How Many Solar Panels Do I Need For 50 Kwh Per Day

As weve already discussed, solar panels are subject to efficiency issues, weather, sun hours, and location, and so its almost impossible to give an exact answer. However, there are some rough calculations we can do to get a fairly accurate answer.

Lets assume youre using 200-watt panels, with around 4-hours of sun per day, youll be getting roughly 800-watt hours per day, per panel. This would mean youll need around 62, 200-watt panels to generate 50 kWh per day.

Using The Kill A Watt Meter

As an example, the average US household uses 900 kWh power per month. For 30 days per month we get 30 kWh per day, and for an average day you might get between 6 and 10 hours of effective sunlight. The answer you get is between 3 kW and 5 kW per hour. So this monthly average wattage is what your solar panel system should be equipped to generate.

The calculations done this way will not be accurate. There are other factors affecting the generation of solar energy. The daily production might fluctuate greatly on a daily basis.

You could calculate a solar energy system power consumption of an electronic appliance using a low cost plug in device, called Kill A Watt meter. Once you know how much power an appliance is consuming per day, it will help you to determine your power consumption. Use a solar power price calculator.

You can use this device to count watts in kilowatt/hours . This device is made up of a three-prong electrical plug-in, along with some buttons and a display monitor. Once you plug the monitor into the wall, you also plug any appliance into the monitor. The device tells you exactly how much is the electricity being used by the appliance, including situations when the appliance is just plugged in only without being turned on.

Here is a video to watch the working of kill a watt meter.

Future Of The Solar Power System

As solar energy systems become cheaper and more efficient, more people will see some economic value with incorporating them into residential projects.

With the integration of the solar power monitoring systems with the Internet, it will be easy to monitor solar power output in real time.

More solar power systems will upgrade over time to integrate with smart technology and selling household solar PV power that is in excess to need. Solar power accounts for around 35 percent of all new electrical power generated in the U.S.

To enhance their PV sales some installation companies are offering innovative financing solutions to people to help set up their solar panels system. These solutions use the financial return of the power savings to pay for the PV solar system capital cost.

A full solar system with batteries is not only a cleaner source of renewable energy but a correctly sized solar system is a good investment too.

Putting It All Together

How Much Solar Power Do I Need? How to Calculate Your ...

With those variables in mind, we can roughly estimate the number of solar panels for home that you’ll need. In this example, we’ll use the average annual energy consumption, solar panel wattage and hours of sunlight that we mentioned earlier.

Let’s say that your property receives four hours of sunshine each day, and you’re purchasing 325-watt solar panels. In that case, each panel can generate 1,300 watt-hours per day . Assuming that your energy usage is in line with the average of 29 kWh per day, you’d need 23 325-watt panels to create enough electricity for your home.

What Solar Panel Size Should I Choose Calculate Your Solar Panel Needs

Solar panel dimensions are critical if your roof is small or of an unusual shape. Why? These factors affect the usable area, so whatever you sacrifice in size, you’ll need to make up for in efficiency. It may seem confusing, so let’s go through the whole decision-making process step by step:

  • Begin by calculating your solar panel needs, the solar array output. This is when our solar panel calculator steps in. Alternatively, you can just use the formula:
  • solar array output = electricity consumption / ,

where the electricity consumption is yearly and expressed in kWh . Solar hours in a day depends strongly on your location.

  • You need to account for efficiency and how much you want to depend on solar power. In other words, how much of your electricity bill you’d like to offset. The equation is:
  • solar array size = solar array output * ,

where both bill offset and efficiency are percentages.

  • The tricky part begins now. You need to estimate your roof area. Exclude the bits you cannot place anything on or are normally in the shade since they won’t generate any power. This will give you an idea of the maximum solar panel dimensions.

  • There’s no size fits all solution here, and you’ll have to research your local options regarding solar panels. You’ve calculated your solar panel needs, so it’s time to check where you can get photovoltaic cells that are the closest to the ideal.

