The next total eclipse in the US will be on April 8, 2024. It will be visible in a path from Texas to Maine.
Eclipse America 2024 is set to be launched. We will be publishing our new calendar for April 8, 2024, on Monday, April 8th. Almost everyone in North America is expected to be able to see a partial solar eclipse because the weather is favorable. During a total solar eclipse, the Moon briefly blocks the Suns bright face, revealing the shimmering corona of our star. The totality will extend from the Canadian border to Mexico. The weather is typically favorable for an eclipse viewing experience. The corona can be seen for up to four minutes and 28 seconds. Even through binoculars or a telescope, looking directly at the Sun is completely safe.
Path Of Total Eclipse Through The Us And Parts Of Canada
The moon will be relatively closer to the Earth during the 2024 eclipse. The closer proximity will allow the eclipse to be larger and last longer in duration.
While the 2024 total solar eclipse in Ohio will last no more than five minutes, a partial solar eclipse will be visible before and after the total eclipse. Eclipse viewers who are outside the outer limits of totality will only be able to see a partial eclipse. The 2024 total solar eclipse will be a great experience for all!

Solar And Lunar Eclipses
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting the Moon’s shadow on Earth. A solar eclipse can only happen during a New Moon. The Moon’s orbit is titled 5 degrees to Earth’s orbit around the Sun. Therefore a solar eclipse is a relatively rare phenomena and a Total or Annular eclipse even more rare, with the Hybrid eclipse the rarest of all.
To understand the difference between a Total and Annular eclipse of the Sun, it must be understood that the Moon has an elliptical orbit around Earth. In fact, the Moon’s distance from Earth varies from a minimum of 221,000 to a maximum of 252,000 miles. Therefore the Moon’s apparent size in our sky will vary by 13%. When the Moon’s orbit is toward its minimum distance from Earth, the Moon will appear visually as a larger disk than the Sun. If an eclipse occurs during this time, it will be a Total solar eclipse because the Moon has totally obscured the Sun’s disk, producing the beautiful solar corona ejecting outward from the Sun. One important element to remember though is that the Moon’s shadow will obviously become narrower as it is cast from the Moon to Earth . Therefore the path of totality on Earth is narrow. It is also very short-lived as the Moon is moving quickly away from its perfect location of being situated between the Sun and Earth.
The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Chihuahua
A very tiny portion of the state of Chihuahua sees totality. Almost totally contained with the small De Palomas lakes region, this piece of the state sticks far enough into the path that a determined person could hike the 8 miles or so east from the lakes, and get a respectable 3 full minutes of totality! Do not attempt this unless you are experienced, know what you are doing, and are able to fully accept the physical risks that hiking in this forbidding desert area might bring. The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Durango
The shadow comes to Durango at 12:08:30MDT, in a heavily forested area along the Baluarte River. The states capital city lies just off the centerline, and gets 3m 50s of totality just after 12:12MDT. The town of Nazas lies almost exactly on centerline, and is the nearest place to the point of greatest eclipse! This means that folks there will see 4m 28s of totality the longest possible for this eclipse just before 12:15MDT.
Totality misses the state of Zacatecas by only about 6 miles. The towns of Hidalgo and Ejido Zaragoza get a 99.5% partial eclipse, and Colonia Emilio Carranza does a tenth of a percentage point better but no locations within Zacatecas will see totality itself.
What Is A Lunar Eclipse
An eclipse of the Moon occurs when the Earth lies directly between the Sun and the Moon and the Moon lies in the shadow of the Earth. During a total eclipse, the Moon does not disappear entirely but turns a deep, dark red. The Moon is illuminated by light that has passed through the Earth’s atmosphere and has been bent back towards the Moon by refraction.

Safely Viewing The Eclipse
Solar eclipses can be viewed safely. The rules are simple keep on eclipse glasses while the Sun is not yet fully eclipsed. Once the sky suddenly turns dark, and the solar corona appears, then you can take off your eclipse glasses to look at the Suns amazing corona.

