ADIDAS MENS SOLAR GLIDE 4 GORETEX

adidas made these running shoes with one goal in mind: to make winter your favourite season to train. They’re fully waterproof, with GORE-TEX plus RAIN.RDY to keep you dry in a downpour. The Stretchweb outsole works in harmony with the responsive Boost midsole, while Continental WinterGrip Rubber gives the perfect traction on all surfaces.

Adidas Solarglide General Info

The adidas Solar Glide enters into the solar family of adidas shoes, offering a neutral running shoe with a casual looking upper and a daily training ready outsole.

Similar to to the Solar Glide is the Solar Ultraboost which has a $20 higher price point, additional torsion stability and a better upper.

The Solar Glide ST variant of this shoe is also very similar, but with a $10 price bump for stronger medial support.

There really isnt a predecessor for this shoe, but I would place this Solar Glide shoe as a branched development off of the UltraBoost shoe.

The Solar Glide takes the sole design, and some of the upper, but saves on price by simplifying the lacing system down to melded overlays on the fabric versus the thicker plastic overlays on the Ultraboost shoes.

The major difference if you run it Solar Glide shoes versus Ultra Boost shoes will be the stability and cushioning, where the Solar Glide shoes will be less soft with more support.

These Solar Glide shoes were pleasant to lace up for the first time, as the flared heel counter made it simple and comfortable to put on the shoes.

I was a little annoyed with the stiff laces that seemed to be included for form over function, but managed to get an ok fit after a few minutes of adjusting the shoe. The midsole felt good, and ready for 50 miles of testing!

Best Waterproof Running Shoes For Rain

This article has been updated with current models for June 2022. The Saucony Peregrine 11 GTX has been replaced with its updated version.

Running shoes cannot be truly waterproof even with a Gore-Tex membrane.

Waterproof uppers are usually good at keeping the water out, but the low-cut design of most running shoes cannot completely prevent moisture from entering. Water from the occasional splash gets inside through the heel collar. And the same lining that keeps the water out will also slow the draining process.

Unless your waterproof jacket comes with a hood, its not 100% waterproof.

A running shoe with a Gore-Tex lining is like a waterproof rain jacket without a hood. The jacket will work to a certain extent, but only half as effectively as one with a waterproof shroud.

Socks are also good at absorbing water, so the dampness will eventually find its way in. As a side note, wearing a pair of waterproof socks is one way to keep your feet dry. We even wrote a guide on such a product.

Using a waterproof gaiter improves the chances of staying dry. However, waterproof gaiters are more comfortable under cooler temperatures because they dont breathe well.

So are waterproof running shoes useless? Why pay the Gore-Tex premium if theres no guarantee of staying dry?

A waterproof shoe also does a much better job of protecting against splashes when compared to open mesh footwear.

The occasional submersion in a flowing stream will not make the feet wet.

I Appreciate Waterproof Shoes Arent Everyones Cup Of Tea But These Tanks Are Quickly Becoming My First Pick For The Soggier Days Of Autumn

Picked these up on a bit a whim, knowing that the British Autumn and Winter are round the corner which means rain, rain and more rain.

My feet dont run hot, so the lack of breathability doesnt bother me too much. Ive taken these out on a few rainy days now and theyve performed really well.

Super duper comfy, and maybe the first pair of Adidas runners Ive ever had where they fit perfectly right out of the box.

Should note that their use is a bit limited as these are definitely ruggedised road shoes, and not really suitable for heavy trail work.

Adidas Solar Glide 4 Running Shoes

Adidas is now in their prime years of their Boost foam technology. A large amount of their running shoes feature this cell-structured foam thats comprised of TPU cells that feel like rubberized marshmallows.

This is pretty much the reason for the high price tag, as this foam is expensive to make but brings strong performance benefits.

Compared to standard EVA foam, Boost foam lasts longer, returns more energy, and stays springier when it gets cold.

This would be my third adidas shoe with Boost foam, and I can say its worth a $40 premium to get over regular foam.

As a note, you can look for other brands that use TPU foam, youll just have to find their special marketing term for it. The outsole of this shoe is a relatively thin single piece of rubber thats just a few mm thick.

It resembles an evenly spaced grid of squares with exposed foam in between the patches of rubber, the iconic web look for most adidas shoes. This rubber is made by Continental, yes, the same group that makes car tires.

What you get with this rubber is high abrasion resistance with less material. Unfortunately, you also get pretty squeaky shoes when you walk on tile. Good thing to keep in mind if you plan on wearing these guys around as regular shoes.

I was originally suspicious of this thin amount of rubber on a shoe, but testing these and other adidas shoes out with the same layout showed me that adidas shoes easily last 100+ miles before starting to show signs of wear on the outsole.