  • required panels = solar array size * 1000 / .

area occupied = required panels * panel width * panel length,

How Many Solar Panels Does It Take To Run A House Off Grid

Solar panels, solar battery charger, batteries and an inverter used in off-grid solar systems

As a general rule, you need the same amount of solar panels as for a grid-tied system, but with extra panels depending on how much autonomy you require.

Lets say you have a home that uses 30kWh per day and the irradiance in your location is the US average of 5.3 peak sun hours per day. A 5.7kW solar system would meet your needs in theory, ignoring PV system losses.

Most of your homes energy usage, maybe 75%, is used in daytime. You need to make sure that your battery bank is fully charge duing the day so that you have uninterrupted electrical supply through the night.

Also, what if you have several days of cloudy days with low solar output? In this case the energy storage battery bank would have to meet the shortfall in energy production.

I would add another 25% to the estimated solar system size required, in this case making the system size 7.5kW and a battery bank sized to supply the home for 48 hours with no solar generation.

The average US house running with off-grid solar would need 25 solar panelseach rated at 300 watts.

How Many Solar Panels Do You Need For Common Household Items

If you are considering solar energy for your home, you may also be asking how many panels are needed to power specific appliances. However, it is important to understand how solar generation works:

    • Solar systems deliver most of their energy production in the hours around noon
    • During the early morning and late in the afternoon, solar generation is much lower. This is because there is less sunlight reaching the panels
    • Households have the highest energy consumption in the evening and early morning

Since solar panels depend on sunlight, you cannot control their electricity production. Powering home appliances directly with panels is impractical and potentially dangerous, unless you use a solar battery to store energy. If you connect home appliances directly to the panels and inverter, a dark cloud passing over your home will shut off the power. At night, you would have to switch to the local power supply anyway.

The most practical solution is synchronizing solar systems with the local power supply, which lets them operate as a single power source. When solar generation cannot power your home appliances by itself, the rest of the energy comes from the grid. If your panels have surplus production, you can send it to grid to get a credit on the next electricity bill.

    Appliance

This table considers the most power-hungry appliances found in homes. Most small appliances and electronic devices have a very low consumption, which does not even match the production of one panel.

    Determine Your Energy Usage

Off Grid Solar Power – How to Calculate Your Needs

Check out your most recent power bill to see your monthly electricity consumption. In most cases, the total amount of electricity used will be shown at the bottom of the bill in kilowatt-hours .

Your yearly energy usage will give you the best estimate for how many solar panels you need, as energy usage fluctuates in different seasons .

Because monthly energy usage varies so much, it can be beneficial to dig up your monthly electric bills for the past year, add the electric usage together, and divide by 12.

But using just one utility bill to find your energy consumption is still enough for a ballpark estimate.

How Much Solar Power Do I Need

My advice on solar power system sizing has changed over the years due to the cost of solar panels continuing to reduce over time.

This video explains the system size providing the best bang for buck for the typical Australian household:

Spoiler alert if you dont feel like watching, my advice on system sizing is: if you have reasonable electricity consumption and a decent feed-in tariff, install as many solar panels as you can fit and afford.

This article digs a bit deeper into why my advice is to fill your roof rather than a specific size and shows how to use my nifty solar calculator to see what a solar system can do to your bills.

    But first some basics.

The size of a solar power system is described by total panel capacity, expressed in kiloWatts .

A Watt is a basic measure of electrical power, and the kilo means there are 1000 of them. i.e. 1 kW = 1000 Watts

    For example a system made up of 18 x 370W solar panels = a 6.6 kW system.

When buying a solar power system, its common for installers to quote on oversized systems.

The linked article goes into more detail, but in short you get huge bang for buck by putting on 33% more panels than an inverter is rated for.

