Solar Farm Cost Per Acre

New Prospects For Agriculture

The unseen cost of solar farms on taxpayers in North Carolina

Fabian Karthaus is planning on expanding his solar field in the future. At the moment, his berries grow under 0.4 hectares of solar panels. I would like to expand this to an area of 8 or 10 hectares, then it will really be worthwhile.

However, Karthaus will have to be patient. So far, he says, the expansion is still cumbersome for farmers in Germany.

But he hopes that will change soon. And he is already advising other farmers to definitely start dealing with the topic, even if it still takes a while to implement in their own fields.

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, the United States has a 100 GW solar capacity that can power up to 18.9 million homes. Since 2010, solar power has had a 42% annual growth rate.

Overall, solar panels present a new and profitable way to increase your income. The industry is growing rapidly, so you can expect to find success.

Many types of solar panels vary in efficiency, cost, and electricity production. However, 40% of solar farms use around 3.5 acres to produce one GWh each year. This value translates to 0.28571 GWh/acre/yr, or 285.71 MWh/acre/yr.

Nevertheless, the amount of solar irradiance in your region will change the amount that your panels produce. How much money does 1 acre of solar panels make?

In 2019, you could sell solar power for $27.40/MWh. As a result, you could make approximately $7,828.45 per acre.

Factors Affecting Solar Farm Revenue Potential

The long-term value of any solar installation depends largely on the initial investment. In other words, a solar farm is guaranteed to consistently produce energy, which will always be in high demand, but the revenue potential of a farm may only be fully realised once the initial investment has been paid off. Thus, the smaller the initial investment, the sooner the solar farm can start turning profit. One of the best ways to ensure a fast turnaround of capital is to purchase the solar equipment required, though there are subsidized, or even $0-down loans for solar projects available to investors.

The primary factors affecting a solar farms potential revenue are:

  • Sunlight availability
  • Location of the farm
  • SREC values in the area
  • SITC availability in the area
  • Additional incentives

Sunlight Availability

In order to produce as much electricity as possible, and thus generate the maximum revenue, the land selected for solar farm development is crucially important. South-facing land is preferable, ideal if that south-facing land is free of obstructions which may cast shadows on solar panels at any point during the day/year. If such obstructions exist, they should be removed , in order to maximise the potential output of the farm.

Several things are driving this phenomenon:

  • Depending on farm-land output, solar farm return is increasing every year
  • The land is easier to manage, requiring little work after solar installation
  • Energy is in big demand and new sources are desperately needed
  • Government loans and grants are making it more attractive for land-owners
  • Leasing land to solar companies is an easy way to gain revenue from under-performing land

A Final Note On Solar Farms

Solar Farm Cost Per Acre

With the obvious push for renewables looming on our radar, it goes without saying that Australia is gearing up for a massive boom in the large-scale solar industry. With more than 40 new farms over 50MW to join our energy mix in the next few years, large-scale solar is soon to play a much larger role in our energy generation.

Rooftop solar still dominates the solar industry, making up around 20% of our renewable energy output in 2018, according to the Clean Energy Council. Components Of A Solar Farm

Most solar farms operate with PV panels. These panels operate using the photoelectric effect. They absorb photons from the sun and release free electrons. Capturing the electrons generates an electric current that you can use as electricity.

A solar panel features many photovoltaic cells. These solar cells feature thin semiconductor wafers that get treated to create an electric field with one positive and one negative end. When photons strike the cell, electrons get loosened from the semiconductors atoms.

This electricity is in the direct current form. It enters the central inverter on the solar farm that transforms it to alternating current electricity. The AC power enters a medium voltage transformer to boost the voltage.

Lastly, the electricity enters the distribution system. It may pass through a recloser, breaker, or disconnect switch and metering as well.

Solar Farm Acres Per Megawatt

Referring to the number of acres required to produce 1MW of solar electricity. Calculating the acreage per megawatt must take into consideration all of the equipment which shall consume space on the farm: primarily the panels and the structural components . Typically, a 1MW solar power plant installation will require around 4-5 acres, assuming that every kilowatt of solar electricity production will require about 100 square feet of space.

Potential Gains And Profitability Of Solar Farms

Here we will look at existing plants to determine the approximate solar farm income per acre.

Pavagada Solar Park is the largest solar farm in the world, with a 13,000-acre area. It produces about 2,050 MW each year. The companies it sells to save $1.7 million per hour or about $7.4 billion a year from a 12-hour day.

