Breaking: Lg Exiting Solar Panel Manufacturing Business

The pandemic appears to have taken another solar scalp. South Koreas LG announced a short time ago it is ditching solar panel manufacturing globally.

The decision was made by LGs board of directors in South Korea yesterday after a comprehensive review of the impact of rising material and logistics costs along with supply constraints on its solar business.

SQ spoke to a source at LG who said they only heard the news themselves a few hours ago so the Australian team were probably as surprised as everyone else. While it was heard on the grapevine factories were going to be adjusting solar panel production levels, it turns out that level was zero.

LG solar panel production will wind down over the next few months before ceasing completely. As for current customers, the company says:

LG stands behind its brand and will honor the limited warranty with each product sold.

The Australian LG Energy web site similarly states:

We will fully honour our warranty obligations in accordance with applicable regulations

Our source at LG said the company was keeping megawatts of solar panels in warehouses for warranty claims in the future if needed. And for the most part, they might not be.

LG panels are well-regarded as being very robust, highly reliable and super-efficient, and backed by a 25-year product warranty attributes reflected in pricing of LG solar panels.

A Growing Market For Solar Manufacturers

Following a global trend, the U.S. solar market has boomed in the past decade. Approximately 40% of all new electricity generation capacity installed in the United States in 2020 was from solar PV, up from 4% a decade earlier. In 2020, the U.S. solar industry employed roughly 242,000 people and had installed over 2 million solar PV systems.

The trend should only continue: with the extension of tax credits and other incentives, the U.S. Energy Information Administration predicts that declining costs and the pairing of solar with battery storage will lead to solar being among the most economically competitive sources of electricity.

The United States was the birthplace of the modern solar industry, due to government support for research and developmentmore than any other country. In the 1970s, 90% of solar manufacturing worldwide was based in the United States. Today, most of that manufacturing has shifted to Asia.

Performance Of Lg Solar Panels

For this portion of EnergySages LG panel reviews, we used the temperature coefficient to evaluate solar panel performance. The temperature coefficient indicates how well your solar panel will perform in less-than-ideal conditions. Solar panels, like other electronics, operate at their best when they are kept cool . The temperature coefficient gives you a sense of how your panels performance will change during hot sunny summer days.

For every degree above 25° C , your solar panels electricity production will decrease by its temperature coefficient. For example, LGs LG370A1C-V5 panel, from its NeON R ACe product line, has a temperature coefficient of -0.3%/° C. This means that, if the panels temperature increases by one degree from 25° C to 26° C , its electricity production will be reduced by -0.3%. If its temperature increases all the way to 35° C , electricity production will decrease by 3.0%.

Temperature coefficient is an important metric to consider because your solar panels will likely see more than a few hot and sunny days over the course of each year. Ideally, the temperature coefficient should be as close to zero as possible a panel that has a temperature coefficient of -0.4%/° C is preferable to one rated at -0.5%/° C. LGs solar panels offer above-average temperature coefficient ratings, ranging from -0.40 to -0.29%/° C.

Is Lg Promising Warranty Support In The Future

LG has a history of ending product lines that arent performing well. It did so in 2021 when it ended its decades-old smartphone business. A lot of people still own LG phones, and the company still supports many of those phones with an additional year of warranty coverage and operating system updates. Thats a good sign.

Unfortunately, LGs smartphones werent as well-regarded as its solar panels, and they also arent designed to last for a quarter-century, so this isnt a perfect apples-to-apples comparison. Still, a commitment to support the products from a shuttered arm of the business is a good sign.

In its announcement, LG said that it plans to keep producing solar panels through the second quarter of 2022 to maintain adequate inventory for future service support. The companys solar panel warranties say it will repair, replace, or offer pro-rated refund for products that prove to be defective in materials and workmanship during the 25-year coverage period.

If youre one of the thousands of homeowners with LG solar panels, you can feel reasonably confident that the company will be there for you in the event that its products fail to meet your needs.

