How To Build Your Own Solar System

Are You Skilled Enough

Build Your First Solar Power System! Beginner Tutorial Easily Explained, Budget Friendly

You may already have expert directions with you and even controller automation that incorporates instructions given for the equipment.

They may give you the confidence to install the PV panel system on your own, but they do not guarantee the life and efficiency of the solar module you have built. It is possible that within a few months, youll end up with a panel that no longer works because of extreme temperature changes, moisture inside the panels, or flaws in its design or installation.

It is not enough that you have the needed instructions for building the panels you also require the skills required for solar cell installation. These panels are sturdy, allowing them to survive several years even under harsh weather conditions.

So if you want to build your own without professional help or at least minimal assistance from a solar home company, you need to spend lots of time researching and gaining experience. In particular, you will need to become familiar with soldering and electrical wiring. This way, you can match the manufactured products with the right components that optimize sunlight gathering even during harsh weather conditions. DIY solar installation is hard work, but building your PV cells means matching solar panel manufacturers installation abilities.

Am I Eligible For Any Tax Breaks As An Independent Homeowner Doing The Solar Installation

In the U.S., the federal solar tax credit, also called the investment tax credit , allows you to deduct 26% of the cost of your solar install with no cap. You may do this as the installer or if you hire a company to do the work.

At this point, there is no plan to extend this tax credit past 2021 to homeowners under the current Administration, although a newly elected executive branch and Congress could do so.

Solar Renewable Energy Certificates are another incentive homeowners have. With this program, you sell energy certificates to your utility and get cash back. The system works like the stock exchange. SREC values vary from state to state and month to month.

You must check with your state and local authorities to find out about any other incentives or rebates. These may be conditional on your hiring an approved solar company to perform the installation.

How Many Solar Panels Does It Take To Run A House Off

An American home with 2,000 square feet consumes approximately 11,000 kilowatt-hours per year, according to most data. In other words, if we divide our total consumption by the expected output of one solar panel, we find that thirteen panels of this size would be sufficient to power a house of this size.

Then, affix the it with a very strong adhesive he used 3M tape though you could do some research to figure out what other materials would work as well.

You can also add some rope to ensure the panels will not fall off and shatter or hurt cars driving behind you.

After connecting this to your battery, you can easily charge your phone, bluetooth speaker, and other devices.

Plugged Into The Grid: Mini Systems For Your Home

Build Your Own Model Solar System

Ever more people are meeting their electricity needs by purchasing mini solar panel systems, known as plug-in solar devices. The small photovoltaic systems come with one or two modules and have a power capacity of up to 600 watts each. That’s enough to meet up to 30% of the energy needs of one household, for example providing electricity for the fridge, washing machine, dishwasher or computer.

What is unique about small panel systems is that they can be plugged into any normal household outlet, which is how they feed the solar power into the grid. Installation is easy it’s literally “plug and play” while the devices have been deemed safe. Another benefit is that you don’t need an electrician to install them. They can go on your balcony, your roof or in your garden or yard.

“There are already several hundreds of thousands of these types of systems in use in Germany and its neighboring countries. The devices are basically very safe, so far they’re not known to have caused any kind of damage,” says Thomas Seltmann, a photovoltaic expert at the Consumer Association for the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

And there is a lot of interest. “We are at the beginning for a boom of plug-in solar devices,” says Seltmann.

Select A Solar Charge Controller

Alright, so we have batteries and we have solar, now we need a way to manage putting the power from the solar into the batteries. An extremely rough calculation to figure out what size solar charge controller you need is to take the watts from the solar, and divide it by the battery bank voltage. Add another 25% for a safety factor.

Now theres a bit more to consider with selecting the charge controller. Charge controllers are available with two major types of technologies, PWM and MPPT. In short, if the voltage of the solar panel array matches the voltage of the battery bank, you can use a PWM charge controller. So, if you have a 12V panel and a 12V battery bank, you can use PWM. If your solar panel voltage is different than the battery bank, and cant be wired in series to make it match, you need to use an MPPT charge controller. If you have a 20V solar panel and you have a 12V battery bank, you need to use MPPT charge controller.

