Tesla Solar Roofs Vs Solar Panels – Case Study #1

To help customers estimate the cost of installing solar panels, Tesla provides them with a cost calculator based on their location and average monthly electric bill. To help you get an idea of how much a Tesla solar system costs, we received a quote for a single-family home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with an average monthly electric bill of $170.

Tesla allows customers to own their system through a cash purchase or loan in select states.

  • Solar loanSolar loans work similarly to a home or auto loan, with customers paying a monthly fee to own their panels and benefit from solar incentives.
  • PurchaseYou may also purchase a Tesla solar system outright if you have the funds available.

Tesla Solar Roof: How It All Came Together

In January 2021, Nochta switched on his new roof. His 1,175-square-foot roof has enough solar-harvesting tiles to generate 7.6 kilowatts of power. The Tesla Solar Roof uses a mix of solar tiles and dummy tiles the latter used at the edge of the installation to enable teams to more easily cut edge tiles down to size and fit the roof seamlessly to the house.

Nochta first installed solar panels on his house in 2016, supplied by SolarCity. SolarCity merged with Tesla later that year.

The first installation was less than three kilowatts not much energy, which meant the couple was using slightly more than they produced. But as the household grew to add children and parents, Nochta discovered it was surprisingly difficult to expand the existing solar panel system to add more capacity. The new panels would have to work as part of a dual system, with two inverters feeding into the house.

These inverters are vital for getting solar power into the home. As Energy.gov explains, they convert the panels direct current electricity with a single voltage in one direction into the alternating current used in homes where the voltage moves between positive and negative.

I think the people hate me at Tesla.

Nochta had a couple of friends that do roofs and they estimated it would cost $8,000 to $10,000 to replace the roof. Including new solar panels would cost another $10,000 to $15,000.

At that point, its just, dont do it, just get a Solar Roof done, Nochta says.

Is Tesla Solar Better Than Regular Solar

Tesla Solar Roof Vs. Apollo and Dow Solar Shingles in 2017

The Tesla Solar Roof covers more surface area than traditional solar panels. One reason for this is because your entire roof is fitted with photovoltaic tiles and hardware so that the largest surface area possible is able to absorb sunlight and provide your home with solar energy. Traditional solar panels are limited in their shape and placement, and you may not be able to have as much surface area covered by solar panels as you would if your whole roof were covered with the Tesla Solar Roof. Most homeowners think that Tesla Solar Roof tiles are much more aesthetically pleasing than regular solar panels. However, there is the question of energy efficiency. Solar panels are still 20-30% more efficient than Teslas solar tiles.

As for whether Tesla solar panels or regular solar panels are better is simply a matter of personal preference. After purchasing the failing solar company SolarCity from his cousins in 2016, Elon Musk changed the name to Tesla Solar, and its panels are comparable to any other solar companys panels, although they are more durable and cheaper in some areas than competitors options.

Solarskin Vs Tesla Solar Roof

When it comes to innovations, many exciting things have been introduced to the solar industry in the last decade. One of the most prominent examples of this is Tesla, which has garnered much attention for the pursuits of its CEO Elon Musk, the development of its electric car models, and more recently the deployment of its solar powered roof. First installed in 2018, the Tesla roof has changed the way solar shingles are seen in the industry, having successfully created solar powered shingles that appear the same as non-active roof tiles.

The hope Tesla brings to the solar industry is aesthetics, but for homeowners looking to balance price, design, and a seamless installation, it is important to consider all aesthetic technologies out there. Sistine Solars SolarSkin is an easy-to-implement option that fits the current infrastructure of the solar industry, being compatible with all brands and solar panel types, whether monocrystalline, polycrystalline, or any others.

SolarSkin is an aesthetic overlay to any conventional solar powered system. Its ability to transform panels to match any design, color, or surface makes it an asset to the aesthetically-minded homeowner. Here are five ways in which SolarSkin compares to the Tesla roof.

Are Solar Roof Tiles For You

The Tesla Solar Roof is an option for homeowners who are concerned about the aesthetics of their rooftop because the tiles look like a traditional rooftop. The tiles do come with a high price tag, though, and will make a Tesla Solar Roof cost prohibitive for many homeowners. Solar panels are still a reliable, tested, and durable option for homeowners who are looking for a great return on investment.

