On April 8, 2024, the Great North American Solar Eclipse will cross the country, plunging a 124-mile-wide swath of land stretching from Mexico to Canada into night-like darkness.
First, the crowds gather, spreading out picnic blankets, setting up lawn chairs and stringing up hammocks. There’s a social, even jovial atmosphere until the sunlight begins to dim, and an unnerving shadow seeps across the entire landscape like a rising tide. The chatter quiets as eyes lift to the sky. And finally, it happens the sun is consumed entirely by a pitch-black disk, nighttime arrives in the middle of the day, and everyone gasps then cheers.
The spectacle of a total solar eclipse is an awe-inspiring moment, one that many skywatchers travel the world to witness. In 2017, the United States experienced its first total solar eclipse in nearly 40 years, with an impressive 88 percent of the adults in the country turning out to view the show.
Now, the next one is on the horizon. Two years from today, on April 8, 2024, the Great North American Solar Eclipse will nearly bisect the country, plunging a 124-mile-wide swath of land stretching from Mexico to Canada into night-like darkness.
Two years might seem like a long time away, but given the popularity of total solar eclipses, it’s just about time to start making viewing plans, especially if you plan on traveling for the event.
The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Quebec
Quebec sees totality first at Akwesasne at 15:24:52EDT, where residents and visitors will see 2m26s.
The path travels up the St. Lawrence river, and barely includes Montreal. Here, the river, the airport, and the downtown area are just barely in the path but the northern suburbs are not. Laval itself, for example, lies just outside the northern limit. Many people will be treated to a wonderful view , but it is important to remember how much totality falls off as we approach the path limits especially on the northern limit . At the University of Montreal, there will only be just about 1m in the shadow and at the curling club near Connaught Park, weve lost about 15 seconds of totality. And going the other direction, if you cross the river to Brossard, youll get a full extra minute!
Sherbrooke might be a better option though were hoping the entire population of Montreal doesnt invade their neighbors at eclipse time!
Heading further east, Drummondville lies right on the northern limit, and Victoriaville lies just outside it. Again, Sherbrooke may be your better option given favorable weather, of course!
The shadow continues eastward, and leaves the province at 15:32:47EDT in the woods east of Saint-Théophile, among all those little glacial lakes near the border with Maine. Quebecs total time in the shadow of the 2024 eclipse? Less than eight minutes

When Is The Next Total Solar Eclipse In The Us
A total solar eclipse will block out the sun across the U.S. on Aug. 21 in a major event thats been dubbed the Great American Eclipse but it wont be the first or last time the country will see the astronomical phenomenon. To witness the next total solar eclipse in the U.S., though, Americans will have to wait another seven years.
The Aug. 21 total solar eclipse is unique in that it will be visible all across the U.S., with the moon appearing to completely blot out the sun in parts of 14 different states at different times throughout the day. That includes parts of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and North and South Carolina. The eclipse will start in Lincoln Beach, Oregon at 9:05 a.m. PDT and end in Charleston, S.C. at 4:09 p.m. EDT. For those in the path of the total solar eclipse, it will last two minutes and 40 seconds at most.
After Aug. 21 passes, the next total solar eclipse visible from Earth will pass through parts of South America and the South Pacific July 2, 2019, when the lunar disk will cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 33 seconds.
But the U.S. will have to wait another seven years for the next total solar eclipse to fall within its borders. According to NASA, on April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will stretch diagonally across the U.S. from Texas through the Northeast U.S. Heres a map showing the path of the 2024 total solar eclipse:

A partial eclipse will be visible to the entirety of North America.
The longest duration may technically be in Mexico, but at no point does any of the USA or Canada experience any less Totality than the maximum available in 2017.
So if you thought 2017s total solar eclipse was good, you aint seen nothing yet! Most places along the track experience about four minutes of Totality, which is about as good as it gets this century.

As you may know, a partial solar eclipse is taking place today on planet Earth. Sadly, it’s only possible to see it from Chile, where observers will see up to 54% of the Sun eclipsed by the moon just before sunset. Expect incredible photos!
North America is living through a golden age of solar eclipses. By now you will have probably heard about the next total solar eclipse coming to North America in 2024. Just a few weeks ago the two-year countdown began to what will be a jaw-dropping totality on April 8, 2024.
However, there are plenty of other solar eclipses coming to North America that have not been as well publicised.
In fact, in the remainder of this decade no fewer than six solar eclipses will be viewable from the U.S. and Canada!

