How To Charge Battery With Solar Panel

Ac Power From An Inverter

Charging a Car Battery with a Solar Panel and Charge Controller

An inverter is connected to the battery and converts the DC power from the batteries to AC power. With AC power you can directly connect the phone charger to the AC output and charge as you would with electricity.

In this scenario the solar panel charges the battery and the inverter provides AC power to charge your phone.

Energy Consumption Of Devices Or Appliances Over Time

To calculate your power requirements to make sure that your solar panel system is capable of running your home electrical grid. You also have to consider how much power your appliances or devices will consume over a period of time. Considering this aspect will give you an idea of how much power your system should deliver to run your home 24/7. Power is measured in Watts, and you have to get the value of power consumption over a period of time which is measured in WH.To calculate for the power of your home devices will consume over time you have to multiply power consumption by the number of hours the devices will be used.

Power Consumption Over Time = Power X Hours of Use

For a better picture, to compute for the power consumption of a TV that uses 20 Watts of power used for 5 hours a day. It will be mathematically represented on the equation indicated below.

TVs WH = Power Requirement X Hours to be Used

TVs WH = 20 X 5

The TVs WH = 100 WH

This means that if you are going to use a TV with 20 Watts power requirement for 5 hours a day, its total power consumption over time will be 100 WH. To calculate your total home power consumption, you can do this computation for every single appliance or device at home then sum up all the results you will get. This will lead to an accurate value of how much power or energy your entire home electrical grid will consume.

How Fast Will Solar Panel Charge A Battery

There are a few factors that affect how long to charge a 12v battery with a solar panel such as battery capacity, solar panel watts, average daily sun hours, the intensity of the sunbeam, the solar controller efficiency, weather temperature and humidity, and many more.

However, for the sake of simplicity, we will only focus on the three main parameters, which are solar panel watts, battery capacity, and average peak sun hours.

Calculate your batterys charging speed is pretty easy. All you need to do is to follow this simple formula:

For instance, if we want to charge a 100Ah battery using a 100-watt solar panel, then it would take around 12 hours of direct sunlight AKA 2-3 days.

However, this is not accurate, as we didnt consider the batterys depth of discharge.

Assuming 80% DOD, the time to fully charge a 100Ah deep cycle battery with a 100-watt solar panel would be around 9 and half hours.

We put together a list of the most common 12v battery capacities and how fast will a 100-watt solar panel charge them:

Use the cables that come with the solar panel, these are UV-resistant cables. Other cables will crack and break over time when they are exposed to UV radiation. This is the part when you need to oversize the diameter of the wire to account for voltage drop. Try to keep the voltage drop under 3%. to calculate the voltage drop.

What is voltage drop?

Voltage drop is a phenomenon that appears when you have a long cable that delivers energy from point A to point B. The length of the cable increases the resistance in the cable which will reduce the voltage at point B.

For example, your solar panel delivers 18 Volts DC and 5.8 amps to the charge controller and the wire length is 40 feet.

As you can see in the calculation, the voltage drop is 4.09% which will reduce the overall power delivered to the charge controller.

Lets calculate the amount you will lose: 0.74 volts x 5.8 amps = 4.3 Watts.

This is not much, but if you have multiple panels, this can add up quickly. It could be that in your country the voltage drop may not be above 3% by law. To reduce the voltage drop, you use thicker wire.

The final version will look like this:

How Can You Figure Out The Size Of The Solar Panel Required

When deciding what size of solar panel you need to charge your equipment, please note that this could differ depending on your criteria. Such criteria involve your budget, setup location, what devices you prefer to run with it, and future power plans.

It is asserted that larger solar panels have reduced expenses hence, its ideal to choose larger models that could generate up to 5 kilowatts. Nevertheless, the solar panel system depends on electricity consumption. So, youll need to do the math for that.

Before doing the computations, lets first uncover the following terms for measurements:

Watt = W

Voltage = V

Amp-hour = Ah. Ah is one of the actual numbers you should consider when investing in a battery. It refers to the amount of power that you could save in a battery.

Now, lets proceed to calculate watt-hours:

To determine the watt-hours, you would need to multiply battery amp hours with the battery watt. Then, you need to compute the total watts of the solar panel you require to do so, divide watt-hours by the number of hours of sunlight that the panel obtains.

Lastly, with the total watts, you only need to multiply it with the efficiency tag, which is approximately 15 to 20%. Afterward, you only need to add this to the total to obtain the actual watts of the panel you need to set up.

