What Is The Life Expectancy Of A Solar Panel

Most Solar Panels End Up In Landfill

What is the life expectancy of a solar power system?

Australia has one of the highest uptakes of rooftop solar in the world, with almost 3 million homes now using solar panel power.

The surge for solar began around 2010, and has risen quickly and sharply.

The lifespan of a solar panel can be anywhere from 10 to 25 years, so that means the number of panels nearing the end of their lives is about to grow exponentially.

Currently, almost all broken or expired solar panels go into landfill and experts have been warning for some time that more than 100,000 tonnes of modules will end up there by 2035.

Clive Fleming runs one of only a few solar panel recycling plants in Australia, Reclaim PV in Adelaide.

We operate Australia-wide and we do our services through collection, whether its a drop-off point or we can pick it up from any site around Australia, Mr Fleming said.

The service is open to manufacturers, installers, retailers, solar farm operators and homeowners, and the cost to recycle one solar panel is roughly $10 plus freight to South Australia.

Demand is small-scale but strong, and coming mostly from manufacturers doing warranty claims and retailers who are helping an increasing number of households to upgrade their decade-old systems.

Homeowners do come about and pay for their panels to be recycled as well, Mr Fleming said.

The biggest challenge is developing the network and making sure people know theres actually a choice available to them other than landfill.

What Is The Average Solar Panel Lifespan

If you dont know the average solar panel lifespan, you may be wondering if solar panels are worth it. Normally, solar panels are warrantied for about 25 to 30 years, but they can continue to produce energy at a high capacity after this point. PV panels at this age typically produce electricity at 80 percent of their initial capacity or less. In many instances, this is sufficient, but for others, the panels may no longer be economically viable and may have to be replaced with newer panels that can produce more energy at higher efficiencies.

What Causes Degradation In Solar Panels

There are many different factors that contribute to solar panel degradation, but many of them focus on something thats pretty hard to control – the weather.

One common way microcracks form is through thermal cycling. When its warm, just about everything expands. When its cold, things contract. Solar panels arent immune to this, and its that constant back and forth that put them under strain and create those little cracks.

Similarly, strong winds can cause flexing of the panels – also known as a dynamic mechanical load. But as long as your solar system is installed by experts and youre using panels of good quality, this shouldnt be a major contributor to degradation. Extreme cold and hot weather, humidity, and snow and ice also slowly contribute to solar panel degradation, as do solar system components with different voltage potentials.

Another question we get is does sunlight cause degradation? – the very thing that makes solar panels tick! Thankfully, most solar panel manufacturers create panels with UV blockers that protect the panels from most damage, but yes – the sun itself does contribute to degradation.

In fact, your panels degrade at one of the highest rates just hours after installation when theyre first exposed to the sun and its UV rays. This is known as light-induced degradation . Your panels can degrade 1 to 3% in this short amount of time, but after that, degradation slows way down.

Do Solar Panels Go Bad

There is technically no expiration date on solar panels. However, over time, they naturally tend to become less efficient at producing energy.

Some panels can also break due to physical damage from extreme weather conditions. For example, when there is extreme cold, reoccurring hail storms or physical damage caused by falling debris, solar panels can develop microcracks that will eventually break the entire panel.

Quickly occurring extreme contrasts in temperature can also weaken solar panels because the materials that make them, like solar cells and metals, will contract and expand. Solar panels are also subject to water damage which could occur due to the seal that protects the panels from water degrading.

The good news is, a standard 25-year warranty should cover all weather damage to solar panels. Each solar panel manufacturer offers different warranty guarantees, so be sure to read the fine print to make sure your panels are covered under any condition.

However, an NREL study has shown that for solar panels replaced since 2000, only about 5 panels out of 10,000 fail annually.

Do Solar Panels Degrade Over Time

Solar energy installation, panel: Life expectancy solar panels

As with most technologies, solar panels will naturally produce less energy over time. This reduced power output is called the degradation rate. The median solar panel degradation rate is about 0.5%, which simply means that a solar panels energy production will decrease at a rate of 0.5% per year.3 After 20 years, your panels should still be working at about 90% of its original output.