What Does This Mean For Lg Solar Employees

LGs exit from solar panel manufacturing will impact about 160 employees and 60 contract workers at their campus in Huntsville, Alabama. LG has stated that it hopes to retain many of its employees and is working to identify new opportunities for employees of LG Solar within LGs other business units. However, for those who arent transitioning to new roles within the company, theyll receive severance packages commensurate with their tenure with the company.

Latest Solar Panel Manufacturing Trends

LG NeON2 340 Watt solar panels now in stock

There are several trends to keep an eye on that will shape the future of solar and renewable energy in the U.S.

In August 2022, Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which increases the federal solar tax credit from 26% to 30%, where it will remain till end-2032. The 30% tax credit is available for all types of solar power projects including home solar panel installations and additional credits are available for utility-scale projects.

Therefore, we should expect more construction of photovoltaic power stations or solar farms in the coming years. This is good news for areas with outdated electrical grids or struggling power infrastructure. Cities needing clean energy sources due to increasing electric vehicle ownership can also benefit from these projects.

In response to the increased demand for solar power projects, as well as the extension of tariffs on imported solar equipment, top solar manufacturers are expected to expand production and operations within the country. Solar panel technology will continue to improve across various aspects from power output and efficiency to profile and weight. Mono PERC modules will be one of the top choices for residential solar, as demand for high-performance PV modules continues to increase.

Where Are Solar Panels Assembled

The top 10 solar manufacturers in 2017 are headquartered in four countries, with most concentrated in China. But as you can see, in the diagram below, these companies have a complex web of production facilities across the globe.

Jinko Solar, who topped the list at number one, has assembly plants in Portugal, South Africa, China, and Malaysia. This goes to show, one manufacturer can have several production facilities within many different countries making it difficult to track exactly where a batch of panels are made. This only adds to the complication of determining where the materials that made those panels were originally sourced from.

The news comes just weeks after solar panel import tariffs were significantly weakened.

A couple of weeks ago, the Biden administration faced a heavy lobbying effort to remove tariffs from solar panels imported from China, which has an enormous, subsidized solar production industry riddled with the alleged use of forced labor. We thought that was a bad idea.

Unfortunately, the administration didnt agree. While the president actually extended the tariffs, he did cut their reach way back by excluding a significant section of solar imports altogether. Solar installers who dont care where the panels they install come from rejoiced. More business for them! Domestic solar manufacturers that were using the tariffs as cover to build out production capacity didnt.

Todays decision places at risk billions of dollars in existing investment, thousands of jobs, our countrys energy security and a climate-critical transition to net-zero emissions, said Mark Widmar, chief executive of domestic panel manufacturer First Solar, to the New York Times.

That same article pointed out that since the tariffs first went up in 2018 some new manufacturing plants had opened since the tariffs were imposed, like Jinko Solars facility in Florida, LG Electronics in Alabama and Hanwha Q CELLS USAs in Georgia. And some existing companies, like First Solar, had expanded operations.

After a Feb. 22 decision approved by the board of directors in South Korea, LG Electronics announced it will exit the global solar panel manufacturing business. The company cited increased material and logistics costs, as well as severe supply constraints, as the main reasons behind the decision to stop solar panel manufacturing.

LG will cease production at the 550-MW solar module assembly plant in Huntsville, Alabama, by June 2022. The Alabama plant, which began panel production in 2019, was likely the second-largest crystalline silicon solar panel manufacturing facility in the United States. The company said the 160 employees at the plant and 60 contract workers will be assisted with finding work within LGs other businesses. The Huntsville campus is also home to LGs technical call center and service training center.

LG largely made solar panels for the residential and small-commercial markets. Just this past October, the company launched a new all-black solar panel using gap-free technology for an output rating of 405 W.

In the most recent EnergySage Solar Marketplace Intel Report , LG was recognized as the third-most quoted solar panel brand in the U.S. residential market, behind only Panasonic and REC. Industry analysts Roth Capital Partners suggest that LG represents 14% of U.S. residential solar module supply.