This is why 6.6kW solar systems, using 5 kW inverters, are king in 2021 they represent a sizing sweet spot for what the typical home can fit on the roof. Theyre also usually the maximum size a Distributed Network Service Provider will allow on a single-phase home .

How Long Does It Take For Solar Panels To Pay For Themselves

Solar panel payback period varies according to your location, as the suns energy is stronger in some locations. It also depends on energy consumption and your utility prices.

The example below shows the payback period for an installation in Houston, Tx:

How long before solar pays for itself in Houston, Texas?

    • Location: Houston, Tx
    • Solar system power rating:5kW
    • Solar installation cost = $13700 26% tax credit = $10138
    • Peak-sun-hours in Houston = 1552/year

Column Descriptions For The Power Needs Table

Applicances/Loads – In this column put each thing that you want to power with your off-grid system.

Power – Put here how much powereach of the appliances you put in the first column uses while it’sturned on. For light bulbs it’s easy since the amount of power is written right on the light bulb .

Some items are listed in the table below. These may be wrong foryour appliance as things differ a lot but they’ll help if you’re stuck.

For a fridge it’s more difficult. The way I find out is to use awatt meter. If you’re not familiarwith these then click on the link in the previous sentence for a pageall about them. You plug your fridge, or whatever, into the watt meterand then plug the watt meter in the wall. The watt meter will tellyou over time how much power was used in kWh Leaveit like this for 48 hours At the end of that time, divide the power used by 48 and then multiply by 1000.That will give you the average power used per hour which is what’s needed for column. For example:

    2.784 kWh / 48 hours = 0.058 kW 0.058 kW x 1000 = 58 watts

Some things demand a lot of power briefly when you first turn themon, known as a surge, and then use less power after that. For this table ignore the surge. We’re concerned only with the normal power usage once it’s up and running.

Hours used in a day – Put how manyhours each appliance is used per day.

Watt-hours per week x x – Multiply each value in columns , and together and put theresult here.

How Big Of A Solar Panel Do I Need

Lots of people tell you how to figure out how much solar ...

If you are planning to buy solar panels for your home then the next question that might come into your mind is how big of a solar panel do I need for my home? Well, before you decide to buy any solar cells, there are certain things that you should know about solar cells.

Solar panels are considered to be very efficient and can power your entire house with just one or two cells. However, even if you are using one of the standard sizes of a solar panel in a small home, there are many solar-powered systems that can still power your entire home.

The other thing that you need to know when buying solar panels for your home is that if you want it to be an excellent investment, you need to get the best quality panel.

Since solar panels are pretty expensive nowadays, it is better to get the best quality panel in order to save money in the long run. However, even if you are buying the best quality solar panel for your home, you still need to know how to install a solar panel properly.

You have to learn how to take care of them in order to make sure that you get the maximum output from your solar panels. If you know how to install solar panels properly, you can save more money from using this source of alternative energy.

Don’t Miss: Is Solar Really Worth It

How Many Hours Of Sunlight Can You Expect In Your Area

The peak sunlight hours for your particular location will have a direct impact on the energy you can expect your home solar system to produce. For example, if you live in Phoenix you can expect to have a greater number of peak sunlight hours than if you lived in Seattle. That doesnt mean a Seattle homeowner cant go solar it just means the homeowner would need more panels.

The Renewable Resource Data Center provides sunlight information by state and for major cities.

Now multiply your hourly usage by 1,000 to convert your hourly power generation need to watts. Divide your average hourly wattage requirement by the number of daily peak sunlight hours for your area. This gives you the amount of energy your panels need to produce every hour. So the average U.S. home in an area that gets five peak sunlight hours per day would need 6,000 watts.

The End Result For Step 1

You now have what you need to move on to sizing the rest of your system, such as your batteries and your solar panels. Record theresult from Part C above, i.e. the Wh/day , and the Highest power used at one time which you got as a total at the bottom left of the above table, and move on to the next steps by clickingon the icons at the top or bottom of this page.
