You’ve also heard a lot of media buzz around the Tesla Solar Roof lately, but aren’t sure if it’s worth the cost. The result is that Tesla’s Solar Roof will cost nearly $25,000 more than installing solar panels, and yet will only deliver 77 percent as much solar electricity .

is Tesla solar roof available? Tesla thinks its clever solar panel roof tiles are ready for primetime. Now in their third iteration, Tesla announced its new Solar Roof tiles are now available to order and installations will begin in a few weeks. ‘ Moreover, the tiles come with a 25-year warranty, putting them on par with traditional tiles.

Likewise, how much does a Tesla roof really cost?

Tesla has announced that an average price for a solar roof is $21.85 per square foot. This is for a roof with 35% solar tiles and the rest of the tiles non-solar. That cost increases for higher percentages of solar tiles, with Tesla offering up to 70%.

How much power does the Tesla roof generate?

A typical solar panel produces about 290 watts. For its part, each 8.65-inch X 14-inch tile on the Solar Roof has two solar cells that generate a maximum of 6 watts. That means each tile can generate a maximum of 12 watts.

Solar Roof Replacement Cost: A Simple Breakdown For Homeowners

Solar power continues to grow as people and homeowners find more sustainable ways to live to help the environment and save money on energy costs over time. One of those ways people are living sustainably is by installing solar roof panels.

Solar roof panels can power your entire home without the reliance on the electrical power grid. This can save you a lot of money over time, depending on your location and usage. Google has created a fun tool called Project Sunroof that allows you to plug in your address and determine how much money you could save switching to solar power, plus a customized solar analysis including estimated cost.

If you find that you could make back the money you pay for the installation of solar panels over time, then youll want to start looking into companies and the cost to replace your roof with solar panels. This post should help you get a ballpark idea of what that solar roof cost may be.

How Much Do Tesla Solar Panels Cost

While Tesla is known for high quality , the company actually advertises its solar panel systems as the Lowest-Cost Solar Panels in America. Is that a fair claim to make?

Kind of. The cost of solar panels depends on a number of factors, including the size of your system, installation complexities, available local tax incentives and more. Given all of these considerations, though, Tesla seeks to ensure it can truly follow through on the lowest cost claim via its price-match guarantee. Through this program, homeowners can present a recent quote from a competitor for a similar system, and Tesla will match the price.

In general, the average Tesla solar system of about 8.2 kW will cost a home $11,840 , while an extra-large system of 16.3 kW will cost $22,200. Tesla estimates that most homeowners recoup that investment in six to eight years.

If you want to see how much a Tesla solar panel system would cost for your home, you can use the companys design feature. And to get a free quote to compare from a top installer in your area, you can fill out the form below.

Tesla Solar Roof Controversy: Whats Next For The Solar Roof In 2021

The Tesla Solar Roof project has faced delays, lawsuits, and criticism since announced in 2016. As of 2021, however, many of those issues have started to smooth out, and Teslas Solar Roof could face a brighter future.

Elon Musk announced the Solar Roof all the way back in 2016, when the company was in the process of acquiring SolarCity. Musk was the chairman and largest shareholder for SolarCity, and his cousins effectively ran the company. Some criticized the deal for being rife with conflicts. Despite the criticism, the SolarCity board agreed to a $2 billion buyout from Elon Musk.

Since 2016, Musk has fired executives and involved himself personally with the project. According to Bloombergs Dana Hull, Musk sees the Power Roof as essential to his vision of becoming more than just a car company.

Today, Tesla continues to install Solar Roofs across the United States. However, the company has faced criticisms for its slow rollout.

In 2019, Musk claimed Tesla would launch a new Solar Roof that would be cheaper, faster, and easier to install. He wanted Tesla to install 1,000 Solar Roofs per week, with sales continuing to grow like kelp on steroids over the coming months and years.

Two years later, Tesla is purportedly struggling to hit 200 installations a week. Tesla has also faced criticism for hiking the price of the Solar Roof after customers are already under contract.