Tesla Solar Roof Cost Vs Solar Panels Cost

Teslas solar panels are premium products, in line with other top-tier manufacturers like LG and Sunpower. Their panels command higher prices than standard-quality offerings, but they are also more efficient and have much better warranties.

If youre in the market for a premium solar panel, the Tesla solar panel is a great option. Its backed up with Panasonics incredible technology and likely has a good, long-term warranty.

The panels themselves will likely be 1.5x to 2x more expensive than standard-quality panels, but the rest of the installation costs like installation and other equipment should remain fairly similar to any other traditional solar installation.

And installing Teslas traditional solar panels is certainly cheaper than their solar tiles, which are hard to justify in any situation. If youre needing a new roof anyway or are building a new home, Teslas solar shingles make much more sense, but itll still be cheaper to simply install normal asphalt shingles and a traditional solar installation.

Beyond the aesthetics, the next selling point for Teslas solar shingles is the simplicity of the system. You dont need to buy a new roof and solar panels, theyre integrated into each other. As such, if we want to compare costs, we cant just compare the cost of Teslas solar shingles to installing solar only, but the cost of installing a new roof as well.

  • Tesla Solar Roof Cost: $38,220
  • Solar Panels + Asphalt Shingles Cost: $23,020

Solar System Size Difference For Cost Comparison

EYE-OPENING: Tesla Solar Roof Cost VS Solar Panels

Tesla Solar Roof system size was 6.607 kW. The solar panel installer system size was 11.385 kW.

On a cost-per-wattage basis, Tesla was quoting $2 per watt compared to $3 per watt for the solar panel installer.

As with the local roofers, the solar panel installer did not provide a line item quote. They provided one price for the installation. Materials, labor, and taxes were not included.

For an accurate comparison, I normalized the quotes to be on the same solar system size basis of 6.607 kW.

When I reduce the size of the solar panel installers system to 6.607 kW at $3 per watt, the total cost comes out to be $19,578.

When I add in the lowest bid from the roofing company, the total for a new asphalt composition roof with solar panels is $32,298.

Therefore, before applying for the federal tax credit and promotions from Tesla the cost comparison between a Tesla Solar Roof is $52,164 versus $32,298 for composition roof and solar panels.

A difference of $19,865 for a Tesla Solar Roof versus solar panels and a roof. But that doesnt include the federal tax credit or promotions I received from Tesla.

What Is The Tesla Solar Roof

According to Tesla, the Tesla Solar Roof System is a fully integrated solar and energy storage system for your home. This means that the system is not a structure or machinery that is simply tacked onto your home or placed in the backyard. It is part of your home, and it has energy inverters so that your home is always supplied with the right amount of energy. It can also store energy it absorbs from the sun in whats called a Powerwall that you can bundle with the Solar Roof System.

The Powerwall ensures that you always have power, like a backup generator and battery combined. Even if its cloudy or storming, nighttime, or theres a power outage, the Powerwall makes sure your home has uninterrupted power supplied to your home.

This system is an entirely new roof. Not only does Tesla install the components of its solar roof system these are actual tiles and shingles, so your entire roof is effectively being replaced. If you dont need a roof replacement any time soon, its advisable that you wait to replace your existing roof with the Tesla system until you do need a new roof.

Is The Tesla Solar Roof Worth It

Were going to cut to the chase – for most homeowners, the Tesla Solar Roof isnt a worthwhile investment. Installing traditional solar panels is going to be cheaper, no matter how you slice it. Even if you also need a new roof, Teslas roofing material and removal costs are so high that unless you were already planning on getting a premium roof installed, its going to be more expensive than it needs to be.

Even in scenarios where the price of a Solar Roof is competitive, were not so sure its the right way to go solar. For one thing, Tesla is notorious for having subpar customer service when it comes to its energy division. You can see for yourself in Teslas customer reviews here on SolarReviews. People have reported waiting weeks to hear back from their Tesla advisors if there is an issue with their system.

Tesla is also extremely unreliable. Despite being introduced in 2016, Tesla didnt start installing Solar Roofs until 2018, and its still unknown how many have actually been installed. Then in mid-2020, Tesla started canceling Solar Roof preorders after homeowners had paid their deposits – claiming the sites werent within their service territory. And not long after, Tesla changed the prices of Solar Roof installations for homeowners who already signed contracts. If you cant even trust that theyll honor their contract – what can you trust them about?