A total solar eclipse will take place at the Moon’s ascending node on Monday, April 8, 2024, visible across North America and dubbed the Great North American Eclipse by some of the media. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s apparent diameter is larger than the Sun’s, blocking all direct sunlight, turning day into darkness. Totality occurs in a narrow path across Earth’s surface, with the partial solar eclipse visible over a surrounding region thousands of kilometres wide.
Occurring only one day after perigee , the Moon’s apparent diameter will be larger than usual. With a magnitude of 1.0566, its longest duration of totality will be of four minutes and 28.13 seconds near the town of Nazas, Durango, Mexico , and the nearby city of Torreón, Coahuila.
This eclipse will be the first total solar eclipse to be visible in Canada since , the first in Mexico since , and the first in the U.S. since . It will be the only total solar eclipse in the 21st century where totality will be visible in the three-state set of Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

What Is A Total Solar Eclipse
For a total solar eclipse to take place, the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. Weather permitting, people located in the center of the Moons shadow when it hits Earth will experience a total eclipse. The sky will become very dark for a few minutes, as if it were night. Normally, when looking at the Sun, you can only see the photosphere, the bright surface. However, extending about 5,000 km above the photosphere is the region of the solar atmosphere called the chromosphere. It is only seen during total solar eclipses, or with sophisticated telescopes, and its red and pinkish color gives the blackened Moon a thin halo of color against the greyish corona. People in the path of a total solar eclipse can also see the Suns corona, the outer atmosphere, which is otherwise usually obscured by the bright face of the Sun.
A total solar eclipse is the only type of solar eclipse where viewers can briefly remove their eclipse glasses, during the few moments when the Moon is completely blocking the Sun.

Where Will It Happen
The total solar eclipse will begin over the South Pacific Ocean. Weather permitting, the first location in continental North America that will experience totality is Mexicos Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT. The path of the eclipse continues from Mexico, entering the United States in Texas, and traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. The eclipse will enter Canada in Southern Ontario, and continue through Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Cape Breton. The eclipse will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NDT.

“The Eclipse of the Century”
1918
The path of the eclipse on June 8, 1918, started south of Japan, went across the Pacific Ocean, and then across the United States. The largest city to see totality was Denver. The U.S. Naval Observatory obtained a special grant from Congress to send a team to Baker City, Oregon to observe the event. Howard Russell Bulter, an artist and physicist, painted a picture of the eclipse after only watching it for 112 seconds. The 1918 solar eclipse was the last time totality crossed the continental United States, from the Pacific to Atlantic.
1925
The total solar eclipse of January 24, 1925, was seen by perhaps millions of people in the Northeast United States, including the New York metropolitan area. People went out into the streets, on top of buildings to catch sight of the event. In addition to the regular spectators, researchers, and observers from around the U.S came to New York to study the eclipse. Data, photographs, and records were collected from airplanes and dirigibles dispatched for a better view.

1979
On February 26, 1979, eclipse viewers in the Pacific Northwest caught sight of a total solar eclipse. Totality was experienced in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and North Dakota. Many people traveled to view this eclipse since it would be the last total eclipse observed in the continental United States until 2017. Unfortunately, cloudy skies obscured viewing of the eclipse in certain parts of the region.

The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Chihuahua
A very tiny portion of the state of Chihuahua sees totality. Almost totally contained with the small De Palomas lakes region, this piece of the state sticks far enough into the path that a determined person could hike the 8 miles or so east from the lakes, and get a respectable 3 full minutes of totality! Do not attempt this unless you are experienced, know what you are doing, and are able to fully accept the physical risks that hiking in this forbidding desert area might bring. If you are successful, we would love to hear all about your Chihuahua eclipse experience!
The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Michigan
Before moving east, lets talk about Michigan. As in Tennessee, only a very tiny sliver of the far, far Southeastern portion of the state will be in the path and that will be right along the edge. Were not talking about Detroit, either its not even close. Ditto Monroe or Adrian theyre not in the path. Not even Temperance or Lambertville will see totality, either they both lie outside the path! We mean only a few square miles of the absolute tiniest, most southeastern slice of Michigan is in the path. I-75 is in the path, coming north out of Toledo but only as far as the exit at Erie Road! Theres just not many places in Michigan to see totality, but if youre set on doing it from here, the Lost Peninsula Marina will see over a minute. Anywhere east of state road 125 will be in the path, but keep in mind youre near the northern limit this means that edge effects will reduce the amount of actual totality you see. The Bedford Hills golf club is barely on the edge, and anywhere west of that is not going to see totality. Best of luck if youre viewing from Michigan but if you do get to see totality, tell us your story! There wont be many people who see 2024s totality from here, and wed like to hear how it went for you on eclipse day!