Many farmers in the United Kingdom have begun converting their infertile soil into solar farms. While the UK is not known for its sunny weather, plenty of people have profited from selling solar electricity.

For instance, Mandy Wilson has a 30-acre solar farm. She earns about £30,000 each year on rent from the panels.

Your solar farm profit per acre will vary based on the size and efficiency of your array. How much money does a solar farm make? On average, you might profit around $21,250-$42,500 per acre.

Other potential gains from operating a solar farm include:

  • Guaranteed steady income from a solar land lease throughout the term, which is usually 20-25 years
  • Benefitting residents with new tax revenue because the local government can direct the funds to improve community services
  • Improved air quality, reduced pollution, and fewer harmful emissions compared to nonrenewable energy

Impact Of Fitting Solar In 2021

Solar energy development company looks to build solar farm in Clinton County

In 2012, farmer Andrew Bullock had 198 solar panels installed on his farm and was pleased with the results: We are both saving and making money. Anyone who has significant daytime energy use will make solar pay, he commented.

The table below compares Andrews 2012 solar installation with how the figures would look for a roof mounted 50kWp installation in 2021.

Despite the subsidy no longer being available, the reduction in panel costs and the continued rise in grid supplied electricity means that the 2021 system provides a better return than under the high subsidy rate provided in 2012. This is also based on using just 60% of the solar electricity onsite.

How Much Does A Solar Farm Cost

Solar farm installation costs are typically between $0.89 to $1.01 per watt. That means that a 1 megawatt solar farm would cost between $890,000 and $1.01 million.

These figures are based on the SEIAs average national cost figures in Q4 2021. They also assume that you already have the land to build the solar farm on.

Solar farms are much cheaper to build and operate than rooftop solar systems. SEIA stats show that residential solar panel systems which are typically under 20 kW cost $3.06 per watt.

In other words, the cost per watt for a solar farm is well under a third of the cost of installing residential solar power.

The low cost of solar farms is also why utilities are increasingly using solar farms when adding new power generation capacity. Solar isnt just one of the cheapest sources of renewable energy, it’s now also competitive with fossil fuel energy sources, as well!

Environmental Considerations During Planning Stage:

Environmental considerations are exceptionally important and you will need to demonstrate:

  • How the farm may affect the soil and soil structure of the site and surrounding area
  • Wildlife habitats and designated sites Is the farm located in a sensitive area ?
  • Effects on specific, protected wildlife species is the site home to any protected wildlife species, such as great crested newts?
  • The potential environmental impact the site may have on the landscape
  • Whether or not the building of a solar farm will have an impact on the character of the landscape
  • Whether the farm would cause any damage to geological and archaeological features
  • Implications of water run-off will the site cause flooding or possibly contaminate any groundwater or watercourses?

Compared to wind farms, solar farms have less visual impact and create no noise issues. However, it is important to ensure that the farm is well screened to minimise the visual impact. Doing so, as well as working with the community to develop the site as a co-operative, can help to reduce any potential objections or blockages to the planning process.

Income Opportunities For Solar Farms

The rental incomes from solar farms continue to perform well, with current subsidy free solar rents at anywhere between £850 £1,100 per acre per annum depending on size and location. Top up revenue rents offer another incentive for landowners, with many achieving percentages of around 4-6%. This means that where 6% of the developers revenue exceeds the acreage-based rent, the landowner is paid a top up between the two figures.

The caveat is that achieving these rates depend on the amount of solar radiation the site receives and various costs including connecting to the national grid, planning, installation and the cost of finance. It is also worth remembering that in general legal and development costs are paid by the developers, leaving the landowner free to accrue the rental income.

Another benefit is the long term income available from solar. Leasing arrangements are generally over 30-50 years, meaning that solar can provide guaranteed, index-linked rental income for a number of years which can be passed down the generations with the land.

How Many Solar Panels Fit In One Acre

Bennett

There is physical room for about 740kW of solar panel surface on one acre, but the panels are mounted in rows with walk spaces allowing for maintenance, so a form factor of 0.58 is applied.

In general, 1kW of solar power can be fitted into 100 square feet. There are 43560 square feet in an acre, so the possible solar power can be found by:

43560/100x1kw= 435.6kW

Solar farms are installed in locations with high irradiance values, such as Nevada. The Peak-sun-hours value for Nevada is 2348.