In Some Cases The Price Even Doubles

Tesla Solar Roof cost and availability: How to buy Elon Musk

Reports from several outlets indicate that the cost of Teslas solar roof panels is going up considerably.

As first noted by Electrek, Telsa has increased the price of its solar roof. When a writer at publication looked into decking out their roof with Tesla solar panels last summer, the price was roughly $54,996 USD . Now when they spec out the same roof size, the price ranges from $79,938 USD to $100,621 USD .

Solar Views says the March price increase is related to the dummy shingles that Tesla requires to create more complex roof designs. These shingles are used whenever the company needs to cut a shingle to fit a complex corner or angle.

Earlier in 2021, Elon Musk said that the Solar Roofs will be available to Canadians later this year. However, the exchange rate and the rising cost of these tiles are likely going to put them out of reach for lots of people. You can watch how the solar panels react to snow here.

If youre unable to wait for a Tesla Solar Roof, there are other companies in Canada like Mitrex that offer similar services and products.

Tesla Solar Roof: How It All Came Together

In January 2021, Nochta switched on his new roof. His 1,175-square-foot roof has enough solar-harvesting tiles to generate 7.6 kilowatts of power. The Tesla Solar Roof uses a mix of solar tiles and dummy tiles the latter used at the edge of the installation to enable teams to more easily cut edge tiles down to size and fit the roof seamlessly to the house.

Nochta first installed solar panels on his house in 2016, supplied by SolarCity. SolarCity merged with Tesla later that year.

The first installation was less than three kilowatts â not much energy, which meant the couple was using slightly more than they produced. But as the household grew to add children and parents, Nochta discovered it was surprisingly difficult to expand the existing solar panel system to add more capacity. The new panels would have to work as part of a dual system, with two inverters feeding into the house.

These inverters are vital for getting solar power into the home. As Energy.gov explains, they convert the panelsâ direct current electricity â with a single voltage in one direction â into the alternating current used in homes where the voltage moves between positive and negative.

âI think the people hate me at Tesla.â

Nochta had âa couple of friends that do roofsâ and they estimated it would cost $8,000 to $10,000 to replace the roof. Including new solar panels would cost another $10,000 to $15,000.

Tesla Solar Roof Cost Versus Solar Panels Full Cost Breakdown: Not Cheap

At the moment, the Tesla Solar Roof is being installed in various locations across the United States.

At the October 2019 unveiling, Teslaâs senior director of energy operations Kunal Girota explained that Tesla is installing retrofit solar panels in 25 states, and it will be offering the roof in all of those states. The goal, however, is to expand across the country with both the companyâs internal teams and third parties.

At the time of writing, Teslaâs website accepts orders for its retrofit solar panels in 24 locations: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusets, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington.

The Tesla Solar Roof section of the website accepts orders for all 50 states bar Minnesota. Inverse has reached out to Tesla for more information.

As for international buyers, there may be some good news on that front. Musk stated on Twitter in February 2020 that he was âlooking forward to international expansion later this year.â

Tesla Solar Roof: How Much Did It Cost Before

Musk claimed that, in 80 percent of cases, the new tiles would offer a price point that is less than what the average roof costs plus solar panels.

Research from Electrek after the announcement found a 9.45-kilowatt roof of 1,862 square feet cost $38,266. Once the Powerwall and repairs were factored in, it cost $54,866.

LinkedIn engineer Robby Valles in August 2020 that his 1,737-square-foot 7.37-kilowatt solar roof cost $34,067 before tax credits.

For comparison, HomeGuide lists the cost to replace a 2,000-square-foot asphalt roof as $10,460 at the high end. EnergySage lists the average cost of a seven-kilowatt solar system as $19,670 before tax credits.

This suggests Valless roof may have cost slightly more than buying the two separately, although its hard to say as the price would vary depending on the house.

