How Is A Solar Eclipse Different From A Lunar One

One of the most frequently asked questions about these two events has to do with the differences that separate them. The answer to this question is very simple. The differential aspect between both eclipses has to do with the name they bear.

A deep partial solar eclipse comes one week from today. Nearly all of Europe gets a view

Great American Eclipse

Another big difference lies in what is blocking the sunlight. In the case of the lunar eclipse, it is the Earth, while in the solar eclipse, it is the Moon. Duration, frequency… are other fields in which both natural phenomena find their inequalities.

April 30partial Eclipse Of The Sun

The dark shadow cone of the Moon will completely miss the Earth, passing approximately 750 miles below the South Pole. But the Moons outer shadowits penumbradoes scrape a part of the Southern Hemisphere. This causes a partial solar eclipse, visible to a varying extent around sunset across a swath of the South Pacific Ocean and South Americas southern and western portions: Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, southern Peru, southern Bolivia, western Paraguay, and a tiny slice of Brazil.

The greatest eclipse will take place over the South Pacific Ocean, 300 miles to the northwest of Yelcho, a Chilean Antarctic research base in South Bay, Doumer Island. The normally thick horizon haze may redden the Suns light, giving it the appearance of a slice of cantaloupe melon.

Times listed are Eastern Daylight Time.

  • Partial solar eclipse begins: 2:45 p.m.
  • Greatest eclipse: 4:41 p.m.
  • Partial eclipse ends: 6:37 p.m.
  • Magnitude of eclipse: 0.639

Where In The World Can The April Partial Solar Eclipse Be Seen

It will be visible from a narrow and sparsely-populated belt spanning the southeastern Pacific Ocean, the Antarctic and some South America countries such as Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia and Peru . Unfortunately, this partial solar eclipse will not be visible in North America or Europe. The duration of the eclipse will be just under four hours.

The April 30, 2022, eclipse will be a partial, but deep, eclipse, similar to the eclipse in this photo. Its visible from the southeast Pacific and south South America. James Trezza in Cedar Beach, Mount Sinai, New York, captured this photo of the partial solar eclipse on 6/10/21

Where And When Can I Watch The Lunar Eclipse

Full Moon Lunar Eclipse, The Awakening REALM, Elkhart, November 8 2022 ...

The eclipse will be visible for a large portion of the world, including those in the Americas, much of Europe and Africa, and parts of the Pacific. Joseph Rao, an associate astronomer at the Hayden Planetarium in New York, estimates that some 2.7 billion people should be able to catch at least part of the eclipse.

Not long after sunset, the left-hand side of the moon should start appearing dusky. But the main event kicks off about 10:28 p.m. Eastern time, when the moon enters Earths central shadow, known as the umbra. At that time, it will begin to look like something has taken a bite out of the moon.

When the moon is about three-quarters of the way into the umbra, it should start lighting up with a reddish hue, like your electric range just when the coils begin to glow, Mr. Rao said.

At 11:29 p.m., the moon will be in the deepest portion of the Earths shadow and the total eclipse will begin in earnest. The eclipse will peak shortly after midnight, at roughly 12:12 a.m., and remain that copper color until after 1 a.m. The moon will leave the umbra at 1:56 a.m., regaining its pearlescent hue as the work week begins.

The quirks of celestial mechanics mean that totality when the moon is blood red and in the deepest shadow lasts longer than average, roughly 1 hour and 25 minutes, giving skywatchers ample opportunity to savor the event. This makes it the longest total lunar eclipse visible for much of the United States since August 1989, Mr. Rao said.

How Does A Total Lunar Eclipse Work

First off, a lunar eclipse can only take place at Full Moon because this is when the Moon is directly opposite the Sun in the sky. If the Earth at that time aligns with the Moon and the Sun, the Earths shade falls on the Moon, and the lunar eclipse is formed.

A total lunar eclipse goes through four general phases:

  • Penumbral phase is when the Moon passes through the Earths outer shadow called the penumbra. This phase is unnoticeable to the naked eye.
  • Partial phase is already great to observe. The Moon enters the darkest part of the Earth’s shadow called the umbra.
  • Full phase is the most dramatic part when the entire Moon is within the umbra.
  • Maximum eclipse is the middle of a total phase. Its when the Moon is right in the center of the umbra. The totality lasts until the Moon begins leaving the umbra shadow. On the way back, the Moon repeats the initial and the second phases.

