How Does A Solar Water Heater Work

A solar water heater works by absorbing light. Ultimately, the light is absorbed by means of a collector placed on the roof and ultimately converts the sunlight into heat.

This heat is then transferred to the water tank by means of a circulating pump. Then the exchange is triggered by the regulator but only when the collector is hotter than the water in the tank.

This prevents the circulating pump from using electricity unnecessarily. It also prevents overheating. At midday, in summer, when skies are cloudless is when the efficiency of the collective is at its highest.

Alternatively, they also do well when the collectors face south. When there is not enough sunlight, the water is preheated, and a backup system kicks in to bring the water to the required temperature.

How to Convert an Old Electric Water Heater

If you have an old electric water heater, you can remove the outer shell and insulation, as well as the pipe fittings. While you have the tank stripped down, it’s a good idea to flush the inside of the tank to ensure all the sediment has been removed.

Next, paint the tank flat black. This will increase the heat absorption.

Replace the pipe fittings, temperature/pressure relief valve, and the drain. Then seal the joints and connections with silicone, and connect the heater to your solar panel.

Your homemade solar water heater will heat the water as it flows through the panel, and then collect and store the water. The sun will keep the water warm while it’s stored in the tank until you need hot water.

Passive Solar Hot Water System

This type of system uses gravity and natural convection to move the water and is known as a thermosiphon system.

As the water heats up, it naturally rises. This rising effect allows the water to move in an upwards direction. In theory, you can heat water in coils and the heated water will move into the water heater or collector.

The issue with the thermosiphon design is that the coils have to be at least one foot below the holding tank. The more height, the better the flow. This means your coils have to be below your water heater by a minimum of one foot.

Most water heaters are placed on the ground in a garage or basement. You would have to put your water heater or collecting tank on a riser for the thermosiphon effect to work.

Convection, anyone?

You also have to account for bends and lengths in plumbing, as these factors affect the flow..

Mounting your coils or collector on a rooftop will not work as a passive solar hot water system.

However, there are solar collector designs with batch tank integration and could be mounted on the rooftop. Do note that the weight of these systems are really heavy, so mount accordingly! You dont want your solar collector falling through your roof.

This is a Solar hot water Batch Type pre-heater that pre-heats the water for my hot water tank inside the house. Cost $45.00 to build. I made it out of garage sale and Goodwill items and scrap wood I had laying around. It has been heating water up to 140 degrees and circulates thru the tank by natural flow no pump needed as it is lower than the main tank.