Exploring Tesla Solar Roof Vs Solar Panels

When Tesla released their Solar Roof it really piqued consumer interest in solar tiles. And it caught a lot of people by surprise when Tesla recently increased the Solar Roofs cost by a pretty big margin. But theyre not playing this game alone. Lets explore how Tesla solar products stack up against the competition and whats a better value: solar panels or solar tiles?

When Tesla releases a new product, it instantly goes viral, and the Solar Roof was no exception. Since then this technology has spurred a lot of interest around the world. But Tesla wasnt the first company entering this market, although it was the biggest. A few companies had already introduced solar tiles to the market, while others have been spurred on by Tesla to develop similar products.

In a previous video, I covered a lot of the details of Teslas Solar Roof and interviewed an installer with experience with the product. Ill include a link in the description if youre interested. And just recently Tesla changed Solar Roofs pricing somewhat dramatically. 1 Before we unpack that price, lets jump into the technology and check out the differences, advantages, and downsides compared to solar panels.

When looking beyond aesthetics, one area that panels have an edge over tiles is positioning. Solar tiles cant be turned and tilted to catch maximum sunlight, so their installation angle cant be optimized.

Will Teslas Solar Panel Roof Be the Next Solar Shingles?

Is it worth pre-ordering a $60,000-strong untested technology? The answer could swing either way. If you have been determining costs and output efficiency with a Tesla calculator, its a big YES. If you are a safe runner or a test-before-commit type, it could be MAYBE! or a flat NO. Given Teslas previous claims regarding future cars, rockets, or sometimes the dogecoins, Elon Musk would surely lift it up to Mars, believe it.

Is it worth it for an average American household? Maybe not. The introductory price is way too expensive, possibly unaffordable for pretty much anyone, unless you own a mansion with a good business, at least. Compared to that, solar panels are for everyone. Buy them readily, install them on a rooftop and get going. They are cheaper, though not as handsome as a Tesla solar tile, and are time-tested, though fragile and less efficient sometimes.

How Do Teslas Solar Tiles Stack Up To Traditional Solar Panels

Teslas solar tiles are unique in the solar industry, because youd never even know theyre up there. Traditional solar panels, as youve probably noticed, are pretty easy to spot. Lets compare Teslas solar shingles to traditional solar panels in three categories:

  • Aesthetics: Tesla has all other solar manufacturers, even other solar tile manufacturers, beat here.
  • Cost: Tesla solar tiles are much more expensive than installing traditional solar panels.
  • Efficiency: Teslas partnership with Panasonic gives them access to some of the most efficient solar cells on the market today.

Lets take a look at each of these categories a bit more in depth.

Aesthetics: Tesla Wins Hands-Down

This is the biggest selling point for Teslas solar shingles. They just look so good. Lets admit it, renewable energy is beautiful, but those solar panels bolted on your neighbors roof arent. Sure, they complement certain home styles quite well, but most of us dont live in the bold, ultra-modern homes that solar companies use in their advertisements.

Teslas solar shingles, on the other hand, are so well-designed you wouldnt even know the roof youre staring at is pumping out electricity. Of course, if you want your neighbors to now youre so green-minded, then you might have a problem.

Overall, nothing comes close to Teslas solar tiles.

Tesla Solar Roof Vs Solar Panels: The Great Debate

When Tesla Solar Roof was launched in 2016 after the acquisition of SolarCity by Tesla, it was supposed to take the solar industry by storm.

To its credit, Tesla Solar Roof did create a few ripples and that is definitely something but not the kind of coup expected. Industry experts point to various reasons for this turnabout.

Fast-forwarding to 2022, it has still not managed to catch the imagination of the solar buyers across the board. Its price is one of the major deterrents for an average household. There is much apprehension and ambiguity about Tesla Solar Roof, most of it created by Tesla itself.

The complicated pricing model and proven unreliability of Tesla in honoring the contracts are driving away potential buyers. And also the fact that its customer service has earned a notorious reputation for not responding to complaints on time goes against it. Many current Tesla customers report waiting for weeks for a response when they are facing issues.

This is not all. Lower efficiency and limited portability along with difficulty in finding a certified installer are all setbacks for Tesla. However, the Tesla Solar Roof comes with many advantages as well. Its sleek design and appearance have managed to impress above-average homeowners. The fact that the installation cost includes complete roof revamping works both ways.

Read on to know all about Tesla Solar Roof. Here, you will also learn how it fares in comparison with conventional solar panels.

Pros Of Tesla Roof Tiles