When Is The Next Solar Eclipse In 2023

The only time it’s safe to look at the Sun during an eclipse is at a total solar eclipse. Although much of the event is a partial solar eclipseexactly as what is happening next weekduring a total solar eclipse there is a brief period of between one and seven minutes in the middle of the event when the Sun is completely blocked by the moon. This is called totalityand its incredible! There are a host of visual traits, the highlight of which is the chance to look at the Sun is incredible corona, it’s hotter, outer atmosphere, which looks simply majestic as it shines in the dark sky as the temperatures drop around to you. Wow!

The next time anyone will be able to experience totality is on April 20, 2023, when a very short totality of around a minute will come to Exmouth Peninsula in Western Australia, Timor-Leste and West Papua. After that, on April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will come to North America, plunging a 120 miles wide path of totality from Texas through Maine into an incredible four-minute darkness of the day. That too will be an unforgettable experience.

Solar Eclipse Myths And Superstitions

In our technological age, relatively rare occurrences like total solar eclipses are well understood by scientists, and thanks to the news and internet, we know eclipses are coming well in advance information about what they are and what to expect are readily available, and so we look forward to them. But in the days when life was harder and accurate information scarcer, eclipses were often seen as a mysterious and unwelcome disruption of the natural order.

How Many Eclipses Do We Have Each Year

Most years have four or five eclipses, but its possible to have a year with six, or even seven. For seven eclipses to be possible, a single eclipse season must fall during December and carry over into the new calendar year. The last time we saw a year with seven eclipses was 1982. If you dont remember that, you may still be around to see the next one in 2038.

Its All About The Angle Of The Orbit

It turns out that the answer to both of those questions, above, is connected to the angle of the Moons orbit, which is inclined about 5° from the ecliptic, another name for the Earths orbit around the Sun. For eclipses to happen with every full or new Moon, the Moon and Earth would have to orbit at the exact same angle .

It takes the Moon a little less than a month to orbit the Earth. In that time, it crosses the ecliptic plane twice. Each of these crossings is called a node. If the Moon is new or full at the time it crosses, a perfect alignment of Sun, Moon, and Earth, called a syzygy , occurs, resulting in an eclipse.

This is also why solar and lunar eclipses tend to fall within about two weeks of one another. If the Moon approaches close enough to the ecliptic during a full Moon for a lunar eclipse to occur, it will once again approach the ecliptic about two weeks later, when its new, causing a solar eclipse, and vice versa.

When Is The Next Solar Eclipse

After the Oct. 25 partial solar eclipse, we’ll have to wait until 2023 for the next time the moon will cross in front of the sun. There are two solar eclipses in 2023.

The next immediate solar eclipse will occur on April 20, 2023 and will be a so-called hybrid solar eclipse. This is an eclipse that can look like an annular eclipse, also known as a ring of fire solar eclipse, from some parts of its track and a total solar eclipse from others. This eclipse will be visible from parts of southeast Asia, the East Indies, Australia, the Phillipines and New Zealand, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

After the April 20 solar eclipse, there will be an annular solar eclipse on Oct. 14, 2023. This eclipse will be visible across parts of North America, Central America and South America, with the “ring of fire” effect visible from the western United States, Central America, Columbia and Brazil.

If you can’t wait that long, there will also be a total lunar eclipse on Nov. 8, 2022.

Counting On The Sun And Moon

Man has always looked to the heavens, particularly to the Sun and Moon, to mark the passage of time, and provide social stability daily and seasonal cycles have always been very important to agriculture-based societies. So what happens when the regular, predictable pattern of day and night, and light and dark that we all depend on, is unexpectedly disrupted?

Imagine yourself as a simple farmer in ancient times, out working in the fields, and suddenly, without warning, it begins to grow eerily dark, with the Sun still high in the sky. You glance upward to see what looks like a bite being taken out of the Sun. Sometimes the bite becomes larger and larger until the Sun seems to disappear altogether, leaving only a ghostly halo. It grows so dark that you begin to see the stars twinkling in the sky as if it were night. Pretty frightening, right?

Its understandable, then, that solar eclipses were met with anxiety and dread. And its no surprise that folklore, myths, and legends about our most prominent celestial neighbors abound in many cultures around the globe.