DIY BASIC SOLAR SYSTEM: Your very own solar power system on a budget

There are a lot of solar cell types that you can choose from. There are the Chinese ones, with good results, the best price, but not guaranteeing much, there are the Japanese ones with good performance, good price and the guarantee of Japanese work, and there are the American ones, with the best performance, the highest price and again, guarantees over guarantees. Choose wisely with regard to your budget. For example, a rule of thumb in 2012 would be that the cells shouldnt sell for more than $1.3 per watt. Buy a couple of cells you think would fit your solar panel systems budget and preferences, and move on to step #2.

My Thoughts Of The Whole Project

Overall, the project was a fun experience, and the total amount of money that I spent was around $400-$500, which includes the battery, charge controller, and deep cycle battery. So I saved a large portion by building my own solar system, since a commercial solar panel would have cost $400 on up for just the solar panel itself. If you have any questions or concerns, just visit GreenTechTown.com’s Forum and I or other members will try to answer them as quickly as we can. Tabbing Your Solar Cells

The next step, and possibly the most time consuming step, is tabbing your solar cells. You can buy pre-tabbed cells and this is recommended if you are not familiar with using a soldering iron although most solar cell suppliers will supply you with un-tabbed cells. It is not complicated once you have the correct technique but you may need to practice on one or two cells first as the tabbing wire is not easy to remove.

Cut the tabbing wire to a little over the length of one cell for the end tabs and double the length of each cell for the interconnecting tabs. Now begin soldering the tabbing wire to the solar cell, see the attached video. First draw a line with the flux pen down the length of the silver tab lines. Line the tabbing wire over the tab lines and then run the hot soldering iron down the length of the tab. Do not leave the soldering iron in one area for too long as it will overheat and damage the cell. There is no need to add solder to the wire as tabbing wire comes pre-soldered.

Calculating Your Power Needs

How much electricity do you want to generate with your solar array? Answering this question is the most important aspect of your DIY solar project.

It will allow you to figure out how many solar panels you need, and, if desired, the size of your battery pack for solar storage. Your energy usage will also determine the inverter and charge controllers you need as well as the thickness of wiring and sizes of fuses.

Every electrical appliance is important to include in this calculation to get the total output wattage. You need the sum-total of all the electrical power demands from all of your appliances, like refrigerator, oven, hot water heater, computers, TVs, washing machine, dryer, hair dryers, clocks, lighting, electric baseboards, space heaters, cellphones, tablets, etc.

Begin by looking for the power consumption rating labels on all of your appliances and devices.

Some of them may have the wattage displayed. In other cases, youll have to figure it out based on the amperage or voltage thats given. Use this formula to make the conversion:

Watts = Volts x Amps

There are many online calculators to use when adding it all up. Or, you can set up a table like this:

Note: To fill out the fourth column, multiply the output wattage by the number of hours of use per day . Then add up all the values in the fourth column to get the total wattage you use per day expressed in kilowatt-hours .

Create Your Own Solar System

This DIY plan is very detailed and provides clear instructions and photos to help those new to physical computing. While your solar cells should come with a directions sheet, some do not and you will need to research online to figure out how to properly set them up.

It can also take some time to get used to using a soldering iron and properly sealing connections. The panels made in this DIY project are small and lightweight enough to be moved, though theyre on the more fragile side.

Don’t Miss: Where Are Most Solar Panels Manufactured

Here Are Some Tips For Buying The Materials Required:

Solar cells: If you plan to buy solar cells online, be sure to evaluate their manufacturer and seller before buying. Some companies offer solar cells from China, which often have the best prices, although their quality may be questionable. Japanese ones typically have good price and performance, while American-made ones are considered to have the best performance yet can be pricey. Choose the right type for your budget and buy a couple of cells first, with enough voltage to charge your RV, trolling motor, or a few appliances in the house.

Tools: You will need a soldering iron and solder. You also need flux, solder paste, a wooden board, protective glasses, and a saw. To measure amperage and voltage, you should get a multimeter as well. And have your pencil and ruler handy, too.