Power produced by 1 acre solar depends on location irradiance

Theoretical solar energy generated by 1 acre in one year equals:

435.6kW x 2348kWh/m2 = 1022mWh

1022mW x 0.58 = 592.76 megawatt-hours of solar power

How Do Solar Leasing Companies Make Money

The owner of the solar farm makes money when the electricity is sold. The amount you pay to lease your land depends on the electricity rates charged in your region and the prices charged by solar farms. The electricity rate per kilowatt-hour is based on the type and number of panels in the solar farm.

Release The Proposals To Individuals And Firms

Several individuals or firms may inquire about the terms of service while the construction is ongoing. Once the solar farm structure is wholly constructed, you could contact industries, firms, and individuals and discuss the services you offer.

Aside from these, its crucial to tackle the service costs and payment options of utilizing your solar farm business power.

Feed In Tariff For Agricultural Solar

The Feed in Tariff for renewable energy will pay farmers up to 16p/kWh for all electricity that an agricultural solar project generates and consumes. Electricity that goes unused is fed back to National Grid and earns farmers even more per kWh with 4.5p being added to the standard rate per kWh.

Solar photovoltaic panel installations for agricultural projects of around 200kW can earn around £15,000 per year. Systems of upto 50kw in size currently can earn around £5500 per year. Heavy use plants where dairy or grain driers are regularly used normally consume around 90% of the generated energy saving thousands from your bill. 50kw Dairy installed system in Sussex saves over £4000 per year on top of the tariff equaling almost a £10k profit.

Support From The Solar Trade Association

Solar Energy UK is a not-for-profit organisation that offers resources and guidance on all aspects of solar energy production for both commercial and domestic installations. All members of the Association follow best-practice guidelines to ensure solar farms are delivering a positive influence on both the energy production of the UK, and the environment. Their main points include:

  • Focusing on building solar farms on non-agricultural land or land which is of lower agricultural quality
  • A sensitivity to nationally and locally protected landscapes and nature conservation areas, and ensuring the industry does everything to enhance the ecological value of the land
  • Minimising the visual impact of farms and maintaining appropriate screening throughout the lifetime of the project, managed through a Land Management and/or Ecology plan
  • Working with the community before submitting planning applications, seeking their support and listening to their input on how the development should take place
  • Encouraging diversification by integrating continued agricultural use or incorporating biodiversity measures
  • Buying goods and services locally, and employing local traders and operating staff
  • Having due consideration for both the environment and local people during construction, and demonstrate solar stewardship of the land for the lifetime of the project
  • Offering investment opportunities to communities so that they can become shareholders in local solar farm developments
  • How Much Money Does 1 Acre Of Solar Panels Make Per Year Solar Farm Profit

Based on my previous calculation 1 acre of land would produce in Nevada about 351.3mWh of enegy per year. So how much money is this amount of electrical power worth?

Compared to a domestic solar installation, this is a huge amount of energy and it isnt sold back to the utility companies as it is with home solar. Solar farm output is traded by mWh price in specialized markets, so revenue can fluctuate a little.

The average price per mWh is around $27/mWh, so 531mWh from a 1 acre solar farm would be worth $14337.

    Solar Farm Lease Rates

Granted your property adheres to all necessary solar farm land requirements, the typical solar farm lease rate varies between $600 $1,200 per acre forevery year of your contract.

If youre able to hire a savvy lawyer who will tirelessly advocate for you during contract negotiations with a solar developer, you could make sure annual rent increases are included as well as adjustments for inflation.

If your lawyers negotiating skills are outstanding or the solar developer is desperate for your land adding in partial royalty payments would increase your income even more.

How Much Money Can You Make With A Solar Farm

    Shaffer Landfill Solar

In terms of revenue, you can earn in the ballpark of $40,000 per year by selling the electricity from a 1 MW solar farm.

Heres an explanation of how solar farms generate revenue.

Utility-scale solar farms sell their power by entering Purchase-Power Agreements for their generation on the wholesale electricity market. This can be done using electricity marketplaces such as LevelTen Energy.

According to LevelTen Energys P25 national index, in Q4 2021, solar power traded at $29.75 per MWh. The P25 index shows the 25th percentile of PPAs traded for less than this, while 75% traded for higher, and thus is a pretty conservative figure.

Based on the national average of four peak sun hours per day, we know that the average 1 MW solar farm would make 1,460 MWh per year. That means that the average 1 MW solar farm can expect an annual revenue of roughly $43,500 per year.

These, of course, are just average figures. Your actual revenue can vary significantly based on factors such as solar power production in your area and the going rate for solar generation in the wholesale market.

Moreover, do note that there are wide variations in PPA values based on the wholesale electricity prices in your Regional Transmission Organization area.
