How Did Our Solar System Form

Our sun is a giant, raging ball of fire powered by nuclear reactions, and it provides the energy that sustains life on Earth. The life-giving star is a yellow dwarf star made up of gas: about 91% hydrogen and 8.9% helium, according to NASA. Compared with other stars, the size of the sun is relatively small and it’s just one of hundreds of billions of stars in our home galaxy, the Milky Way.
How To Make A Solar System Model At Home For A School Project
Building a solar system model at home is a hands-on way for students to visualize the positions and size relationships of the planets. Just note that it’s not practical to build a correctly scaled model. According to Guy Ottewell of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, if you use an 8-inch ball to represent the sun, Earth would be the size of a peppercorn. And the dwarf planet Pluto? The size of a pinhead. Not to mention, the entire model would have a diameter of 1.58 miles. Here’s how to pull off this simple school project.
Things You’ll Need
- Felt markers
- Fishing line
Lay the cardboard box on its side so that the opening faces you. Paint the inside black or a very dark blue. Add a few stars and galaxies with white paint, or with glow-in-the-dark paint for more effect.
Sort the plastic foam balls into four sizes. The largest ball should be the sun. The next largest should be Jupiter and Saturn, followed by Uranus and Neptune, and then Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and Pluto.
Paint the balls with tempera paints in these colors:
- Yellow: Sun
- Brownish-yellow: Venus, Jupiter and Saturn
- Red: Mars
- Blue: Earth, Neptune and Uranus
- Black: Pluto
Cut four rings out of poster board. They should be large enough to make the planetary rings for Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Cut a fifth ring large enough to fit between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter this is the asteroid belt.

Simulating The Formation Of Our Terrestrial Planets
The authors explore terrestrial planet formation through the medium of N-body simulations. They start with a number of embryos and planetesimals in a simulated solar environment. The embryos and planetesimals represent the large and small rocky bodies that are left over after gas dissipation of a protoplanetary disk, which is a remnant of stellar formation. We believe that our rocky/terrestrial planets are born out of collisions of these objects. The authors allow their simulated rocks to collide and interact with each other for a series of timesteps that equate to 400 million years. By that time, all of the planets will have formed and a stable system should be established. The authors create different initial distributions of the embryos and planetesimals that are inspired by different planet formation models, for example the Grand Tack model, Empty Asteroid Belt, and pebble accretion. They explore the mass ratios of embryos to planetesimals i.e. which type of pre-solar body will carry the most mass. Is it mostly in the smaller pebble sided objects, or in the bolder sized objects?
Formation Of The Planets
The various planets are thought to have formed from the solar nebula, the disc-shaped cloud of gas and dust left over from the Sun’s formation. The currently accepted method by which the planets formed is accretion, in which the planets began as dust grains in orbit around the central protostar. Through direct contact and self-organization, these grains formed into clumps up to 200 m in diameter, which in turn collided to form larger bodies of ~10 km in size. These gradually increased through further collisions, growing at the rate of centimetres per year over the course of the next few million years.
The inner Solar System, the region of the Solar System inside 4 AU, was too warm for volatile molecules like water and methane to condense, so the planetesimals that formed there could only form from compounds with high melting points, such as metals and rocky silicates. These rocky bodies would become the terrestrial planets ” rel=”nofollow”> Mercury, Venus, Earth, and ). These compounds are quite rare in the Universe, comprising only 0.6% of the mass of the nebula, so the terrestrial planets could not grow very large. The terrestrial embryos grew to about 0.05 Earth masses and ceased accumulating matter about 100,000 years after the formation of the Sun subsequent collisions and mergers between these planet-sized bodies allowed terrestrial planets to grow to their present sizes .