The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Pennsylvania
By now, totality is being enjoyed by folks both north and south of the international border! The eclipse path straddles the entire border all the way from SW Ontario up through New Brunswick! We’ll talk more about that once we describe the path through Ontario.
Meanwhile, The eclipse path through Pennsylvania cuts a reasonably large part out of the northwestern portion of the state. Entering the state at 15:15:35EDT on state road 305 just west of Akerly , the shadow misses Hermitage, Franklin and Bradford. However, Meadville , Erie , Edinboro , Wattsburg , Waterford , North East , Corry , Youngsville and Union City get tickets to the show! Warren is just barely inside the path, and sees less than a minute of totality if youre there, youll want to move north or west on US62 to get farther into the path.
Folks in Pittsburgh need to head north on I-79, up as far as Meadville or so. And Phildelphia only gets an 88% partial eclipse. Head north, and get into the path! And that goes for anyone in most of Pennsylvania: Harrisburg, Lancaster, State College, Altoona, Allentown, Williamsport your closest path to the path is north, into New York!
The shadow leaves Pennsylvania at 15:20:29EDT, at the state line on the shores of Lake Erie along Lake Road, just west of the Shortman Rd exit off I-90. Having visited the Commonwealth for just under five minutes, totality is on to its next state New York!

The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through New York
There is some major excitement going on as the shadow enters New York. Niagara Falls, Buffalo and Rochester are all in totality at that point! Oh, and dont forget that the shadow is also making its way across southern Ontario by this time. We have a lot to talk about, so lets first take the path through New York a little slower, and see how we got to this point.
Totality first touches New York state at 15:16:47EDT, at the state line on US20 just west of Ripley . The shadow skates up the coast, engulfing Lake Erie along its entire length before hitting Niagara Falls and Buffalo almost simultaneously. The Falls itself sees 3m30s of totality at 15:18:12EDT, while the lakefront of Buffalo enjoys 3m45s just 2 seconds later. Why the big difference in duration? Buffalo lies almost exactly on the centerline, while the Falls are somewhat north of it! If you want to be right on that centerline, then you need to be just a bit south of downtown Buffalo, perhaps at the Tifft Nature Preserve there, youll get another half-second or so of totality!
Moving on toward the East, the shadow hits Rochester and Syracuse next. Everywhere on the Lake Ontario coastline is in the path as well!
Utica is not in the path.
The shadow leaves New York at 15:29:20EDT, on a little peninsula that forms the eastern boundary of King Bay, just east of Coopersville. Totality lasts less than 13 minutes in the Empire State!
The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Vermont
Passing from west to east over a tall, thin state doesnt give much time for totality, and in fact the entire eclipse visits Vermont for less than six minutes all told. It hits land first at 15:25:45EDT, on South Hero Island in Lake Champlain . Burlington gets 3m14s of totality at 15:26EDT, and Montpelier gets 1m30s at 15:27:35EDT.
The shadow leaves the state at 15:31:21EDT, east of Stewartstown NH, at the point where Beecher Falls Road and the river leave the state up in its far, far northeastern corner.

Highlights Along The 2024 Path Of Totality
A Great North American Solar Eclipse
Anticipation for the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse will be sky high! Not only are there 32 million people already living within the USA section of the path, but metropolitan areas such as St Louis, Cincinnati, Detroit, Toronto, and Quebec are very close to the path. The major cities of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., are all within 200 miles of the path of totality. So be prepared for the single-biggest mass travel event in the USA.
Landfall at Mexico
The first touchdown of the Moons shadow on land is Isla Socorro, 600 km from the Mexican mainland. The total solar eclipse first touches the mainland near Mazatlan, Mexico. Totality here is up to 4 minutes, 20 seconds along the center line. Other large Mexican cities in the path are Torreon and Durango.
Texas cities
South central states
After Texas, the Moons shadow crosses Hot Springs and Little Rock, Arkansas. The path comes close to St. Louis, so there will be a massive amount of traffic south to the path. Carbondale, Illinois enjoys its second total solar eclipse just 7 years after the August 21, 2017 eclipse.
The Midwest
Key cities in the path of total eclipse are Indianapolis, Dayton, Toledo, Cleveland, and Akron. The metropolitan areas close to the path include St Louis, Cincinnati, Detroit, and Pittsburgh. There will be a mass migration into the path on the early morning of April 8, 2024.

