Up to seven eclipses of the Sun and Moon can take place in one year, though the last time that happened was 1982, and the fewest possible is four.
That latter, minimalist mix is whats in store for 2022, and no eclipses at all occur until the April 30th. Its an assortment skewed toward disappearing Moons: Therell be two total lunar eclipses both of which will be seen well from North America but the two solar eclipses will be just partials.

Its All About The Angle Of The Orbit
It turns out that the answer to both of those questions, above, is connected to the angle of the Moons orbit, which is inclined about 5° from the ecliptic, another name for the Earths orbit around the Sun. For eclipses to happen with every full or new Moon, the Moon and Earth would have to orbit at the exact same angle .
It takes the Moon a little less than a month to orbit the Earth. In that time, it crosses the ecliptic plane twice. Each of these crossings is called a node. If the Moon is new or full at the time it crosses, a perfect alignment of Sun, Moon, and Earth, called a syzygy , occurs, resulting in an eclipse.
This is also why solar and lunar eclipses tend to fall within about two weeks of one another. If the Moon approaches close enough to the ecliptic during a full Moon for a lunar eclipse to occur, it will once again approach the ecliptic about two weeks later, when its new, causing a solar eclipse, and vice versa.

What Is A Total Solar Eclipse
For a total solar eclipse to take place, the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. Weather permitting, people located in the center of the Moons shadow when it hits Earth will experience a total eclipse. The sky will become very dark for a few minutes, as if it were night. Normally, when looking at the Sun, you can only see the photosphere, the bright surface. However, extending about 5,000 km above the photosphere is the region of the solar atmosphere called the chromosphere. It is only seen during total solar eclipses, or with sophisticated telescopes, and its red and pinkish color gives the blackened Moon a thin halo of color against the greyish corona. People in the path of a total solar eclipse can also see the Suns corona, the outer atmosphere, which is otherwise usually obscured by the bright face of the Sun.
A total solar eclipse is the only type of solar eclipse where viewers can briefly remove their eclipse glasses, during the few moments when the Moon is completely blocking the Sun.
What Is The Difference Between A Solar Eclipse And A Partial Eclipse
According to NASAs website, A solar eclipse happens when the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth, fully or partially blocking the Suns light in some areas. During a partial eclipse, the Moon and Sun are not perfectly aligned, so the Moon does not completely cover the Sun. This gives the Sun a crescent shape, or makes it appear as if a bite has been taken out of the Sun, depending on how much of the Sun is covered by the Moon.
In this case, close to 64 percent of the Suns disk will be blotted out at most, according to NASA.
The next total solar eclipse to cross the North American continent will be on April 8, 2024.

What Is The Difference Between A Solar And A Lunar Eclipse
There are two types of eclipses: solar and lunar. Solar eclipses occur during the new moon phase when the sun and moon position at the exact same degree within the same zodiac sign. The moon passes between the sun and Earth in this configuration, temporarily obscuring the sun. If this occurs during daylight , the result is breathtaking: The moon’s silhouette completely obscures the sun for several moments.
On the other hand, Lunar eclipses correspond with the full moon phase. But, unlike a typical full moon that reflects the sun’s illumination, during a lunar eclipse, the moon emanates the Earth’s shadow . With Earth perfectly wedged between the sun and moon, the moon exudes a tawny-red tone this distinctive hue is why it is often referred to as a “Blood Moon.” Lunar and solar eclipses also signify different types of shifts in astrology we’ll get to that in a minute.
Whats The Difference Between The Umbra And Penumbra
In every eclipse that occurs, there are two shadows cast by the Moon, the inner, darker umbra, and the outer, lighter, penumbra.
Its easiest to think of the umbra as the shadow we see when the whole Sun is covered, while the penumbra is the shadow caused by a partial covering of the Sun.
As you might imagine, the penumbra has different darkness levels. The part of the penumbra closest to the umbra, where the Suns surface might be > 90% obscured, is much darker than at its far edge where the Sun is less than 10% covered.
If you stand inside the path of the umbra also known as the path of totality the Sun will be entirely blocked by the Moon and youll observe a total eclipse.
However, if you stand inside the penumbra during an eclipse, you will only observe it as a partial eclipse.
Of course, some solar eclipses are only partial. When this happens, there is no umbral shadow hitting the Earths surface.

The first solar eclipse of 2022 graced southern skies this weekend.
On Saturday, April 30, people in parts of southern South America, Antarctica and the Pacific and Southern Oceans witnessed a partial eclipse, according to NASA.
As explained by NASA, a solar eclipse happens when the moon moves between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth, fully or partially blocking the suns light in some areas.
During a partial eclipse, the moon and sun are not perfectly aligned, so the moon does not completely cover the sun.
Videos were captured from South American countries such as Argentina and Chile showing the partial eclipse, which appears as if a “bite” has been taken out of the sun.

Megan Thee Stallion Just Helped Me Pick My Halloween Nails
Just as new moons are linked to beginnings and full moons are tied to culminations, eclipses serve as celestial checkpoints. An eclipse is a high-octane lunation that helps illuminate our karmic path, but just as these cosmic events can be visually striking, eclipses can also be a bit dramatic. Astrologically speaking, they speed up time: They open new doors by slamming others shut, so we often find abrupt and sudden shifts occurring during eclipses. Though the changes can be jarring, they can help us by speeding up the inevitable.
So, if you’ve been dragging your feet, an eclipse will be sure to give you that extra push needed to take action. While the results can be shocking, remember that these lunations simply expedite the inevitable these events were going to happen eventually.
Remember that endings are hard, but everything is cyclical: A culmination always occurs on the edge of a beginning.
Solar eclipses, which will occur in 2022 on Saturday, April 30, and Tuesday, October 25, correspond with new beginnings and unexpected opportunities. However, since the sun is obscured by the moon (representing our emotional inner-world during this lunation, solar eclipse events often first begin internally before affecting our relationships with others. For many people, solar eclipses are when we realize we need more than what we’re currently receiving. They’re a time to send cosmic invitations to the universe and welcome abundance.
