How To Set Up Solar Panels For Your Home

Compare Your Solar Options: Rooftop Vs Community Solar

Do It Yourself Solar Power? – Easy DIY Solar Panel Installation!

Perhaps one of the most exciting aspects of the residential solar energy sector is the list of options for homeowners who want to go solar but do not have a suitable roof. Ground mount solar installations and community solar subscriptions are two common ways to access power from the sun without actually installing anything on your rooftop. Community solar involves connecting with members of a group or your neighborhood to share a solar system, while ground-mounted arrays are an easy way to own and install your own system while bypassing any roofing hurdles.

Connect Cables At The Fuse Combiner Box

Connect the Cables to the Control Panels

Run the electrical cable from the solar array into the house through the underground conduit. Connect the cables to nylon rope for easy threading, then pull through the conduit to inverter panels.

Connect the cables at the fuse combiner box located at the base of the solar array. The green cables are first connected to the grounding strip. The red cables are connected to the PV out positive terminal block and the black cables are connected to the PV out negative terminal block.

How Do You Make A Solar Panel

To build your own solar panel, you need to assemble the parts, connect the cells, build the panel box, connect the panels, seal the box and finally assemble the finished solar panel. To build a solar panel, run the flux lines along each cell strip to the back of the cells, then use a soldering iron to secure half the length of the mitered wire from above.

How Many Solar Panels Do You Need To Power A Home

Were going to be honest with you, the question How many solar panels do I need? isnt that helpful, and frankly, it makes things more complicated than they need to be. The exact number of panels on your roof varies depending on the specific brand and model of the solar panels chosen.

The more relevant question is, What size solar panel system do I need? Solar systems are measured in watts and kilowatts where the kW rating is the maximum generation of the system installed. An average size system in 2021 is around 8 kW. In 2021, solar panel models are around 370 watts each, meaning on average people are installing around 22 panels.

If you want to know the number of solar panels you need to power your specific home you can use the solar panel cost calculator here.

Concentrating The Sun’s Rays

How to Set Up a Small Solar (Photovoltaic) Power Generator

The first practical instance of controlling the sun’s energy might have been when someone noticed that glass, held at the right angle, could set fires and burn ants. We’ve come a long way.

The first silicon photovoltaic cell was produced in the United States in 1954. Our current solar panels are a direct descendant of that technology. They’ve just been made more efficient over the years.

From the 1950s, various residential and commercial buildings were developed with different solar priorities. One office building gained recognition for solar water heating. Residential milestones went from sunrooms to hybrid solar/grid systems to standalone fully solar homes . In 2000, a Colorado family built a solar installation that nearly completely powered their home for its eight-member family.

Other useful innovations, besides roof-mounted solar panels, have popped up, including a modified version of a radiant heating system. By carefully routing the home’s plumbing, water can be heated by the sun and, as the water is pumped through the house, the heat can be dissipated to help control the house’s temperature. The beauty of that: It doesn’t add to the home’s electric consumption. In a nationwide solar home design competition in 2007, a group of students from Santa Clara University in California figured out how to use a solar radiant heat system to help cool the house as well as heat it.

A Solar Powered Generator Needs Panels

Well get the most obvious out of the way first. You will need a solar panel to charge the battery bank that you use.

The usual connector that will be used to connect the solar panel to the battery bank will be the MC-4 connector.

This is important so you can charge your generator up. However, Goal Zero solar panels use an 8mm cable instead of an MC-4, so understand your Goal Zero products so you get the right connection.

Diy Off Grid Solar System

Day by day the price of the solar panel falls gradually. But still, installation of a complete off-grid solar system is costly. So I write this instructable to get all the components of your solar system separately and assemble it all by yourself.

The Led Solar Tracker

How to Solar Power Your Home / House #1 – On Grid vs Off Grid

Your Panels will produce much more electricity when they’re kept pointing directly at the Sun as opposed to sitting in the one position all the time.To achieve this you need to buy or build a Solar Tracker and mount your panels on it.You have 2 choices here….you can opt for a “Dual Axis” tracker that will follow the Sun from East to West then, when the Sun goes down, return to face East again for Sunrise and will also adjust the North South angle to cater for Seasonal change.Choice 2 is to do as I did and build a Single Axis tracker that I can alter the North South angle of manually. The LED Solar Sensor Unit uses 2 Red LEDs to detect the position of the Sun.The innovation here is not mine.I bought the Actuator and the Sensor unit from Dave at .Dave’s a really helpful bloke who’s health doesn’t always let him build his units as fast as he would like. He’s a fair dinkum Aussie who’ll give it his best shot so support him. When ordering please bear this in mind and be Patient…..the units are well worth any wait.To test run the Actuator and Sensor units before committing myself to too much spending I built my Prototype tracker using my DIY 90 watt Panel. When I was satisfied that it was a good investment, which didn’t take long, I built the bigger unit to house the 3 X 70 watt and the 90 watt panels.