How Manufacturers Calculate The Loss Of Efficiency

As stated earlier, a crystalline solar panel may last up to 25 years. But how the manufacturers calculate the loss of efficiency during this period? In fact, companies producing these solar panels calculate .8% of efficiency loss per year.

After calculating the degradation or loss of performance at this rate, the operating capacity of a solar panel will reduce to almost 80% after 25 years. This is the efficiency standard that all the solar panels must hit.

Why Do Solar Panels Degrade

When exposed to extreme climates, a crystalline silicon solar panel may experience a high rate of degradation.

For instance, a panel subjected to heavy snow loads, winds, and heat does lose its structural integrity and efficiency. On the contrary, panels installed in a favorable climate will show a minimum rate of degradation.

Given below are some of the other factors that result in the degradation of a solar panel.

Solar Panel Life Expectancy Vs Production Lifespan

How Long Do Solar Panels Last?

When considering how long solar panels last, its important to distinguish between a solar panels production lifespan and the life expectancy of the solar panel itself.

A solar panels life expectancy is how long the solar panel will continue to produce power. Solar panel production lifespan is how long a solar panel will produce a certain amount of its original power output.

The standard production lifespan of a solar panel is about 25 to 30 years. Solar panel manufacturers typically warranty their solar panels for 25 years. These warranties guarantee that your solar panels will produce a certain percentage of their original power production, generally 80% or more, after the 25-year warranty period has passed.

For example, a 350 Watt solar panel would be guaranteed to produce at least 280 Watts at the end of the 25-year warranty period.

Solar panel manufacturers also typically offer equipment warranties that cover any damages to the solar panels themselves, such as any manufacturing defects. These warranties help ensure your solar panels will remain in service and continue to justify your investment.

What Is A Solar Panel Degradation Rate

Solar panel systems will show a reduced ability to absorb sunlight and convert it into solar energy over their lifetime. However, it takes many years for this slow loss of efficiency to occur. Factors that cause this include hot weather as well as the natural reduction in chemical potency of the panels, also known as the degradation rate.

A solar panel with a lower degradation rate will produce more energy over its lifetime. Essentially, the lower the degradation rate, the better the solar panel. Solar panel degradation rates depend on the brand as well. As youd expect, higher-quality panels will have a lower degradation rate than lower-quality panels.

The average solar panel loses 0.8% of its output each year according to a National Renewable Energy Laboratory study. However, premium manufacturers like SunPower offer panels with degradation rates as low as 0.3%, meaning their panels will last much longer compared to the majority of other manufacturers. This makes degradation rate a vital aspect to consider when comparing solar panels during your pre-purchase research process.

Do Solar Panels Lose Effectiveness Over Time

According to a 2012 study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory , the average rate of degradation of panels is between 0.5% to 0.8% per year. Degradation rate is the rate at which solar panels lose efficiency over time. A panel with a degradation rate of 1% per year will be 10% less efficient after 10 years.

How long do solar panels last before they need to be replaced? You can count on most photovoltaic solar panels to last 25 years before they start to visibly degrade. This may interest you : What is solar energy responsible?. Most solar panel companies will provide a standard 25-year warranty on the life expectancy of solar panels.

Can Solar Panels Be Damaged By Heat

It may seem counterintuitive, but the efficiency of the solar panel is negatively affected by temperature increases. PV modules are tested at a temperature of 25 degrees C about 77 degrees F., and depending on their installed location, heat can reduce output efficiency by 10-25%.

How hot is too hot for solar panels?

Home solar panels are tested at 25°C and therefore the solar panel temperature usually ranges between 15°C and 35°C, during which time the solar cells will produce at maximum efficiency. However, solar panels can reach temperatures of up to 65°C , at which point the efficiency of the solar cell will suffer.

