Nrels Solar Energy System Survives Hail Storm

On May 8, 2017, an intense hailstorm hit the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, although just one solar panel was damaged.

Shattering car windows and leaving dents the size of golf balls on the roofs of nearby homes and automobiles, the hailstorm left a path of destruction in its wake.

But the PV system at the NREL could ride out the storm with minor damage.

The scientists at NREL are not surprised by this development, as they have collaborated closely with their U.S.

The SunShot program of the U.S. Department of Energy aims to lengthen the lifespan of solar panels.

Hailstone impact testing is mandatory for the Initiatives modules. At speeds of around 70 mph, ice balls the size of ping-pong balls are shot at several PV modules.

During this hailstorm, multiple stones hit the glass module cover almost simultaneously, causing it to break. This focused force fractured the glass into tiny shards.

It looks like nearly three dozen hailstones impacted the roof, each leaving a footprint of impact in the web of more minor cracks.

To ensure that solar panels on the market can withstand the extreme weather conditions to which they are exposed, SunShot funds NREL researchers to participate in the International Photovoltaic Quality Assurance Task Force, which sets standardized industry quality testing.

These quality criteria bolster customers and financiers faith in PV.

What Is The Link Between Hail And Climate Change

While hail is projected to decrease in North America and Asia due to climate change, scientists claim it may increase in currently low-risk continents such as Europe and Australia.

Oklahoma Hail How Tough Are Solar Panels

The first question on many Oklahomans minds when considering solar panels for the home is, What happens to my solar panels during hail season?

At Solar Creations, we select solar panels that undergo rigorous testing to prove their ability to withstand whatever Oklahoma weather may come their way. In many cases, the panels will come through a hailstorm unscathed, even when the surrounding shingles are damaged to the point of needing replacement. Heres a great example from a Denver news outlet reporting on a storm that hit the NREL facility there with hail up to 2.75 inches in diameter, damaging many vehicles but only one of the more than 3,000 installed solar panels:

During the testing phase, manufacturers will typically fire ice pellets at the panels in several critical locations to ensure that the design meets their requirements. Here is a sample of some of the testing parameters and acceptance criteria different manufacturers use when hail testing panels:

· Ice pellets from 1 to 1-3/8 inches in diameter fired into panels at 52-62mph, which exceeds the projected terminal velocity of hail stones of that size

· Following ice pellet impact, the panels must meet these criteria:

o No evidence of major visual defects

o No more than 5% loss in maximum power output

o To ensure the continued safe operation of the panel, the insulation resistance must be the same as measured before the test

How Big A Risk Is Hail Damage For Solar Panel Owners

The greatest risk of severe hail is in the area known as hail alley – approximately Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming. These are states where severe hail is a risk on multiple days in a year. The US Storm Prediction Center has a map that summarizes the risk:

In this map, you can see that parts of Kansas experience more than a dozen severe hail days a year, on average, with Oklahoma and Nebraska a close second. Severe hail is a smaller risk but still possible throughout much of the eastern half the country, including Texas, which has a significant and growing solar industry.

If you live in one of these places, it might be worth taking measures to reduce your risk of financial losses due to hail-related solar panel damage.

The largest number of home solar panel owners in the US live in California, the Southwest, and parts of the Northeast. While hail is still possible there, its much less of a risk. Even so, it may be worth checking on your insurance policy, just in case. More about that later.

The surface of a solar panel is made up of solar cells. It’s the solar cells job to absorb sunlight to convert it into energy. Solar cells are only a few millimeters thick so they are quite susceptible to damage.

These solar cells are an important part of a solar panel system’s functionality, which is why they need to be protected.

This protection comes in the form of commercial-grade tempered glass which forms the outermost layer of the solar panels surface. While solar panel glass is much more sturdy than regular glass, it can still take damage.

Hail is one of the biggest potential causes of damage to solar panels along with twigs, leaves, dirt, and debris. Solar panel manufacturers are well aware of this fact, which is why rigorous testing is done to ensure the panels are as durable as possible.