How Big Solar Energy System Will You Need

In this part, we will discuss about the off grid solar power system for home use. Before designing, you should make a list of what home appliances you want to put in the pv system. They will be the loads to be powered.

And then to plan how many hours these loads will work respectively per day. Afterwards, you can get the total energy consumption and pv system capacity by calculation.

Watt Solar Panel Blueprint

This builder is actually an astronomer and offers some great insights for crafting an effective solar panel at home.

Buying factory rejected solar cells is a great way to cut down costs when building this, as they work just as well and only have a few cosmetic imperfections.

Simply build a wooden base, prepare and solder the cells, connect the strings, install half panels and the blocking diode, and then connect to your battery or power source. The only downside of this is that the designer often has to move this to be under direct sunlight a few times a day.

Are Mini Solar Power Plants Good For The Environment

Plug-in solar device for the balcony wall: in some cities, associations even help with assembly

Mini solar panel power systems lower electricity costs and help protect the climate. In fact, according to the German Association for Solar Energy, an additional 1,000 to 2,000 megawatts of electricity could be generated by mini solar power modules in Germany alone. That’s how much electricity a coal power plant produces, which is much more harmful for the environment.

Experts say they also have another advantage for the climate.

“Many people so far don’t really have any inkling of how much electricity they use, and don’t have any experience with solar energy and battery storage,” says Krisztina Andre, who works at Bündnis Bürgerenergie, a German association that promotes renewable energy.

According to Andre, people who have their own solar power modules are able to monitor their own energy use, learning how to save energy costs and doing something good for the planet at the same time.

“It’s also fun,” says David Breuer from Yuma, an online shop that sells plug-in solar devices.

Andre is convinced that another boost for home solar modules could come from the rise of e-cars, as their batteries can be used more generally as energy storage.

“Electric cars have large batteries, and their electricity could easily be put to good use elsewhere: for meeting your own energy needs at home, as well as in the neighborhood through the public grid.”

Purchase Additional Solar Equipment Like Inverters And Racking

If you do not trust yourself to build solar panels from scratch, you can purchase a solar panel kit which will come with more specific instructions to help secure your panels. Purchasing a solar kit might actually be more useful since it will include racking already.

Racking is tricky, you will need to determine which racking equipment works for your specific roof type or ground mount. There is almost an overwhelming amount of options of clamping and mounting equipment available if you look at wholesale distributor sites.

Solar Panel Rover Project

If youre willing to tackle a big project, this is the DIY plan for you.

Requiring a two-wheel trailer metal frame, four solar panels, 1,000-watt power inverter, and charge controller, youll spend a good amount of money on supplies.

However, this is still less expensive than buying a premade panel system. Youll first mount the solar panels, attach the controller and batteries, then theft-proof the rover.

This builder says this system is used to power many outdoor events on a school campus, so you could consider downsizing if this is just for your own home.

How To Reduce Your Solar Energy System Cost

Above we have seen the different factors and points which influence different costs and budgets of solar energy. Below we are going to look at how to reduce your solar energy system cost.

Use your appliances minimally daily

The less number of hours you use your appliances the huge the difference of your solar energy system and this means you will need small size of solar Components.

Use of solar-friendly appliances

Use of solar-friendly appliances such as LED bulbs and solar refrigerators lowers you system cost by a significant amount of dollars.

Use of direct current

Though it is not that common, using dc current eliminates the inverter budgets.Connecting your system to the grid. It can be worth to mention that this is the most common way to reduce your solar energy cost or pay back the cost of your system.

This is because you feed your energy to the utility grid rather than in the batteries. More so if you dont use all the energy you feed to the grid, the utility company pays you for the remaining energy. This is also regarded as the investment aspect of solar energy.

Is It Cheaper To Build Your Own Solar System

Make Your Own Solar System Model Kit

Ultimately, Is It Cheaper To Build Or Buy Solar Panels? It should be less expensive to install a DIY system than to have it installed. It may cost you more in the long run, however, if you build the panels yourself. It is possible that the materials will not be very efficient and may not last as long as they used to.
