The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Michigan

Before moving east, lets talk about Michigan. As in Tennessee, only a very tiny sliver of the far, far Southeastern portion of the state will be in the path and that will be right along the edge. Were not talking about Detroit, either its not even close. Ditto Monroe or Adrian theyre not in the path. Not even Temperance or Lambertville will see totality, either they both lie outside the path! We mean only a few square miles of the absolute tiniest, most southeastern slice of Michigan is in the path. I-75 is in the path, coming north out of Toledo but only as far as the exit at Erie Road! Theres just not many places in Michigan to see totality, but if youre set on doing it from here, the Lost Peninsula Marina will see over a minute. Anywhere east of state road 125 will be in the path, but keep in mind youre near the northern limit this means that edge effects will reduce the amount of actual totality you see. The Bedford Hills golf club is barely on the edge, and anywhere west of that is not going to see totality. Best of luck if youre viewing from Michigan but if you do get to see totality, tell us your story! There wont be many people who see 2024s totality from here, and wed like to hear how it went for you on eclipse day!

The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Pennsylvania

By now, totality is being enjoyed by folks both north and south of the international border! The eclipse path straddles the entire border all the way from SW Ontario up through New Brunswick! We’ll talk more about that once we describe the path through Ontario.

Meanwhile, The eclipse path through Pennsylvania cuts a reasonably large part out of the northwestern portion of the state. Entering the state at 15:15:35EDT on state road 305 just west of Akerly , the shadow misses Hermitage, Franklin and Bradford. However, Meadville , Erie , Edinboro , Wattsburg , Waterford , North East , Corry , Youngsville and Union City get tickets to the show! Warren is just barely inside the path, and sees less than a minute of totality if youre there, youll want to move north or west on US62 to get farther into the path.

Folks in Pittsburgh need to head north on I-79, up as far as Meadville or so. And Phildelphia only gets an 88% partial eclipse. Head north, and get into the path! And that goes for anyone in most of Pennsylvania: Harrisburg, Lancaster, State College, Altoona, Allentown, Williamsport your closest path to the path is north, into New York!

The shadow leaves Pennsylvania at 15:20:29EDT, at the state line on the shores of Lake Erie along Lake Road, just west of the Shortman Rd exit off I-90. Having visited the Commonwealth for just under five minutes, totality is on to its next state New York!

What Is A Solar Eclipse

Despite the sun being roughly 400 times larger than the moon, it’s also about 400 times further away from Earth. The moon’s orbit of Earth is tilted slightly from the path the sun takes through our sky, but it does intersect. Occasionally, a new moon gets exactly between Earth and the sun, and a solar eclipse occurs.

The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Missouri

The umbra first touches Missouri at 13:53:38CDT, just about at the point where state road 467 crosses the border with Arkansas. Doniphan lies on the centerline, and Cape Girardeau sees its second total eclipse in less than 7 years!

Speaking of locations that see both the 2017 and the 2024 eclipses, it is a very tough call to say exactly where the first piece of land is that can lay claim to being first to see both eclipses. Our bet is for the little town of Cherokee Pass, which lay on the southern edge of the 2017 path but now in 2024 gets a respectable 3m38s of totality at 13:57:27CDT. If you want to lay claim to being first to see both eclipses, we recommend you do your own calculations. But if you do end up choosing Cherokee Pass, it seems to us that youll want to be at least as far north on 67 as the set of restaurants and gas stations that lie south of road A. Wed like to note that, due to the shape of the umbral outline on the Earth, points west of the centerline here receive totality slightly earlier than points on the centerline. The western half of the Boot Heel lies in the path Kennett sees 2m17s of totality at 13:57CDT. New Madrid is also in the path but if you go there, please pronounce it the way the locals do!

Safely Viewing The Eclipse

Solar eclipses can be viewed safely. The rules are simple keep on eclipse glasses while the Sun is not yet fully eclipsed. Once the sky suddenly turns dark, and the solar corona appears, then you can take off your eclipse glasses to look at the Suns amazing corona.

The total solar eclipse of 2024 will begin its journey from Mexico and end in Canada. If you live in the solar eclipses path of totality it means that youll be lucky enough to view the entire eclipse. The path of the eclipse will be in Sinaloa in Mexico. The eclipse begins over the South Pacific Ocean at 15:42 UTC. Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico will be one of the first locations in continental North America to see totality.

The Moon’s penumbral shadow moves across the border into Texas and from Texas into Okhlahoma. It then quickly passes through Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, from where it once again crosses into Canada.

As you may know, a partial solar eclipse is taking place today on planet Earth. Sadly, it’s only possible to see it from Chile, where observers will see up to 54% of the Sun eclipsed by the moon just before sunset. Expect incredible photos!

