What Previous Customers Are Saying

Tesla Solar Panels CHEAPER than a DIY Install

One customer praises how great the solar panels work in the winter. This is a common concern for those who live in places where there are extreme weather conditions. This thread says that the snow doesnt stick to solar panels, and they hold up well.

People claim that their solar panels dont meet Teslas promised energy production levels. One Reddit thread claims that they had issues with their solar panels and had trouble getting a hold of Tesla to come and fix the problem. This suggests that the customer service team may be challenging to reach.

One review even claims that their credit rating took a hit after dealing with Tesla. They didnt contact the customer with any bills after installation. The credit had expired, and Tesla hadnt made the customer aware.

From most reviews, some customer service representatives are great, while others are not the best.

How Are Teslas Solar Panels So Cheap

Teslas easy ordering process is one of the reasons they have such low prices.

Their brand name recognition also helps a lot. Tesla doesnt have to do a whole lot of work to get people to their website. People know Tesla – so they go right to it. This, plus the fact that their order process is entirely online and they only offer four standard system sizes eliminates a ton of overhead costs that many other solar companies face.

Not to mention, Tesla is a large company – they can afford to undercharge for their panels and take a slight loss at the front end of the deal.

Can You Finance Tesla Solar Panels

Tesla is well aware that the initial upfront cost of a solar system can be too much for many people. This is why the company offers a solar loan, where you can get the installation done and pay for it with monthly installments.

Youll need to pay roughly 10% as a down payment, after which the monthly cost will depend on your system size. For the small, 4.25 kW system, you can expect a monthly payment of around $80, and around $300 a month for the biggest available system. Teslas solar loan has a 10-year repayment term and 2.99% APR

Background Of The Tesla Solar Panels Rental Program

Can I Use Solar Panels Without A Battery?

On August 16, 2019, we, along with most in the renewable energy industry, applauded the launch of the Tesla solar panels rental program.

The program rents solar panels to consumers on a monthly subscription. Tesla promoted that the main advantage of the rental program over Tesla’s other zero-down solar offerings was that there was no long-term contract. You can hand the solar panels back whenever you like!

At the time, SolarReviews took a look at the Energy Order Subscription Agreement, the contract for the Tesla solar panels rental.

We didn’t like that Clause 3 allowed Tesla to change their monthly subscription amount whenever they like, by however much they like. We felt that a solar agreement should have little to no price escalation being that consumers savings increase over time, as electricity prices rise.

The only remedy a consumer would have in response to a ridiculous increase in the monthly subscription fees would be to terminate the agreement. The original contract stated that if the consumer terminates the agreement, they will need to pay a removal fee of $1,500.

We thought this was fair. Tesla would not make much profit from the removal of the solar panels at $1,500, effectively discouraging Tesla from aggressively raising its monthly subscription fee, even if Clause 3 of the agreement allowed them to do so.

As such, we thought $1,500 was a fair fee for removal.

What Exactly Are The Gaf Solar Shingles

Leading roofing manufacturer GAFs nailable solar shingles are designed with roofers top-of-mind in order to make installation a breeze. Image source: News Atlas

GAFs solar shingle design combines the conventional asphalt roof shingle material theyre known for with the monocrystalline solar cells of a solar panel.

The top portion of the shingle is made of asphalt, which means it can be nailed right to the roof like regular shingles – no racking or extra mounting equipment necessary. This makes it incredibly easy for roofing contractors to install them.

The bottom portion of the solar shingle is what will generate the electricity. When installed, that portion will overlap the asphalt material of the solar shingle before it. The shingles lay flush against your roof, staying right in line with the regular asphalt shingles covering the remainder of the surface of the roof.

All of the wiring is located on the side of the shingle, where they can be easily connected together to create a functioning solar electric system.

Federal Settlement For Allegations Of False Claims Act Violations

In September 2017, as part of a legal settlement with the federal government, SolarCity agreed to pay a $29.5 million penalty regarding allegations that the company overstated the cost of facilities it developed and submitted claims for under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which would be a violation of the False Claims Act. SolarCity dropped its lawsuit, Sequoia Pacific Solar I, LLC v. United Statesin which the company alleged the federal government owed it more moneyas part of the settlement.

As part of the settlement, the company agreed to “release all pending and future claims against the U.S. for additional payments from the grant program”. The move ended a five-year investigation.

Companies Race To Make Solar Shingles More Affordable

Tesla first made solar shingles a thing in 2016, when the company unveiled the Tesla Solar Roof. Blending asphalt shingles with the means to generate energy was a new ideaone that other companies have tried to emulate to transform the roofs of American homes.

Consumers have been hesitant to adopt solar shingles because of the steep cost to manufacture and install them. Also, they are not yet as efficient as regular solar panels.

GAF Energy is the latest company to join the solar shingle race to try to overcome those issues. One of the largest roofing companies globally, GAF Energy announced it is launching solar shingles with the debut of its Timberline Solar. The company says its option will be a cheaper alternative to Teslas Solar Roof. The company is already winning attention with a Best of Innovation Award for Smart Cities at CES 2022, the annual mega tech show that runs this week in Las Vegas and virtually.

Were part of the worlds largest roofing manufacturer, Martin DeBonon, president of GAF Energy, told CNBC. We have access to materials that typical solar companies dont have access to. No one has ever specifically tried to make a solar product that a roofer can install. And weve done it, and our product goes on with just a nail gun. It goes on twice as fast as typical solar.

How Long Does It Take To Install Tesla Solar Panels

Exploring Tesla solar panels game changing price

This question is top-of-mind for many homeowners interested in Teslas new product. Unfortunately, the answer probably wont satisfy most.Technically, with most accredited solar companies, the installation of any solar array should only take one day to complete.