Is It Worth Risking Your Vision To See A Solar Eclipse
When viewing a partial eclipse, you are not at risk of eye damage because you are looking directly at the sun. To view an annular eclipse is to experience a partial eclipse, which is a beautiful sight as well. Furthermore, watching a total lunar eclipse is both beautiful and easy. While the eclipse will be visible in the majority of North America, it will only be visible in a location in the narrow path of totality.

The path of totality first touches Mexico at Mazatlan. It then enters the United States at Texas, cuts a diagonal all the way across the country to Maine, and visits the maritime provinces of Canada.
The major cities inside the path are Mazatlan, Torreon, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Montreal.
The ovals in the map show the shadow of the Moon at five minute intervals. This path is called the path of totality.

The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Maine
Pelee Island is the first Canadian soil to see totality, enjoying 3m15s at 19:12:44. The shadow hits the mainland at Point Pelee Dr in the National Park south of Leamington, at 15:13:15EDT.
From there, the shadow follows Lake Erie perfectly, moving up Hwy 401, just missing London. And actually, the big cities of Chatham-Kent, Kitchener, Woodstock and Toronto itself also lie outside the path you really need to be down on the coast! But Hamilton is barely inside the northern limit, and weve already mentioned Niagara Falls prime location. In Hamilton, youll want to be as far southeast as you can be, to maximize your time in the shadow.
It is bad news for the really big city Toronto is tantalizingly close to totality but you have to go out into the lake, or around it to the west or south sides of it, to see totality.
The eclipse path then passes just south of Oshawa, and picks up along the Lake Ontario coastline again just west of Cobourg .
Belleville and Kingston are good for totality, but Ottawa unfortunately lies north of the path. Cornwall is also squarely in the path.
After its nice run up the coast of both lakes, the shadow leaves Ontario at 15:27:26EDT on the St. Lawrence coast, on road 2 just east of Lancaster .
When Will The Next Solar Eclipse Be Visible In North America
The next total solar eclipse in the U.S. is expected on April 8, 2024, and on October 14, 2023, an annular solar eclipse will also be visible.
“Predicting the occurrence of eclipses is an ancient science,” Kerss said. “About 2,000 years ago, the Greeks built a bronze computer called the Antikythera mechanism, which could predict events involving the sun and moon, including eclipses.
“Today, with our current knowledge of the orbital properties of both the Earth and the moon, we can calculate the precise circumstances of eclipses all over the globe, thousands of years into the future.”
The next total solar eclipse to occur globally is expected on April 20, 2023, but this will be visible only from south and east Asia, Australia, the South Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Antarctica.

Next Total Solar Eclipse
The next total solar eclipse will be on July 2, 2019. It will be visible in South America.
It is not too late for space enthusiasts to begin looking for a total solar eclipse at some point in their lives. As the Moon completely covers the Sun, the day becomes dark for a few minutes during a partial eclipse. Viewers must be located in the path of totality to see the eclipse. When it comes to watching a total solar eclipse, one must plan ahead of time. Make travel decisions ahead of time, and establish a plan for when the weather is likely to be bad. Un unfiltered telescopes, binoculars, cameras, and other optical devices can be dangerous to look at the sun. On April 20, 2023, East Timor and Indonesia will join Australia in the Asian region.
A hybrid eclipse occurs when the sun enters the Earths shadow on one or both sides of the path of the eclipse, but only on one side. On April 8, 2024, Mexico City, United States of America and Canada will host the 2024 Summer Olympics. We will be able to see the entire sky for up to four and a half minutes at a time. On July 22, 2028, a new date will be added to the calendar. During a total solar eclipse, the Indian Ocean crosses the Cocos Islands and Christmas Island before crossing into northern Australia for a maximum duration of 5 minutes and 9 seconds. It will then travel to eastern Australia, passing directly over Sydney in about three and a half minutes.
