A total solar eclipse will block out the sun across the U.S. on Aug. 21 in a major event thats been dubbed the Great American Eclipse but it wont be the first or last time the country will see the astronomical phenomenon. To witness the next total solar eclipse in the U.S., though, Americans will have to wait another seven years.
The Aug. 21 total solar eclipse is unique in that it will be visible all across the U.S., with the moon appearing to completely blot out the sun in parts of 14 different states at different times throughout the day. That includes parts of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and North and South Carolina. The eclipse will start in Lincoln Beach, Oregon at 9:05 a.m. PDT and end in Charleston, S.C. at 4:09 p.m. EDT. For those in the path of the total solar eclipse, it will last two minutes and 40 seconds at most.
After Aug. 21 passes, the next total solar eclipse visible from Earth will pass through parts of South America and the South Pacific July 2, 2019, when the lunar disk will cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 33 seconds.
But the U.S. will have to wait another seven years for the next total solar eclipse to fall within its borders. According to NASA, on April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will stretch diagonally across the U.S. from Texas through the Northeast U.S. Heres a map showing the path of the 2024 total solar eclipse:

The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Nova Scotia
While Nova Scotia makes the list of provinces on the totality list, things here are similar to Tennessee and Michigan within the USA. Only a small portion of the province sees totality about 70 square miles but on the bright side, that is just about double the path area within Tennessee and Michigan combined, and there are actually quite a number of roads and even a few houses contained within the path here in Nova Scotia. As far as totality is concerned, we can only consider the very far northern coast. Locations like Meat Cove and Saint Margaret Village are noted, with Dingwall and even Asby Bay missing out. Most of the area of the province that lies in the path consists of mountains and rural forests, to be sure.
The shadow enters Nova Scotia at the beach to the west of Meat Cove at 16:39:24ADT, and leaves on the other side of Bay St. Lawrence, about as far northeast on the island you can get, at 16:41:05ADT. Less than a minute and a half spent in this far northern piece of land.
The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Prince Edward Island
The shadow first touches the island province at 16:35:26ADT, in its extreme northwest, on road 14 at a point identified by Google as Cape Wolfe. Only the western part of the island lies in totality the great Confederation Bridge, as well as all of Charlottetown, lie outside the path. The farther west you can get, the better, and the most totality seen anywhere in the province is at the very end of the island at the North Point Lightstation. The shadow visits this remote spot for 3m15s at 16:35:38ADT, and this is also the spot where totality leaves the island, at 16:38:53ADT.

Seeing One Total Solar Eclipse Isnt Enough
Once you see one total solar eclipse, its likely youll want to catch another. The next total solar eclipse is April 20, 2023, and its a hybrid eclipse. Totality is only visible in a very narrow path over Indonesia, Australia and Papua New Guinea. If you didnt witness the 2017 total eclipse, get ready for an experience that youve never seen before. The light will start to go dark as if the sun is setting early. When the moon fully covers the sun, you can take off your glasses for a few minutes and witness the event firsthand.
The sunlight forms a shimmering halo around the moon, creating an otherworldly effect like a scene from another planet. Its impossible to understand if you havent seen it in person. The experience is so incredible that people travel across the country to see a total eclipse.
What Is A Total Solar Eclipse
For a total solar eclipse to take place, the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. Weather permitting, people located in the center of the Moons shadow when it hits Earth will experience a total eclipse. The sky will become very dark for a few minutes, as if it were night. Normally, when looking at the Sun, you can only see the photosphere, the bright surface. However, extending about 5,000 km above the photosphere is the region of the solar atmosphere called the chromosphere. It is only seen during total solar eclipses, or with sophisticated telescopes, and its red and pinkish color gives the blackened Moon a thin halo of color against the greyish corona. People in the path of a total solar eclipse can also see the Suns corona, the outer atmosphere, which is otherwise usually obscured by the bright face of the Sun.
A total solar eclipse is the only type of solar eclipse where viewers can briefly remove their eclipse glasses, during the few moments when the Moon is completely blocking the Sun.

The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Arkansas
The shadow enters Arkansas at 13:45:35CDT, on the wooded shores of the Red River just south of where OK road 87 turns into AR road 108. Totality here lasts 4m5s, but we dont think there will be many intrepid eclipse chasers paddling down the river. You never know, though.
There are plenty of good-sized towns in Arkansas that you could choose for your eclipse experience: Hot Springs and Little Rock are possibilities, though if youre in the state capital youll want to be as far northwest as you can get Little Rock is very close to the southern limit! Conway may be a better choice, while Russellville will see 4m9s of totality at 13:50CDT. Clinton is almost right on centerline, while Jonesboro will get 2m29s at 13:55:30CDT.
Pine Bluff is south of the path! Head up to Little Rock, or even closer to the centerline at Conway. Fayetteville is north of the path, and even Fort Smith lies just tantalizingly outside of totality. Get over to Ozark, or even farther east on I-40, and enjoy a great show!
Arkansas bids farewell to totality at 7 seconds after straight-up 14:00CDT. Less than 15 minutes to sweep across the entire state from southwest to northeast! The community of St. Francis, on the border with Missouri, will see 3m24s of totality at 13:56:30CDT.

