What Battery Is Best For Solar System

How Do You Compare Them All

Best Battery for Solar PV systems

Youve seen above that theres a lot of variety when it comes to batteries. Some enjoy low sticker prices. Others last a very long time. Some can be discharged more deeply than others. And of course, theres all different sizes and voltages as well, making it even more confusing to compare costs.

How do you take all this into account so you can compare apples to apples?

Dont worry, its not hard at all to get a rough estimate of a batterys long-term value. We simply need to calculate each batterys cost per kilowatt-hour for ALL the electricity it will ever store and pump out. Usually expressed as $ per kWh, this data point takes into account initial purchase price, capacity, voltage, depth of discharge, and cycle life. Pretty cool, huh? This one data point gives you a glimpse into almost every facet of the battery.

Heres the formula you can use to make your own calculations:

  • Capacity * DoD * Cycle Life * Voltage / 1000 = Total Lifetime Storage
  • Purchase Price / Total Lifetime Storage = Cost Per Lifetime kWh

Lets look at an example:

You spent $1,000 on two 300 amp-hour, 6 volt batteries. Each of these batteries last 1,500 cycles if you limit discharge to 50% of their capacity. You connected these in series to increase your battery systems voltage to 12 volts. First, lets figure out their total lifetime storage:

  • 300 * 50% * 1500 * 12 / 1000 = 2,700 kWh of total lifetime storage

Now, lets figure out the cost per lifetime kWh:

  • $1,000 / 2,700 = $0.37 per kWh

How Lasting Is A Solar Battery

The question can be answered in two different ways. One approach is by determining the period of time when a battery can keep the house powered. As a rule, a 100%-charged solar battery can provide the household with energy during the night when a PV array doesnt generate any electricity. In order to calculate this more exactly, some more factors should be taken into consideration. They include the battery power & capacity, your electricity consumption, as well as if your solar system is grid-tied.

For example, an average American family consumes about 30kWh of electricity daily. The capacity of most standard solar batteries is around 10 kilowatt-hours. Theoretically, in order to power the house by the batteries alone for 24 hours, such a family will have to install 3 such batteries.

In practice, it doesnt work that simple. PV modules produce electricity in the daytime, which is usually sufficient for six or seven hours. At the same time, very few battery types can perform at their maximal capacity. Most of them cannot be discharged by more than 90 percent, which means that a 10-kilowatt-hour battery can provide only 9 kilowatt-hours of useful energy.

What Is The Lifespan Of A Solar Battery

Solar batteries can last between 5 and 15 years. The lifespan of a solar battery will be longer if you maintain it and protect it from extreme weather conditions. A batterys total lifespan is also impacted by the DoD. If you draw more energy out of the battery than is recommended, you may end up affecting your batterys efficiency.

Different Types Of Solar Batteries

Learn which kind of battery is used for solar panels.

Lead Acid

For several years, lead-acid batteries have been used as a reliable energy supply for off-grid areas. They are typically deep-cycle and inexpensive. Lead-acid batteries are attributed to high power and discharge current but low energy. They take long to charge completely up to 14 hours.

These batteries must be disposed of correctly or they can be an issue to the environment due to their highly toxic nature.

Two types of lead-acid that are commonly used for solar panels: flooded and valve-regulated lead-acid batteries.

The flooded lead battery is a dependable option but requires watering and proper ventilation to function. The VRLA, which is equipped with valves for off-gassing regulation, comes as two types, gel and absorbed glass mat . These are suitable for cold and warm temperatures respectively. Although the VRLA batteries give enough flexibility for installation, their sensitivity to temperature may however pose a challenge to people looking for a permanent alternative to their grid supply.

Lithium-Ion

Lithium-ion batteries have become a more popular choice for solar systems all over the world. The development of this type of battery has a lot to do with its application in the electric car industry. Its prismatic form allows for ventilation and benefits use in solar systems.

Are Lithium Solar Batteries Really The Best For Solar Panels

Yes, lithium solar batteries outperform the competition when it comes to storing energy for a solar system. Theyre more efficient, charge faster, require no maintenance, and last substantially longer.

The efficiency comes from the very low internal resistance that allows the batteries to charge with minimal loss. This also means that they can discharge with minimal loss, so the energy in equals the energy out. When charging less efficient batteries, any loss is lost solar energy you cannot recover.

When you factor in these benefits, lithium solar batteries are a more cost-effective option than other battery types in the long run, despite their premium price tag.

Battery Capacity/how Long It Will Last

First and foremost, storage capacity is the most important thing to know about a 12v lithium-ion battery. Storage capacity is measured in watt-hours or amp-hours to approximate the battery’s discharge run time. Lithium-ion batteries come with the advantage of being able to discharge their capacity without damaging the system. As such, it is simple to calculate how long your battery will last. What Is The Best Voltage For Your Solar Battery System

Best Batteries for Solar Power System

The voltage question may seem irrelevant, but it is essential. Before you buy and install that battery energy storage system, you should decide which voltage your battery system will be made of.

For example, the batteries can either be 12V, 24V, or 48V. Which fits your needs better? This is something you should be aware of before the installation.

Since it is challenging to change the voltage after installing your power storage system, it becomes critical, therefore, to make the correct choice. The 12V battery is the purest form of battery and the most commonly used one in cars, boats, RVs, and more. If you require a simple power storage system, then the 12V battery system will be enough for you.

Presently the 24V and the 48V storage systems are the most commonly used in the solar systems. The reason behind this is the technical advantages they have as compared to the 12V.

In essence, higher DC voltages translate to lower costs. It also translates to a lower current for a similar amount of power.

Moreover, as more and more customers seem to require more energy over the years, the 12V DC system is not ideal. If for instance, your solar panels exceed 500 watts, you should consider a 24V system. On the other hand, if you plan to live off-grid, the 48V system will be ideal.

Use an electrician to help you to determine the optimal performance.

How Many Batteries Do You Need

First, you need to understand how much energy your battery is capable of storing. From there, you select a solar panel that replenish your energy at the appropriate rate based on your typical pattern of use.

Clear as mud, right?

Heres a basic formula.

Battery capacity is measure in amp hours, marked as Ah. You have to convert the number of Ah into watt hours. You do this by multiplying Ah by the voltage.

For example, if you have a 20Ah, 12V battery, the watt hours formula is 20 x 12 = 240. Your battery can supply 240 watts for one hour or 120 watts for two hours or 2 watts for 120 hours.

If youre a visual learner, you may find a video more helpful than a black and white formula on the page. So, while this video is specifically speaking of Renogy products, the formulas work for any situation in determining the size and number of batteries you need for your setup.

If you are unable to determine this on your own, consult an electrician.