Evaluate Your Sunlight Exposure

More sun means more energy produced and a greater potential to save with solar. Certain states, like Arizona and California, average more sunlight hours per day.

Your home’s orientation toward the sun, the amount of shade and its roof type also affect a solar system’s output. You can estimate the efficiency of panels in your area by using the SolarReviews calculator. Enter your address and the average cost of your monthly energy bill.

An Engineering Review Is Normally Required

Every municipality has different regulations, but to have solar panels installed on your roof, a review from a structural engineer is normally required. Solar panels and their racking can weigh a lot, and an inspection by an engineer assures that the roof can support the additional load.

If you want to install solar on your garage, it will be subject to the same regulations. Your garage might not be built to the same standard as your house, so its even more important to have an engineer do an inspection. You wouldnt want to wake up one day to find that your solar array has crashed through the roof onto your car, or flown off in the wind and crashed in a neighbors yard.

Your solar installer will take care of completing any required permits and engineering reviews.

The Benefits Of Solar Panels

Why would you want home solar panels? Solar panels for your home come with many benefits:

  • Savings on energy: The most direct benefit is that you can gain the opportunity to power your own home outside of the electrical grid. That will save you money, and if you generate extra power, you might even be able to get credit on your bill from the electric utility.
  • Solar is an abundant power source: According to the US Department of Energy, just one hour of noontime summer sun meets the annual US electricity demand. Even if you’re in an area with a lot of rain or shade coverage, you can still save on your electricity bill.
  • Help with your home value: If you plan to sell your home down the line, having home solar panels can be a major perk to buyers and can help increase your home’s value.
  • Going green: Since solar is a renewable resource, you can minimize your carbon footprint.
  • Independence from electrical grid failures: Some areas have electrical grids that are less than reliable. If you experience frequent power outages in your area, your own solar power can keep the lights on.
  • Power your camping: Some small solar panel arrays fit right onto RVs or you can take them camping so you have electricity, no matter how remote the location.

A small solar power generator is a relatively cheap, sustainable way to generate off-the-grid power when you need it. For example, if you have a cabin that you cant connect to a power grid and you dont want to rely on a traditional gasoline-powered generator, you might consider installing a small photovoltaic solar power system. Before you get started, make sure you estimate how much energy you need the system to generate, which will guide you in choosing components for the system. After that, its pretty much just a matter of plugging everything in to start generating solar power and running your electrical appliances off it!

Calculating Your Power Needs

How To Setup A Solar Panel Grid For Your Home

How much electricity do you want to generate with your solar array? Answering this question is the most important aspect of your DIY solar project.

It will allow you to figure out how many solar panels you need, and, if desired, the size of your battery pack for solar storage. Your energy usage will also determine the inverter and charge controllers you need as well as the thickness of wiring and sizes of fuses.

Every electrical appliance is important to include in this calculation to get the total output wattage. You need the sum-total of all the electrical power demands from all of your appliances, like refrigerator, oven, hot water heater, computers, TVs, washing machine, dryer, hair dryers, clocks, lighting, electric baseboards, space heaters, cellphones, tablets, etc.

Begin by looking for the power consumption rating labels on all of your appliances and devices.

Some of them may have the wattage displayed. In other cases, youll have to figure it out based on the amperage or voltage thats given. Use this formula to make the conversion:

Watts = Volts x Amps

There are many online calculators to use when adding it all up. Or, you can set up a table like this:

Note: To fill out the fourth column, multiply the output wattage by the number of hours of use per day . Then add up all the values in the fourth column to get the total wattage you use per day expressed in kilowatt-hours .

Gear Required For A Grid

In a grid-tie, sometimes called on-grid, solar setup for rooftop, there are a few basic components needed for proper functioning.

  • PV panels
  • Mounting hardware
  • Pure sine wave inverter suitable to a grid-tie setup
  • DC or power optimizer
  • Grid disconnect
  • DC disconnect
  • Combiner box

Note: There are three different types of inverters that could work in a grid-tie system. Whatever your choice, make sure its a pure sine wave type of inverter. .

String inverter

String inverters are the most economical if you have a south-facing home with no shading issues. With this inverter, electric current from strings of several panels each are connected and feed into the inverter. If one panel in the string is affected by shading or it malfunctions, energy output from that entire string is reduced.

String inverter with a DC optimizer technology

A string inverter with DC optimizer technology overcomes this problem. A separate power optimizer is attached to each solar module in your array and functions independently of all the rest. All the DC coming from the optimizers is channeled to the inverter where the DC-AC conversion happens.

With this type of inverter, shading or malfunction would affect only specific panels . It is possible to monitor each panels operation with this type of inverter.

Microinverter

A microinverter is a type of inverter attached at each panel. DC to AC conversion occurs there. Then, the AC is channeled together from your roof and feeds directly to your home AC breaker box.