Tony Cho, who ordered a giant Tesla Solar Roof for his Florida retreat, told Inverse in January 2021 that it cost around 35 percent more than the price of panels and a new roof. Jason Lassen, who bought a Solar Roof for his Wisconsin home, told Inversein March 2021 the price was almost the exact same as the cost of a good shingle roof plus solar.

Breaking Down The Price Of Teslas Solar Roof

Tesla Solar Roof systems are designed entirely with Tesla-exclusive equipment. The total cost of a Solar Roof installation consists of three main components:

  • Active solar shingles

Heres the breakdown of how each one of these contributes to the final price:

1. Active solar shingles

Cost: $1.80 per watt

Teslas active solar shingles are tempered glass shingles that contain solar cells and generate electricity.

It costs about $1.80 per watt to install the active Solar Roof tiles. If you installed a 7 kilowatt Tesla Solar Roof, the active shingles alone would cost $12,600 before any incentives are considered. The bigger the solar system you need, the higher the total price will be.

Regular solar panels cost around $3.00 per watt on average, so the solar portion of the Tesla roof is technically cheaper than solar panels.

Each active shingle is 15 by 45, and designed to have a similar look to slate shingles. According to Electrek, Teslas solar shingles are 71.67 watts in size, meaning youd need about five shingles to produce the same amount of power as one 370-watt solar panel. However, Tesla doesnt list any official power ratings or performance specs on their website.

2. Inactive shingles / non-Solar Roofing materials

Cost: About $20 per square foot of total roof space

3. Roof tear off

Cost: About $3.58 per square foot

Cost Reduction In Teslas Solar Roof V3

Running the Numbers for Tesla

Based on a 2,000 square-foot roof, the price of the Tesla Solar Roof V3 starts at $34,000, roughly £30,000 based on todays exchange rate. This includes installation and Powerwall, making it 36% cheaper with the new solar tiles. Whilst it is still an expensive product, it does compete with other new premium roofs.

While it may set you back quite a bit initially? These Solar Roofs clearly pay for themselves in the long run. Is it time to consider investing?

Solar Roof Durability Vs Solar Panel Durability

Tesla is extremely confident in the durability of its solar roof. Elon Musk has stated that the Tesla Solar Roof has an infinity warranty or for the lifetime of your home, whichever comes first. While the durability of the new solar tiles has not been successfully field testing, there are videos online of the Tesla Solar team launching hail and other heavy objects at the solar tiles to show their durability. Based on a video recorded in a Tesla owned factory, it seems the solar tiles are stronger than a tempered-glass solar panel.

Standard solar panels, however, are usually warrantied by the manufacturer for 25 years and the panels typically will last longer than the warranty. The expected lifetime of solar panels has also been field tested, unlike the solar roof.

The biggest question here is what is going to happen when solar tiles start degrading and losing their efficiency? When solar panels need to be replaced or corrected it is a pretty simple replacement. But what happens when there are solar tile problems? How much of the roof is going to have to be replaced? It seems that making any corrections to a Tesla Solar Roof is going to be very expensive and labor-intensive.

Tesla Solar Roof: What Does Elon Musk Say About The Price Increase

Musk further explained the companys rationale during the first-quarter 2021 earnings call:

First of all, I should say the demand for the solar roof remains strong. So despite raising the price, the demand is still significantly in excess of our ability to meet the demand to install the solar roofs. So production is going fine, but we are choked at the installation point.

We did find that we basically made some significant mistakes in assessing the difficulty of certain roofs, but the complexity of roofs varies dramatically. Some roofs are literally two or three times easier than other roofs. So you just can’t have a one size fits all situation. If a roof has letter protuberances or if the core structure of the roof is rotted out or is not strong enough to hold the solar roof, then the cost can be double, sometimes three times what our initial quotes were.

So in those cases, what we obviously offer to do is to refund customers their deposit. What we cannot do is go and just lose a massive amount of money. We just got to provide a refund of the deposit.