This is how it goes:

Watt-hours = battery ampere-hours x battery watt

Total watt-hours of the solar panel = watt-hours divided by the number of hours of sunlight per day.

Why Not Take The Highest Efficiency In Any Case

A solar panel with a good efficiency is generally going to cost more than a solar panel with a lower efficiency, because of the newer and more complex manufacturing processes.

There are solar cells with efficiencies up to 40%.They are not used on a large scale because their price per Watt can be up to 100 times higher than for residential panels. It would therefore not make sense because they would therefore never be profitable. This type of cell is only used by applications where size and weight are the most important factors, and where cost is secondary .

So choose wisely based on your needs. Owning solar panels with a lower output is not necessarily a bad thing if you have enough space on your roof or on your land, as they will allow you to reduce the total price of your installation and therefore make it profitable more quickly. Of course, you need to consider other factors such as the quality of the solar panel, its heat resistance, impact resistance, life expectancy to make the best choice for your situation.

At Sunslice, our goal is to make portable solar chargers that are high-performance, ultra-compact, lightweight, good quality while remaining affordable.

Choosing A Battery For Your Camper Or Rv: The Cliff Notes

  • Economical choice: Flooded lead acid. This is the oldest technology in the bunch. If maintained properly, they still are the cheapest short-term and long-term. Maintenance is more involved and must be managed more carefully due to ventilation and liquid acid inside. It is not hard to do, but for small amateur systems they arent as appealing.
  • Low maintenance: AGM Deep Cycle. Over the long term, this is the most expensive battery because they wear out faster than the other two. In the short term, they are cheaper than lithium. They are common and all around a good starting point for most amateur installers.
  • Premium choice:Lithium LiFePO4 These batteries are just around the corner from being the best choice for everyone. Unfortunately, the high up front cost is a barrier to many.

How Long To Charge 12v Battery With Solar Panel

Without knowing the charging state, its impossible to tell you what it takes to charge a 12v battery with a particular solar charger.

How fast a solar panel could charge a battery depends on its current sourcing ability also.

So, we are assuming a fixed charging efficiency of a solar charger so determine what it takes to complete the charging. So,

Our solar charger offers 85% charging efficiency. So, panels output power will be 85w if its putting out 100w. If our charger output is 12v, its average output current will be,

85W/12V = 7.083A.

So, to charge a 200A-hr battery the calculation would take,

=200A-hr/7.083A

=28 hrs.

That is means a wholly discharged battery would take this time in direct sunlight to fully charge up.

This may be possible in some countries around the globe but initially not practical for most of the places. Its an optimistic calculation that assumes proper panel ventilation and deducts few other inefficiencies, however, its decent beginners point calculation.

Can I Connect a Solar Panel Directly To a Battery ...

The solar panel size required to charge 12v 7ah battery will depend on the wattage of the solar panel and the size of the battery. If there is no grid connection available, it will take approximately 16 hours to fully charge a 7ah battery using a 100W solar panel.

Solar panel batteries are a must for off-grid or powerless setups. To charge a battery, you need to know the wattage of the solar panel, the voltage of the battery, and amps needed. You will also need an inverter to convert DC power to AC power needed by your solar battery charger.

Solar panel direct connection to battery what happens to the voltage and current?

The proof of the pudding is in the doing I always like to run tests to verify solar theory and sometimes the theory comes down in flames lets see:

  • I measured the terminal voltage of a partially discharged 90Ah deep-cycle lead-acid marine battery to determine its State of Charge.
  • First, I hooked up a 100 watt solar panel directly, and measured the voltage & current.
  • Next, I connected the panel to the battery through an MPPTsolar charge controller, and measured volts & amps.

The table below compares the battery charging readings in both cases:

Solar Charging 90Ah Varta Deep-Cycle Lead-Acid Battery.

Volts = 12.31V = State Of Charge 65%

Battery Charging Voltage

3.3 amps

9.5 hours

Surprisingly, there isnt a great deal of difference. The battery was 35% discharged and pulled a healthy current as would be expected.

Its interesting that the MPPT controller is outperforming the raw solar panel output. This is because the controller is adjusting its internal resistance searching for the Maximum Power Point.

The question is: If the charge currents are similar, why bother with a solar charge controller at all?

The answer is to be found at the end of the charge cycle and the battery is fully charged. Ill leave it on the MPPT controller and then connect up the solar panel direct again to check voltage and current.

See you in 11 hours time!

  • Terminal battery voltage = 15.5V
  • Charge current = 2.5A