1918
The path of the eclipse on June 8, 1918, started south of Japan, went across the Pacific Ocean, and then across the United States. The largest city to see totality was Denver. The U.S. Naval Observatory obtained a special grant from Congress to send a team to Baker City, Oregon to observe the event. Howard Russell Bulter, an artist and physicist, painted a picture of the eclipse after only watching it for 112 seconds. The 1918 solar eclipse was the last time totality crossed the continental United States, from the Pacific to Atlantic.
1925
The total solar eclipse of January 24, 1925, was seen by perhaps millions of people in the Northeast United States, including the New York metropolitan area. People went out into the streets, on top of buildings to catch sight of the event. In addition to the regular spectators, researchers, and observers from around the U.S came to New York to study the eclipse. Data, photographs, and records were collected from airplanes and dirigibles dispatched for a better view.

1979
On February 26, 1979, eclipse viewers in the Pacific Northwest caught sight of a total solar eclipse. Totality was experienced in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and North Dakota. Many people traveled to view this eclipse since it would be the last total eclipse observed in the continental United States until 2017. Unfortunately, cloudy skies obscured viewing of the eclipse in certain parts of the region.

The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Illinois
No, we did not forget about Illinois! Totality enters Illinois at 13:58:15CDT along the Mississippi River, just south of East Cape Girardeau . Lots of great memories here from 2017, as we ourselves saw that eclipse from Carbondale! In 2024, Southern Illinois is again on everyones radar, as places like Carbondale , , Makanda , and Murphysboro once again take their place in the path! Giant City State Park will one again be able to host totality visitors, and the whole SIU Saluki experience will be like a great replay for a brand new generation of students!
And this time, Cairo is IN THE PATH! Just please make sure to pronounce it like the locals.
In 2024, a lot of Illinois towns get their turn at the totality they missed in 2017. Towns like Mt. Vernon, Salem , Greenup , Du Quoin and Lawrenceville will see the shadow, weather permitting. Beautiful Rend Lake might be a nice place to watch an eclipse from your boat just make sure to be as far south as possible, because the southern part of the lake gets about 15 seconds more totality than the northern part!
The shadow leaves the state at 14:07:04CDT, at a bend in the Wabash River on a road labeled E. 700th Ave, a few miles SE of Palestine. Not quite 9 minutes from first touch to last but what a lot of great memories that shadow will bring to everyone!
The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Quebec
Quebec sees totality first at Akwesasne at 15:24:52EDT, where residents and visitors will see 2m26s.
The path travels up the St. Lawrence river, and barely includes Montreal. Here, the river, the airport, and the downtown area are just barely in the path but the northern suburbs are not. Laval itself, for example, lies just outside the northern limit. Many people will be treated to a wonderful view , but it is important to remember how much totality falls off as we approach the path limits especially on the northern limit . At the University of Montreal, there will only be just about 1m in the shadow and at the curling club near Connaught Park, weve lost about 15 seconds of totality. And going the other direction, if you cross the river to Brossard, youll get a full extra minute!
Sherbrooke might be a better option though were hoping the entire population of Montreal doesnt invade their neighbors at eclipse time!
Heading further east, Drummondville lies right on the northern limit, and Victoriaville lies just outside it. Again, Sherbrooke may be your better option given favorable weather, of course!
The shadow continues eastward, and leaves the province at 15:32:47EDT in the woods east of Saint-Théophile, among all those little glacial lakes near the border with Maine. Quebecs total time in the shadow of the 2024 eclipse? Less than eight minutes

Why Is The Great North American Total Solar Eclipse Of 2024 A Big Deal
Total eclipses aren’t altogether that rare, occurring approximately every 18 months. But because the shadow of the moon is quite small when projected onto the Earth, only a tiny fraction of the planet actually experiences any given eclipse. On average, a specific location will only experience a total solar eclipse roughly every 375 years.
So not only is it somewhat uncommon for the United States to experience a total solar eclipse it’s only seen 21 of them since the country was founded in 1776 but also it’s very uncommon for a total solar eclipse to have such a long path across a wide section of the country. Before the 2017 eclipse, the last cross-country total solar eclipse happened in 1918. And following the 2024 eclipse, a cross-country total solar eclipse won’t happen again until 2045.
The eclipse will also last longer and cast a wider shadow than the 2017 eclipse, meaning it’ll be more easily viewed by more people.