North America is living through a golden age of solar eclipses. By now you will have probably heard about the next total solar eclipse coming to North America in 2024. Just a few weeks ago the two-year countdown began to what will be a jaw-dropping totality on April 8, 2024.

However, there are plenty of other solar eclipses coming to North America that have not been as well publicised.

In fact, in the remainder of this decade no fewer than six solar eclipses will be viewable from the U.S. and Canada!

The Next Total Solar Eclipse Visible In North America

The map above shows all the total solar eclipses taking place in North America during the 21st century. You can see that the next total eclipse for North America will occur on April 8, 2024.

This might make it seem as if total solar eclipses are somewhat rare, when, in fact, theyre not. They happen about every 18 months as seen from somewhere in the world. However, for any given spot on Earths surface, total solar eclipses dont happen very often, if even during a persons lifetime. The fact is, you might have to travel to see an eclipse.

The next total solar eclipse will cover three countries, including 11 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces . It will start in Mexico, travel across Texas, and then continue north-northeast, taking turns between the U.S. and Canada in the northeast before it exits the continent over Newfoundland. If the weather is benign, this promises to be an even better eclipse in terms of length of totality than the total eclipse of 2017, because the path of totality will be wider.

The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Arkansas

The shadow enters Arkansas at 13:45:35CDT, on the wooded shores of the Red River just south of where OK road 87 turns into AR road 108. Totality here lasts 4m5s, but we dont think there will be many intrepid eclipse chasers paddling down the river. You never know, though.

There are plenty of good-sized towns in Arkansas that you could choose for your eclipse experience: Hot Springs and Little Rock are possibilities, though if youre in the state capital youll want to be as far northwest as you can get Little Rock is very close to the southern limit! Conway may be a better choice, while Russellville will see 4m9s of totality at 13:50CDT. Clinton is almost right on centerline, while Jonesboro will get 2m29s at 13:55:30CDT.

Pine Bluff is south of the path! Head up to Little Rock, or even closer to the centerline at Conway. Fayetteville is north of the path, and even Fort Smith lies just tantalizingly outside of totality. Get over to Ozark, or even farther east on I-40, and enjoy a great show!

Arkansas bids farewell to totality at 7 seconds after straight-up 14:00CDT. Less than 15 minutes to sweep across the entire state from southwest to northeast! The community of St. Francis, on the border with Missouri, will see 3m24s of totality at 13:56:30CDT.

Where Is The 2024 Solar Eclipse Visible

On April 8, 2024, a solar eclipse will be visible from a narrow path that will take it through the Canadian Maritimes and the Northwest Territories. The yellow curves represent the amount of Sun covered by the Moon outside of the path of totality.

It is impossible not to be swept up in the excitement of the upcoming total solar eclipse, which will take place on April 8, 2024. Is the total solar eclipse visible from the U.S. and Mexico? If so, where? That question could be answered with a detailed map, such as the one below. Where are the best locations to view events? That answer is not as straightforward as the one above. The town of Piedras Negras, in the state of Coahuila, will have the longest duration of totality .

With a total surface area of nearly 8 square miles, Radar Base, Texas has the most potential for totality of any U.S. military base. If youre planning to see the longest totality of your life, make sure you arrive at least a day ahead of time. Austin, Texas is at the southern limit of the path of totality. Its easy to get to Hillsboro, which is located south of Dallas on Interstate 35. Sulphur Springs is a great place to live in the Lone Star State because its location allows you to watch the sun rise and set for only two seconds. It would be relaxing to observe from a boat. Cape Girardeau, Missouri, has the most people in the state who will experience totality.

The Next Total Solar Eclipse In The United States Is In 2024

Many people in the United States had never seen a total solar eclipse until they did during the 2017 event. The next total solar eclipse will take place on April 8, 2024, only seven years from now. The sun will appear in the sky for the duration of the eclipse from coast to coast, making it the most visible solar eclipse in the United States since 1979. A total solar eclipse will take place at the Moon’s ascending node on Monday, April 8, 2024, visible across North America and dubbed the Great North American Eclipse by some of the media. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s apparent diameter is larger than the Sun’s, blocking all direct sunlight, turning day into darkness. Totality occurs in a narrow path across Earth’s surface, with the partial solar eclipse visible over a surrounding region thousands of kilometres wide.

Occurring only one day after perigee , the Moon’s apparent diameter will be larger than usual. With a magnitude of 1.0566, its longest duration of totality will be of four minutes and 28.13 seconds near the town of Nazas, Durango, Mexico , and the nearby city of Torreón, Coahuila.

This eclipse will be the first total solar eclipse to be visible in Canada since , the first in Mexico since , and the first in the U.S. since . It will be the only total solar eclipse in the 21st century where totality will be visible in the three-state set of Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