The hail storm that hit Colorado in May of 2017 serves as a testament to the durability of solar panels. During this storm, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory was hit and out of their 3,000 plus solar panels, only 1 was damaged.

Along with hail, severe weather events could also end up with snow on your solar panel.

Itâs a good idea to take a look at the datasheet for the solar panels you intend to install on your home. While the specs can appear complicated, thereâs only a few key things to look out for. I wrote a post to help you deciper them.

One of these key things is the strength rating of the panel. There will be two ratings.

The frontside strength, also called the snow load rating, tells you how much force the front of the panel is designed to withstand.

The backside strength, also called the wind load rating, measures the strength of the rear of the panel.

Theyre labelled this way because the weight of snow will land on the front side of the panel, while ground-mounted arrays need to resist the force of wind hitting the panels from the rear.

Snow load is the relevant rating when it comes to hail. Itâs usually listed in Pascals , a unit of force. Higher numbers are better.

A solar panel with an IEC 61215:2005 rating will have a snow load rating of at least 5,400 Pa and a wind load rating of at least 2,400 Pa. Panels that satisfy the older IEC 61215 standard only need a snow rating of 2,400 Pa.

Solar panel datasheets all formatted a little differently, so youâll need to study it for a minute to find the rating. As an example, hereâs a portion of the datasheet for the SunPower X-Series:

What Happens When Hail Strikes Your Solar Panels

Your solar panels are built to withstand the outdoors. Theyre made to last over 20 years while being exposed to constant sunlight, heavy rains, and strong winds. But hail is an exceptional case. While solar panels can take light impacts, stronger impacts can cause damage. Your solar panels should be able to withstand hailstorms if the hailstones are small, and if the hailstorm is short-lived.

Larger hail will absolutely damage your panels, and the chance for serious damage increases with the length of the hailstorm and the size of the hail. Large hailstones are like rocks, and the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Strong impacts from large hail will shatter the glass and acrylic covering and damage the individual solar cells in the panel.

But all hope isnt lost. Hailstorms are a relatively rare phenomenon, and youre likely to go most of your life without ever experiencing one. Hail is most common in the interiors of continents and along the frontier of tall mountain ranges, far from populated areas. But there are a few regions in particular where hailstorms are common. In the US, hailstorms often occur in the Great Plains, and the area where Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska meet is known as Hail Alley. In Europe, hailstorms are most common in the center of the continent, mostly across parts of Germany, France, and Belgium.

Inspect Solar Panels After A Hail Storm

Inspect your solar panels after a heavy hail storm for damage. This is also a good time to remove any debris, small branches, or leaves that may have fallen on the surface during the storm. Check the surface for any small cracks, as well as the frame for any dents.

You dont have to inspect your solar energy system after every hail storm, especially for light to moderate events. If you notice that your system is generating less power or isnt working properly after being exposed to mild hail, then you should assess the panels on the rooftop and check for any cracks or inconsistencies on the surface. For extreme hail, its a good idea to check the solar panels after the storm has passed.

Although very tempting, avoid opening the panel or applying adhesives to the surface. These actions could void your warranty and make filing claims difficult. In these cases, simply leave the solar panel in its current condition and wait for a solution from your insurance company or warranty provider. They will likely either replace or repair the broken panel.

How Do You Protect Solar Panels From Hail

Because hailstone damage to solar panels isnt typical, you shouldnt consider protecting your solar panels as a high priority during thunderstorms. However, if you want to know for your edification, there are ways to safely protect your solar panels from hailstorms.

Install the solar panels on rotating mounts.

If your solar panels can rotate, you will be able to move the surface out of harms way.

Install protective covers over the panels, which can be lowered during storms.

These protective covers arent intended to be installed once and never removed. These covers may degrade the generation efficiency of the panels and should only be used during weather events. When a storm does occur, you can lower the covers over the panels to give them an extra layer of protection beyond the installed glass.

Paint a layer of methyl methacrylate over the glass surface.