Does high heat damage solar panels?

Homeowners can be confident that their solar panels will be able to withstand even the worst weather conditions without breaking down. While heat and moisture can do a lot to reduce the efficiency of a solar panel system, it is virtually impossible for a solar panel to be damaged by heat and moisture alone.

Solar Panels And Their Recycling Process

The life span on a solar panel

After discussing the benefits and overall lifespan of solar panels, itâs time to explain the process of solar panel disposal. Like any other product, solar panels can also undergo a recycling process.

The crystalline module includes primary materials like glass, plastic, and aluminum. It is possible to recycle all these three materials by using the normal recycling process.

However, the process involved during the separation of different materials is quite difficult and tedious.

For this purpose, recyclers use advanced machinery. The following are the steps that recycling companies follow to remove silicon from the module.

  • First, the aluminum frame gets separated from the module
  • Then glass and conveyer belt is removed carefully
  • Thermal processing helps to separate the PV cells from the plastic components
  • Next, the process of separating the silicon wafers starts
  • In the end, recyclers turn the reclaimed silicon into reusable slabs

The solar recycling market is maturing slowly. The basic reason behind the slow growth relates to the fact that there is only a limited amount of recyclable solar panels. However, these recycling units are developing infrastructures to improve their capacity.

Solar Misconceptions: The Life Expectancy of a Solar System

Faulty inverters cause system failures much more often than the panels themselves. A typical solar inverter has a lifespan of 10-15 years, with 5-10 years of warranty. This means that youll need to replace the inverter much sooner than your panels. These days, many homeowners choose microinverters, because they can last for 25 years that’s almost as long as quality panels.

The Key Factor In Making Solar Panels Last: Panel Degradation Rate

A 2012 study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory found that, on average, solar panel output falls by 0.8 percent each year. This rate of decline is called solar panel degradation rate. Though this rate of decline metric will vary depending on which panel brand you buy, premium manufacturers like SunPower offer degradation rates as low as 0.3%. Solar panel degradation rates are constantly improving as solar panel technology gets better over the years, and degradation rates below 1% are common throughout the industry. In the years since this 2012 study was conducted, more efficient technologies have been developed and many newer panels have just a 0.5 percent yearly decline in energy output .

What does panel degradation rate mean exactly? For the above example, a 0.8% degradation rate means that in year two, your panels will operate at 99.2 percent of their original output by the end of their 25-year useful lifespan, they will still be operating at 82.5%.A slightly more durable panel with a degradation rate of 0.5% will likely produce around 87.5% as much electricity as it did when it was first installed. To determine the projected output of your solar panels after a certain number of years, you can simply multiply the degradation rate by the number of years you are interested in and subtract that number from 100%.

What Is The Expected Lifespan Of A Solar Power System

The key components susceptible to failure are the solar panels and inverter. However, high quality products tend to have long lifecycles which are reflected in the long warranties available, particularly for solar panels.

A solar panel is relatively a simple device with no moving parts. Solar panels typically have 25 year output warranty and depending on the quality of the panel can be expected to last beyond this. Also solar panels which are exposed to wind, fluctuating temperatures and weather do deteriorate and each year produce a little less electricity. Cheaper panels, with less UV stabilized backing sheets, cheaper sealants and framing can deteriorate faster and more rapidly.

LGs warranties generally predict an average of 0.6% loss of power each year after the 1st year and thus, at the end of the 25 year output warranty period the solar panel may have lost up to 16.4% of its initial power rating. This means is where a high efficiency LG solar panel would produce 315 watts, the same panel in 25 years might only produce 261-269 Watts. In reality, for most less productive quality panels, they may start at 250-260 watts and then degrade to 200 watts per panel after 25 years. For cheaper panels coming out of China the rate of degradation is much quicker taking 5 years to lose 20%+ of their output capacity. There are cheap panels with rates of complete failure after just 12 months. See Cheap Shoddy Solar Panels
