## How Do You Calculate Solar Battery Power

Battery energy storage capacity depends on the length of time you want the batteries to supply your home and your energy consumption.

Lets assume a home energy consumption of 30kWh per day, over 24 hours. If you wanted the batteries to last for 24 hours, then the battery kWh would be roughly equal to the energy consumption.

If you wanted to be able to last for 2 days, then simply double the battery capacity.

Off grid system energy storage is often sized to account for 2 full days of autonomy, just in case there is extensive cloud cover and no power is produced at all for one day.

Battery capacity required for 2 days = energy consumption 30kWh x 2 = 60kWh

Battery Ah required = 60kWh/battery bank voltage = 60000/48 = 1250Ah

Note: Lead-acid deep-cycle batteries have a recommended Depth of Discharge of 50%. This means that double the calculated Ah will have to be installed:

Battery Ah required = 1250Ah x 2 = 2500Ah

## Good For The Environment

These results are good news for the environment. Economic and environmental priorities have aligned for both, its generally better to go big with your solar system. However, there may still be competing demands on your capital. In particular, when building a home its best to prioritise items that are difficult to install later, such as efficient windows and wall insulation. If you have to make such a choice, it may be wise to delay the solar installation until funds become available.

This article was very helpful. Thank you very much!In this you have covered on grid and off grid only. I am looking for a mix of these, where I want a solar battery backup during power outage, and the excess generated is sent/exported to the grid. Do we have a possibility of this one?

Thats pretty nice description. Now, I have a house that is yet to be constructed and I dont know my average electricity consumption but I know that I will be running 3-4 fans, for almost all the time in summer, 8 20 watt tube lights for about 4 hrs, 1 geyser for about 2 hr in winters and some 3-4 10-12 watt LED bulbs in lawn for about 3 hrs all through the year. ACs wont be there. And add a 50 inch TV running for say 8 hrs a day apart from charging my laptops, phones etc. how many solar panels I will need with no dependency on government supply?

The previous section assumed that you can mount solar panels at an ideal location: Perfectly south facing, with a great tilt-angle, and without any shading. What if your roof, or other location, is not quite that good? In most cases we can still accurately figure out what it will take to produce the kWhs needed. All we need is a little help from the US tax payers!

The US government, and NREL in particular, has created a very handy online tool that can calculate solar PV yield for any place on earth, taking orientation, angle, and even the local weather patterns such as cloud cover into account. The module type of Standard should be fine for most, we can also leave Array type to the default of Fixed . The system losses of 14.08% are fine too. For the Tilt we will change this to 45 degrees, the latitude of Ottawa, just like our earlier example, and the Azimuth is fine at 180 degrees .

The sunlight available to produce electricity varies greatly throughout the United States. Southwest states like California and Arizona get the most sunshine, while northeast states like New York and Massachusetts get the least.

However, you should not discard solar power just because you live in a state that isnt sunny. For example, New York only gets moderate sunshine, but it has very high electricity prices. Solar panels are worth it in this case, since they achieve high savings even with reduced production. Saving 750 kWh when you are charged 25 cents/kWh is better than saving 1,000 kWh at 12 cents.

Many banks finance for solar panels, and you can pay off the loan with the electricity savings achieved. With those variables in mind, we can roughly estimate the number of solar panels for home that you’ll need. In this example, we’ll use the average annual energy consumption, solar panel wattage and hours of sunlight that we mentioned earlier.

Let’s say that your property receives four hours of sunshine each day, and you’re purchasing 325-watt solar panels. In that case, each panel can generate 1,300 watt-hours per day . Assuming that your energy usage is in line with the average of 29 kWh per day, you’d need 23 325-watt panels to create enough electricity for your home.
