Introduction

Solar photovoltaic systems are renewable energy providers system. They are installed in both grid-connected and off-grid houses. In grid-connected systems, many install solar power to try and save on energy cost from the utility company.

It is advised that to get most of the solar energy and still want to install a less costly system, please select the appliances with the lowest power ratings.

And if possible unless you have the money to install a huge system, avoid some of the power guzzlers such as instant showers, house heaters, air conditioners etc.

Electrical appliances

In our case we will build up a system that will power a house with the following electrical appliances:

  • Television set
  • Radio
  • Light bulbs

Next step after noting all the appliances that will depend on your system power, you calculate in watt-hours the power consumption of each appliance on daily basis. This is done by estimating the number of hours each appliance is used. I.e. mostly a television set is used mostly in the evening and morning.

Lets say in the evening you use your television set from 4 pm to 12 pm and in the morning you use it from 6 am to 12 am. In total, you use your television for 8 hours in the evening and 6 hours in the morning which adds up to 14 hours daily.

To get the consumption in watt-hours you multiply the number of hours with the television power rating.

I.e. 14 x 80 watts = 1120 watt-hours.

Keeping Your Panels Clean

Cleaning solar panels is a very important part of maintaining the panels. There are two major types of cleaning, light cleaning and heavy cleaning.

Light Cleaning: Light cleaning is the most common type of solar panel maintenance. It is recommended that this type of maintenance be performed about once a month. This type of maintenance removes dirt, dust, and other objects that have settled onto the surface of the solar panels.

Heavy Cleaning: Heavy cleaning is a more intensive form of solar panel maintenance. It should only be done every 12-18 months because it removes all traces of dirt particles and may damage sensitive components on the panels if not done properly.

If you keep up with this maintenance schedule, using your solar panels effectively will be a cinch!

Which Solar Energy Equipment And Materials Do You Need

In a rapidly expanding renewable energy supplies market, you have many choices for every component you must integrate to make your DIY solar system work efficiently during its entire operational life. Heres a list of the major parts for most solar systems.

  • Batteries
  • After all the headwork and logistics are done, you move on to the legwork: installation of PV panels on racks or poles somewhere on your property, then connecting them to your home electric panel. Depending on whether you opt for grid-tie, off-grid, or a hybrid system, further electrical connections may be needed to get everything up and running.

    How Does It Do That

Cuprous oxide is a type of material called a semiconductor.A semiconductor is in between a conductor, where electricity canflow freely, and an insulator, where electrons are bound tightlyto their atoms and do not flow freely.

In a semiconductor, there is a gap, called a bandgap betweenthe electrons that are bound tightly to the atom, and the electronsthat are farther from the atom, which can move freely and conductelectricity.

Electrons cannot stay inside the bandgap. An electron cannot gainjust a little bit of energy and move away from the atom’s nucleusinto the bandgap. An electron must gain enough energy to movefarther away from the nucleus, outside of the bandgap.

Similarly, an electron outside the bandgap cannot lose a littlebit of energy and fall just a little bit closer to the nucleus. It must lose enough energy to fall past the bandgap into thearea where electrons are allowed.

When sunlight hits the electrons in the cuprous oxide, some of theelectrons gain enough energy from the sunlight to jump past the bandgapand become free to conduct electricity.

The free electrons move into the saltwater, then into the clean copper plate, into the wire, through the meter, and back to the cuprous oxide plate.

As the electrons move through the meter, they perform the work needed tomove the needle. When a shadow falls on the solar cell, fewer electronsmove through the meter, and the needle dips back down.

Making dye solar cells is a fun way to see how natural pigments can be used to capture solar energy and generate electricity. By using titanium oxide, carbon from graphite, and natural dye made from berry juice, youll be able to see on a very small scale how solar energy panels work. Keep in mind that commercial solar panels use silicon for the solar cells, so the ones you make in this experiment are not the same as commercial-grade cells. These homemade solar cells are just meant to demonstrate how a solar cell can convert solar energy into electricity. You can do this experiment in a classroom setting or even at home in your kitchen!

    Safety First

When making solar panels, always wear a mask and safety glasses during soldering to protect from the inhalation of fumes and from flicking solder.

Also when you build solar panels, always make sure, you wear gloves during the handling of solar cells so you don’t get oil on the cells and reduce their effectiveness.

Get The Materials From The Shop

In this experiment we need following items. If you have none, get them from the shops. A sheet of 1mm Copper Foil A sheet of Aluminized Mylar One Plexiglass One CD rom Scratch free You can use any optical grade available material like Lexan , Pyrex etc.. but they are expensive and not so easy to work with. Also take a small Plexiglass sheet.

    Calculate Your Energy Needs

Take a look at your energy bill if youre building the system for use in your home. Or, view a chart that gives the details on how much energy the given devices you use require to keep them running. This will help you determine the load you need for your system.

    • Ceiling fan: 10-50W
    • LED Light bulb : 10W
    • LCD Monitor: 100W
    • Coffee Machine 1000W
    • Fridge 1200W

If youre wondering how to build a 5000-watt solar generator, be sure to find the components capable of handling such a load.