The issue with Tesla solar products? Historically, Tesla has struggled with supply, creating backlogs and waitlists for interested consumers. This causes would-be customers to wait anywhere from a couple weeks to a few months to just get the products.

While Tesla leadership states that their supply chain issues have since been resolved, customers tell a different story.

While we cannot guarantee that you will see long wait times for the new solar panels, we can offer the historical context. If you absolutely want to install Tesla solar products, you will most likely have to wait for them to become available first.

Is The Tesla Solar Roof Worth It

The Tesla solar roof isnt that much more expensive than a conventional roof replacement and solar panel installation. Depending on the scenario, the solar roof could actually end up being cheaper! If the slight cost difference doesnt matter to you and you need to replace your roof, then maybe its worthwhile to get the solar roof.

But were not so sure the Tesla solar roof is the right way to go solar, even if the price is competitive. For one thing, Tesla is notorious for having subpar customer service for their energy division, which is reflected on SolarReviews. People have reported waiting weeks to hear back from their Tesla advisors if there is an issue with their system.

Tesla is also extremely unreliable. Despite being introduced in 2016, Tesla didnt start installing solar roofs until 2018, and its still unknown how many have actually been installed. Then in mid-2020, Tesla started canceling solar roof preorders after homeowners had paid their deposits – claiming the sites werent within their service territory. Were also not huge fans of how vague they are about literally everything around the solar roof – whats the actual pricing? What are the complexity requirements? Why doesnt Tesla supply official operating specifications for the active shingles?

Reputable local solar installers will be able to provide you with a more personalized installation experience, and will be there to support you for the 25-year lifespan of your system.

How Long Will Gaf Solar Shingles Last Are They Durable

GAF Energy offers a 25-year warranty on their solar shingles. According to the warranty, GAF covers their shingles for 25 years against manufacturing defects that cause roof leaks, and offers a 15-year wind coverage warranty for wind speeds up to 130 miles per hour.

They also include a 25-year solar production output warranty that states the shingles will operate at 84.8% of their original rated output at the end of 25 years. Most solar panels will operate closer to 86% of their original rated output, meaning they would generate a little more electricity over time than the solar shingles, but not by much.

Since GAF hasnt released a specification sheet for these shingles yet, we dont have all the information wed like to, such as the hail rating, but we do know they are the first product to receive a UL7103 certification. This safety certification was designed specifically for ‘building integrated photovoltaics’ , or in other words, solar shingles.

Implication Onto Electricity Bill Management And Energy Investment

There is no silver bullet in electricity or energy demand and bill management, because customers have different specific situations, e.g. different comfort/convenience needs, different electricity tariffs, or different usage patterns. Electricity tariff may have a few elements, such as daily access and metering charge, energy charge or peak demand charge . PV is a promising option for reducing energy charge when electricity price is reasonably high and continuously increasing, such as in Australia and Germany. However, for sites with peak demand charge in place, PV may be less attractive if peak demands mostly occur in the late afternoon to early evening, for example residential communities. Overall, energy investment is largely an economical decision and it is better to make investment decisions based on systematical evaluation of options in operational improvement, energy efficiency, onsite generation and energy storage.

How Many Solar Panels Are Needed To Charge A Tesla Powerwall 2

When calculating the solar energy needed to charge a Tesla Powerwall 2, it’s the rating of the panels in your solar PV system as much as the number of panels that determine how much energy they can generate to charge the battery storage system. The ratings of your panels, when added together, give a number of kW that can feed into the Powerwall battery, but some of this electricity will also be used by your building at the same time.

For example, a fairly large residential 4 kW solar array could produce around 20 kWh of electricity on an average sunny summer day, which would be enough to fully charge a Tesla Powerwall 2 and run your home. A Powerwall can run an average home throughout spring, summer and autumn, and for even longer if your demand is low.

At times of the year with less hours of light and sunshine, the same solar array might only produce about a quarter of the kWh that it does in the summer, which usually means that you will need to use more electricity from the grid, along with your Tesla Powerwall 2.

Why Consider A Home Solar Backup System

Tesla Solar and Powerwalls: 100% Whole Home Backup!

A home solar backup system is a solar backup battery that stores converted solar energy into a system with both on-grid and off-grid capabilities.

This means that you can still get electricity from the grid if you need it while at the same time being independent of the grid for your supply of electricity.

For example, suppose your household consumes more electricity than it produces. In that case, your household can make up for this energy deficit by drawing energy from the grid.

Meanwhile, at the same time, if the grid were to go out, your homes solar backup battery wouldnt be affected. So essentially, home solar backup systems are energy system options that get the best of both on-grid and off-grid solar systems.

How Do Tesla Solar Panels Compare

There are certainly several more powerful options than Tesla available on the market these days although not by much and certainly some more affordable options. For example, LG now makes a 440-watt panel, and some panels out there have an impressive 22% average efficiency, with technology only getting better by the day.

Still, its the entire system, trusted name, 25-year warranty, and customer service that youre paying for, and when viewed as a whole, there are few other brands that can compare with the quality of Tesla.

How Much Does A Tesla Powerwall Cost

Once again, cost will be a major question and consideration for potential Powerwall owners. The main factor that will determine how much your Tesla solar battery setup will cost is how many Powerwalls you actually need based on the size of your panel system.

While every system will differ, each installation type will be unique and your mileage may vary, we reached out to Tesla to ask about general cost estimates and found the right rule of thumb to consider is:

  • One Powerwall: $10,500
  • Two Powerwalls: $17,000
