How Do Physical Size And Power Rating Relate
Though both are spoken in different numbers, the physical size does control the power rating. This depends totally on the power generating capacity of individual cells. PV cells come in the power ratings of 4 to 5 watts. A high efficiency cell with 5Wp rating used for a 72-cell panel will give us a 5*72 = 360Wp panel. The same cells for a smaller sized panel would mean a 5*60 = 300Wp panel.
In a remarkably short duration, the energy produced per cell has been steeply increased. Solar cells are becoming more and more efficient. Consequently, as time progresses, solar panels will continue to get smaller for the power they generate, and they will require less space on roofs or the ground.

A U.S solar panel system generates an average of 6 Kilowatts . This means if you install a 6kW system that is made of 20 average solar panels, you will have to keep a space 72 feet wide and 13 feet long .
Measurements use based on the assumption that you place your panels very close to one another without obstructions.

The nice thing about building your own solar panel is that you can make it to suite your needs. Solar cells are typically available in 0.5V and a range of power outputs. They can be arranged in series to get any output voltage you require in multiples of 0.5V. If you are looking to charge a 12V deep cycle battery for an off grid application then you need an 18V panel which will consist of 36 cells in series . You need 18V so that even when the panel is not in full sun it is able to charge the battery.
In order to reduce the number of cells you need, you could try splitting your solar cells to get a higher voltage out of each cell.
Choosing Cell Power Output
The second consideration is the power output you require. To calculate how many solar cells you need, divide the total power you need by the power of each cell. For example, if you need a 200W panel and you are using 4W cells then you need 200W / 4W = 50 cells. Standard solar panels come in two common configurations: 60-cell and 72-cell.
An individual solar cell is a 6 x 6 square. 60-cell panels are laid out in a 6×10 grid. 72-cell panels are laid out in a 6×12 grid, making them about a foot taller.

Take our example above, where youre getting an average of five hours of direct sunlight per day and using solar panels rated at 290 W.