Adidas Solar Glide 4 Gore

A great choice for runners who like to keep their training up over the colder months, Adidas Solar Glide 4 GORE-TEX Trail Running Shoes combine protection against the weather with comfort and grip.

The waterproof GORE-TEX membrane keeps out the water whilst still allowing any moisture vapour to escape, keeping the feet warmer and more comfortable. Cold-weather-specific Continental WinterGrip rubber keeps traction levels high when the temperature falls, be that on damp tarmac or wet muddy trails and the Boost midsole design provides good energy return with each stride for a smooth, fast ride.

Adidas Solarglide Upper Info

I think this one of the first upper designs on an adidas shoe with Boost foam that I actually like!

Most other adidas variations on their Boost platform stretch the adidas logo across thick plastic overlays around the middle of your foot.

Although this makes for a strong fit, it feels like your feet are wearing a belt.

The adidas logo overlays that make up the lace support system on this Solar Glide shoe are thinner, flex more, and meld right to the fabric of the upper. You end up with a cleaner looking design and less of a restrictive feel.

I also like the use of this wrinkled looking tech fabric around the upper. It adds breathability, structure, and a design I havent seen on many uppers.

Its on the edge of looking distressed and stylish, so be sure to check them out a little closer before grabbing a pair. Also worth mentioning is the bizzare heel counter.

If I had to ask adidas one question, it would be why did you put a gap in your plastic heel counter to expose stretch fabric?

Adidas SolarGlide Heel

This gap at the back of the shoe does reduce pressure on your achilles, but is horrible for making a tight fit.

It gets even worse on a run, since your feet slide back further than youre used to in your stride. I really noticed this when Id jump into a workout. The fit felt sloppy at high speeds.

Another issue I have with the upper is the lacing system. Adidas got it right with the supports on the side, and even did a good job with the low profile tongue.

1) adidas Terrex Agravic TR Gore-Tex

Since we first published this guide, adidas has been consistent with its entry-level waterproof shoe offerings. The Terrex Agravic TR GTX is one of the many waterproof trail shoes from the German brand.

At a retail price of $100, the Terrex Agravic TR Gore-Tex is adidass least expensive waterproof shoe. Its great value too. While the upper and midsole is bereft of high-performance materials like a Continental rubber outsole or Boost foam, the Agravic TR gets its fundamentals right.

This shoe uses a firm EVA foam midsole and aggressive outsole lugs for cushioned protection and a stable grip on the trails. Theres no rock plate, but in lieu, one gets a relatively flexible forefoot.

The Gore-Tex fitted upper uses a classic design, and relies on thick, stitched panels to reinforce the exteriors. The wide midfoot straps allow the laces to be cinched quickly.

2) Brooks Cascadia 16 GTX

Just like the Brooks Ghost 14 GTX, theres a $30 premium for the waterproof version of the Cascadia. Our detailed trail-tested review is here.

As a standalone shoe, the Brooks Cascadia 16 is a competent trail running shoe that gets comprehensively reworked for 2022. The top-to-bottom redesign of the Cascadia 16 results in numerous performance-related updates.

The rock plate of the 16 is now a ballistic rock shield a flexible material that improves the range of movement. The numerous grooves on the outsole help too.

Comparison: Adidas SOLAR Boost vs. Solar GLIDE

1) Brooks Ghost 14 GTX

The Ghosts versatile ride and fit character has made it a commercially successful fixture within Brookss running line. The changes on the last years Ghost 13s made the ride smoother, and the said improvements carry forward to the Ghost 14.

The single-density EVA foam midsole of the G-13 was an improvement over the dual-density midsole of the Ghost 12.

The Ghost 14 benefits from the same performance upsides. Theres ample cushioning and versatility, be it regular training runs or longer workouts that require a higher level of comfort.

This is a Brooks shoe, so the upper is comfortable and secure. The engineered mesh upper and padded heel/tongue have a positive influence on the fit and feel.

The same traits are built into the Gore-Tex version of the Ghost, so its an excellent daily trainer that keeps the feet dry during rains.

2) Asics GT-2000 10 GTX

If you want to know more, our review of the standard GT-2000 10 is here.

It has a medial post molded into the inner midsole for the old-school anti pronation touch, and the functional upper is comfortable and fits well.

If your idea of a waterproof daily trainer is a comfortable mild-support running shoe, then its hard to go wrong with the GT-2000 10 GTX.

The GTX version of the GT-2000 10 has just been released, so its availability is spotty. In the meanwhile, its also worth considering the GT-2000 9 GTX.
