Tesla Energy Product Roll

Shortly after the acquisition announcement, Tesla announced that it would be building a new version of its Powerwall battery energy storage device and introduced the Tesla Solar Roof, a solar shingle product. Elon Musk presented the products using the homes on Colonial Street set on the Universal Studios backlot. The presentation was intended to gain investor support for the acquisition. It would later be reported that these roof tiles were not “fully working.” Members of the anti-Tesla group TSLAQ have cited Musk’s solar roof tile reveal as a major point of contention and an impetus for organizing.

The Solar Roof was to be made at the Giga New York factory, which opened in late August 2017 and would be operated as a joint venture with Panasonic. The factory was not able to start producing the shingles in volume until March 2020 and Panasonic left the joint venture in early 2020, before it exited the solar business entirely in January 2021.

In mid-2017, several of the former SolarCity executives left the company. Chief policy officer John Wellinghoff departed in April 2017, co-founder Lyndon Rive left in June 2017, followed by his brother Peter shortly thereafter.

How Does Tesla Design My System

After your home assessment has been completed and your utility bill has been submitted, we use a combination of high-resolution aerial and satellite imagery to design your solar system. Our designers will place the solar panels for highest production and arrange them for best aesthetics based on the available roof space. To help your system achieve optimum solar production, we consider several sizing and design factors. We avoid placing solar panels near obstructions, such as trees or other structures that may block exposure to the sun.

Tesla Solar Roof Availability: Who Can Buy

At the moment, the Tesla Solar Roof is being installed in various locations across the United States.

At the October 2019 unveiling, Tesla’s senior director of energy operations Kunal Girota explained that Tesla is installing retrofit solar panels in 25 states, and it will be offering the roof in all of those states. The goal, however, is to expand across the country with both the company’s internal teams and third parties.

At the time of writing, Tesla’s website accepts orders for its retrofit solar panels in 24 locations: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusets, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington.

The Tesla Solar Roof section of the website accepts orders for all 50 states bar Minnesota. Inverse has reached out to Tesla for more information.

As for international buyers, there may be some good news on that front. Musk stated on Twitter in February 2020 that he was “looking forward to international expansion later this year.”

Tesla Solar Roof Cost

How Long Does A Solar Panel Installation Take?

The Tesla Solar Roof also undercuts the cost of buying a roof and panels separately. Tesla says a 10-kilowatt roof in California will cost around $33,950, equating to $5.60 per square foot or $2.11 per watt. That, Tesla claims, is cheaper than spending $54,647 on a premium roof and retrofit solar panels .

Tesla Solar Roof tiles were first announced in October 2016, but except for a small number of installations in the spring of 2018 they never seemed to materialize in bulk. Reports at the time suggest installations measured in just the 10s of houses. But Tesla partnered with a Chinese supplier for the third-generation tiles, and previous supplier Panasonic ended its agreement to produce the tiles this week.

As Tesla starts to raise the roof, here’s how to get the roof installed.

How Long Do Tesla Solar Panels Last

Solar panels usually last between 25-30 years.

Tesla provides warranty coverage on both the workmanship and performance of its solar panels and Solar Roof. You can expect a 10-year comprehensive cover and a 25-year panel performance warranty though the panels might last a little longer than this, just at a less efficient rate.

Will The Final Price Change After I Place My Order

Tesla will use high-resolution imagery to remotely design your system after you place your order and complete your home assessment. During the design process, Tesla will confirm the dimensions of your roof and any local permitting and utility requirements for the size of your system. Note that this is still a construction project and we may identify pre-construction costs, such as a main panel upgrade, during this design process or when we arrive at your home. If any changes are required to your original order, Tesla will notify you and provide an updated Price Sheet in your Tesla Account for you to review and sign.

Tesla Solar Roof: How Installation Works

Alex Guichet, a games developer based in Cupertino, gave perhaps the most detailed rundown of the installation process for a third-generation Solar Roof. On October 23, 2019, two days before the new product was announced, Guichet signed a contract with Tesla to install the new tiles before they were announced.

Nearly three weeks later on November 11, Tesla confirmed that the installation permit had been secured. Two days later a subcontractor removed their original roof over the space of two hours. Tesla delivered the materials on November 15, and the company’s roofing crew completed work on November 22. This included delays from rain and the weekend.

On December 2, the team started wiring up the electricals, a process completed two days later and fully tested a further three days later. It passed local government inspections on the 11th, and the following month Guichet received permission to start operating from the power company.

Tesla Solar Roof Controversy: Whats Next For The Solar Roof In 2021

Tesla Solar Panels & Powerwall 2 Installation Complete Overview

The Tesla Solar Roof project has faced delays, lawsuits, and criticism since announced in 2016. As of 2021, however, many of those issues have started to smooth out, and Teslas Solar Roof could face a brighter future.

Elon Musk announced the Solar Roof all the way back in 2016, when the company was in the process of acquiring SolarCity. Musk was the chairman and largest shareholder for SolarCity, and his cousins effectively ran the company. Some criticized the deal for being rife with conflicts. Despite the criticism, the SolarCity board agreed to a $2 billion buyout from Elon Musk.

Since 2016, Musk has fired executives and involved himself personally with the project. According to Bloombergs Dana Hull, Musk sees the Power Roof as essential to his vision of becoming more than just a car company.

Today, Tesla continues to install Solar Roofs across the United States. However, the company has faced criticisms for its slow rollout.