Install The Racking For Your Solar Panels

How To Build A Solar Panel From Scratch â Those Solar Guys

When purchasing racking, choosing which option to buy depends on where your panels will go. For instance, will they be ground mounted, or on your RV? This will determine the type of racking you need to buy. Once you pick your racking, you need to map out where you will drill the holes to secure the racking to your structure.

Do: Buy Cells Instead Of A Panel If You Need A Custom Size Or Shape

Imagine your project is a T-shaped robot, and you absolutely need the solar panel to be T-shaped. The best option is to either make do with a square panel, or make a T-shaped panel yourself.

Example of oddly shaped solar cell configuration

Though this is an extreme example, the best reason to buy cells over a pre-built solar panel if the flexibility of the structure as a whole. Your cells can be arranged almost any way you want and can fit your projects requirements closer than a standard panel.

Dont: Buy Cells Instead Of A Panel Just To Save Money

While buying cells does give you more power per dollar, the increased effort and availability of other materials should be taken into consideration. This solar panel generates 100W max compared to 5W max each from these cells.

After purchasing enough cells, tabbing wire, solder flux, the backing materials, and the cover materials, you could save $10-$20 if you make your own. That extra $20 might not be worth it if you need to work a few hours more for them. Especially if the solar panel is not the largest part of your project.

How To Make Your Own Diy Solar Panels

Renewable energy sources like solar power are a good option to cut the soaring energy bills. Solar power helps in both cutting the utility bills and reducing your carbon footprint. Solar power is generated through solar panels, which form part of the photovoltaic system. A solar panel is nothing, but a connected package of photovoltaic cells. The prices of solar energy applications are becoming more and more affordable. DIY solar panels save more money to consumers than the pre built panels available in the market. All you need are some basic tools and right knowledge. Below are steps that will help you make your own DIY solar panels.

Select the Location and Gather the Necessary Tools

Procuring Solar Cells and Building a Container

Wiring and Attaching the Solar Cells

Final Construction and Testing of DIY Solar Panels

During the final construction of DIY solar panels, a hole should be drilled through the bottom of the container, so that the wires come out. The holes should be later filled using the caulk to keep out the moisture. The plexiglass should be screwed firmly to the container. Testing the solar panel before it is connected to the electric wiring of the house will prevent any trouble later. Testing is done by connecting the solar panel to the voltmeter. If the reading of voltmeter shows between 18 and 20 volts, expected output based on the number of solar cells in your solar panel, then your solar panel will work well.

  • 1Squeeze 1-2 drops of an iodide electrolyte solution onto the dyed glass slide. Gently place the dyed glass slide stained-side-up in front of you. Use a pipette to squeeze 1-2 drops of iodide electrolyte solution onto the dyed coating.XResearch source
  • If there is any excess solution near the edges of the slide, where there is no dyed coating, wipe it off with a clean tissue.
  • You can buy a bottle of iodide electrolyte solution online for about $30 USD or less.
  • 2Offset the carbon-coated slide, graphite-side-down, on top of the dyed slide. Carefully pick up your graphite-coated slide by the sides, without touching the carbon coating. Flip it over on top of the dyed slide and offset it so that the strip that you didnt cover with graphite is exposed on 1 side and there is a clear strip of the dyed slide exposed on the opposite side.XResearch source
  • These 2 conductive faces of the slides, sandwiched together face-to-face, form the inside of your solar cell.
  • 3Clip the slides together at the 2 non-exposed edges using binder clips. The exposed edge of each slide is where you test the solar cell, so dont put the clips here. Carefully clip the slides together at the 2 other sides where the plates are sandwiched together with no exposed edges.XResearch source
  • This is your completed solar cell. It will work until the electrolyte solution evaporates, at which point you can unclip the slides and add more solution or simply squeeze more solution onto 1 of the edges and let it seep in.

Connect The Solar Panel To The Circuit Board

Once you have passed the red and black wire through the lid, its time to repeat the same actions when we were connecting the battery wires.

Take the stripped red wire from the solar panel and carefully put it in the wire nut, then take the red striped wire from the circuit board next to where its written SOLAR and put them alongside the wires from the panel in the wire nut.

Twist the nut carefully clockwise until the wires are connected in an electrical bond.

Now do the same with the black wires.

Solar Panel System: How To Build A Cheap One

A cheap solar panel system will forever be the best solution to expensive electric bills. Solar cells are getting cheaper each year.

While you could pay up to $10,000 for an off-the-shelf installation and could cover the systems price in just over 10 years, its still better and more educational to make one yourself.

Lets face it: were still living the post-traumatic stress of what happened in 2008, and were still living uncertain times when every cent we take from the bank is thoroughly analyzed before we actually sign a contract. The lack of financial stability has caused astute savings among those who learned how to save what they have, including energy.

Were living in a war right now. The battle for energy efficiency has never been fought with more advanced weaponry, and the winners are all those who pay less for more month after month after month
