florida Power And Lights Net Metering Cap

The net metering capacity limit, or net metering cap, is specified by the state and followed by all utilities in the state. In Florida, individual systems cannot exceed 2 MW, but there is no aggregate cap for the utility as a whole. Florida Power and Light requires that systems not be sized to produce energy exceeding 115% of the households monthly kWh usage.

Sun Shines On Fpls Solar Program

Florida provides a wealth of opportunity for utilities building a solar power portfolio, and Florida Power & Light has taken a lead role with its dozens of solar energy centers.

Power generation companies are continually looking for ways to make their operations more cost-effective, in part by seeking out investments that will bolster the bottom line while maintaining their commitment to provide customers with reliable electricity. Many of those utilities want to take advantage of renewable energy resources, making cleaner energy a larger piece of their generation portfolio.

Florida Power & Light , a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Inc. that provides power for more than 11 million Floridians, has taken a lead role in providing solar power across much of the state, building dozens of utility-scale arrays, and working with businesses and homeowners in support of rooftop solar systems. FPL in 2019 announced its 30-by-30 plan, a program in which the utility pledged to install 30 million solar panels by 2030. FPL in June of this year said the program was more than 40% complete after just two years, with 42 solar energy centers in operation, including the Discovery Solar Energy Center at Kennedy Space Center.

What Will Happen To My Florida Power And Light Net Metering Bill Credits

The duration and intensity of sunlight differs across the year. As a result, a solar system that is designed to meet your total energy needs over the course of a year will overproduce electricity in some months and underproduce in others.

In months when your solar system produces more energy than you need to use, the energy will be sold back to FPLs grid in exchange for net metering credits. These credits can be used for a future energy bill in the same calendar year. Bill credits do not carry over across calendar years because of Floridas net metering policies. If you have credits at the end of the year, a cash credit will be offered on your January bill.