In 2019, Musk claimed Tesla would launch a new Solar Roof that would be cheaper, faster, and easier to install. He wanted Tesla to install 1,000 Solar Roofs per week, with sales continuing to grow like kelp on steroids over the coming months and years.

Two years later, Tesla is purportedly struggling to hit 200 installations a week. Tesla has also faced criticism for hiking the price of the Solar Roof after customers are already under contract.

Tesla Solar Roof Versus Hail

If youre spending tens of thousands of dollars on a roof, then you need that roof to withstand hail and other physical damage. So how does the Tesla Solar Roof fare against hail?

Part of the reason Tesla delayed the rollout of the Solar Roof was to make the system as strong as possible. The shingles are called solarglass because the top layer is made from glass. It sounds like glass shingles would do very poorly against hail, branches, and other physical damage to your roof. However, thats not the case.

Tesla claims their Solar Roof is more than three times stronger than standard roofing tiles. The company has engineered the solarglass for all-weather protection. Plus, the tiles are backed by a 25-year warranty.

Of course, Tesla can make all of the claims it wants but it doesnt matter if the roof cannot survive a real hailstorm. In July 2021, Good Faith Energy showing how the Tesla Solar Roof fared against baseball-sized hail.

Texas experienced several serious hailstorms at the end of April that set new records in the state. One homeowner in Wichita Falls, Texas with a Tesla Solar Roof recorded the aftermath. Large hailstorms fell on the roof for 20 to 30 minutes. Most of the hailstones were the size of golf balls, but there were several hailstorms the size of baseballs.

How Long Does It Take To Install Tesla Solar Panels

This question is top-of-mind for many homeowners interested in Teslas new product. Unfortunately, the answer probably wont satisfy most.Technically, with most accredited solar companies, the installation of any solar array should only take one day to complete.

The issue with Tesla solar products? Historically, Tesla has struggled with supply, creating backlogs and waitlists for interested consumers. This causes would-be customers to wait anywhere from a couple weeks to a few months to just get the products.

While Tesla leadership states that their supply chain issues have since been resolved, customers tell a different story.

While we cannot guarantee that you will see long wait times for the new solar panels, we can offer the historical context. If you absolutely want to install Tesla solar products, you will most likely have to wait for them to become available first.

Tesla Solar Roof Estimate

Rather than directly publishing rates, Tesla provides a Solar Roof calculator on their website that estimates the cost of installing a solar roof on your home. The calculator is based on your current electricity usage and the size of your home, among other factors. We ran three basic estimates to give you an idea of the price differences. Each estimate includes a roof replacement, but does not factor in any incentives.

FYI: All estimates were run on July 13, 2021.

Tesla changes their prices depending on a number of factors, including those listed below.

Does Tesla Install On Flat Roof Buildings

Does Tesla Install Solar Roofs in NYC?

Unfortunately for homeowners with flat roofs, Teslas solar roof will not be an option. The minimum roof pitch eligible for a solar roof installation is 3:12 . This puts the Tesla solar roof at a disadvantage considering standard solar panels can work on all roof types. The most effective solar option on flat roofs is either a tilt rack system or a solar canopy.

Solar production aside, we do not recommend solar tiles for flat roofs due to waterproofing issues.

BSWs solar canopy elevates solar arrays 9 feet above the roof surface, obstructions, fire paths, shade & amenities. This strategy maximizes solar performance on otherwise unworkable or flat roofs.

Solar Roof Durability Vs Solar Panel Durability

Tesla is extremely confident in the durability of its solar roof. Elon Musk has stated that the Tesla Solar Roof has an infinity warranty or for the lifetime of your home, whichever comes first. While the durability of the new solar tiles has not been successfully field testing, there are videos online of the Tesla Solar team launching hail and other heavy objects at the solar tiles to show their durability. Based on a video recorded in a Tesla owned factory, it seems the solar tiles are stronger than a tempered-glass solar panel.

Standard solar panels, however, are usually warrantied by the manufacturer for 25 years and the panels typically will last longer than the warranty. The expected lifetime of solar panels has also been field tested, unlike the solar roof.

The biggest question here is what is going to happen when solar tiles start degrading and losing their efficiency? When solar panels need to be replaced or corrected it is a pretty simple replacement. But what happens when there are solar tile problems? How much of the roof is going to have to be replaced? It seems that making any corrections to a Tesla Solar Roof is going to be very expensive and labor-intensive.

How Does The Tesla Solar Roof Work

Tesla has an in-house team that designs, installs, and powers on each Solar Roof. You order the Solar Roof through Tesla, and the professionals work with you to create your Solar Roof.

Heres how the Solar Roof installation process works for most homeowners:

Step 1) Design: Tesla uses aerial imagery and 3D modeling to determine the custom design of your Solar Roof.

Step 2) Installation: Teslas integrated design allows for quick tile and Powerwall installation, giving you an all-in-one solar and storage system.

Step 3) Power On: Tesla completes the final cleanup, then activates your system.

The system is powered by the Tesla Solar Inverter, which is designed to make the system as safe and reliable as possible. The Tesla Solar Inverter has built-in connectivity, and Tesla continues to launch over-the-air updates to make the hardware as intelligent as possible. The goal is to generate the maximum amount of energy possible for your Solar Roof even if you have intermittent sunlight and complicated angles.

Once your Solar Roof is installed, you monitor the roof using the Tesla app. The app lets you monitor your energy production in real-time. You can also control your system from anywhere. The Tesla app lets you set up instant alerts and remotely access multiple aspects of your Solar roof.
