What Is The Average Life Expectancy Of Solar Panels

Do Solar Panels Ever Wear Out

What is the life expectancy of a solar power system?

On average, solar panels degrade about 1% in efficiency each year. Their lifespan can be affected by poor installation, such as a faulty racking system or exposed wires, or physical damage from inclement weather. Solar panel life spans can also vary depending on the type, how regularly the panels receive inspection and maintenance, how they were installed, and your environment. You can tell solar panels are on the decline when they begin to produce less light and electricity.

Average Lifespan Of Solar Panels

The average lifespan of solar panels is one of the most common questions that many people installing the systems have to ask. As homeowners and business owners are progressively changing over to the idea of solar power it is important to determine the average lifespan of a solar cell. Solar panels often last for around 25 years and this doesnt mean that the panels on your roof will stop producing electricity, rather that after this point the energy production from the solar cell may start to decrease depending on the solar power manufacturers guarantee. Specific maintenance may be required in order to prevent degradation from happening early on and this can affect the overall lifespan of your solar system as well as limit efficiency and performance.

Why a Standard Warranty is So Important

Solar Panels and Their Degradation

There are many reasons why solar panels can degrade faster than you would expect. A solar panel thats exposed to extreme changes in climate may experience ongoing and heavy soiling. A solar panel thats installed improperly may also have the same type of higher rate of degradation. Based on the superiority of the technology thats used in the manufacturers that are producing solar panels, you can get access to improvements for your solar installation.

How Long Do Solar Panels Last Solar Panel Lifespan Explained

One of the most common questions we hear from homeowners considering a solar panel installation is how long do solar panels last? Its hard to understand the upfront cost of going solar without knowing how long you can expect your rooftop panels to produce ample energy. Your solar panels will be able to offset your electricity use for decades, but it is also important to understand industry projections and degradation rates.

Should You Replace Your Solar Panels After 25 Years

What is life expectancy of Solar Panels?

Solar panel systems will keep producing electricity even after the 25-year warranty period if they are well maintained. However, it is important to note that they wont be as efficient at energy production versus when they were first installed.

So, you do not need to replace your panels if:

  • Your solar panels produce enough energy for your electricity needs
  • If none of your panels are broken

But you do need to replace your panels if:

  • Your solar panels produce too little electricity to the point where they no longer adequately power your home
  • Your system was not properly maintained and has many broken panels

Working with a reputable installer will go a long way in making sure that your solar panels are high quality and will be covered under a warranty. Ultimately, it is rare for solar panels to go bad, and you should have no issue relying on your solar panels for 25+ years.

How much can you save with solar?
  • Most solar panels last 25+ years with an average annual degradation rate of .50%.
  • Solar panels do not go bad and very rarely are they faulty or break.
  • Solar inverters and solar batteries will need replacing within the 25+ year solar panel lifespan.
  • Properly maintaining your solar panels will help ensure they last longer.

Most Solar Panels End Up In Landfill

Australia has one of the highest uptakes of rooftop solar in the world, with almost 3 million homes now using solar panel power.

The surge for solar began around 2010, and has risen quickly and sharply.

The lifespan of a solar panel can be anywhere from 10 to 25 years, so that means the number of panels nearing the end of their lives is about to grow exponentially.

Currently, almost all broken or expired solar panels go into landfill and experts have been warning for some time that more than 100,000 tonnes of modules will end up there by 2035.

Clive Fleming runs one of only a few solar panel recycling plants in Australia, Reclaim PV in Adelaide.

“We operate Australia-wide and we do our services through collection, whether it’s a drop-off point or we can pick it up from any site around Australia,” Mr Fleming said.

The service is open to manufacturers, installers, retailers, solar farm operators and homeowners, and the cost to recycle one solar panel is roughly $10 plus freight to South Australia.

Demand is small-scale but strong, and coming mostly from manufacturers doing warranty claims and retailers who are helping an increasing number of households to upgrade their decade-old systems.

“Homeowners do come about and pay for their panels to be recycled as well,” Mr Fleming said.

“The biggest challenge is developing the network and making sure people know there’s actually a choice available to them other than landfill.”

How Long Do Solar Panels Actually Last

Solar panels offer homeowners a great way to reduce their carbon footprint. Luckily, the lifespan of solar panels will allow you to produce energy for many years, providing a great return on investment.

You can count on most photovoltaic solar panels to last 25 years before they begin to noticeably degrade. Most solar panel companies will provide a standard 25-year warranty for the expected life expectancy of the solar panels. After 25 years, your solar panels wont necessarily need to be replaced however, their ability to absorb sunlight will be reduced.

In this blog, well explain how long solar panels last, review solar panel degradation rates, and ways to make sure your solar panels last as long as possible.

Outside Factors Causing Degradation

Soiling is the most common factor, which affects the lifespan of a solar panel. Tiny dirt particles start to accumulate over the surface of a solar panel, reducing the amount of sunlight received by PV cells. Research has shown that a solar panel may loss 1% of its efficiency due to the loss of solar radiation.

Moreover, these panels are more likely to lose their power due to soiling when installing on the flat surface. Although it is quite easy to install solar panels on flat roofs, this results in the accumulation of more dust over the panels.

Weather also plays its role during degradation of panels, which is some cases turn out to be catastrophic.

A windstorm has the potential to damage your solar panel. After breaking from the trees, the branches may fall on the panels and trigger the degradation process. Hence, it is essential to install solar panels at a considerable distance from trees.

In addition, birds also pose a threat to the structural integrity of a solar panel. They prefer the dry area below the panel for making their nests. They even drop different materials over the glass, which inhibits the panelâs efficiency to a great extent.

Equipment Warranty And Performance Warranty

Life Expectancy Of A Solar System | How Long Do Solar Panels Last?

The average 25-year lifespan of a solar panel aligns with the typical warranty terms that many solar panel manufacturers offer. There are two types of solar panel warranties, and warranty terms can provide you with additional information about the expected life of a solar panel.

The first is an equipment warranty, which guarantees the panel against manufacturing defects. For example, an equipment warranty might guarantee that the panels wont fail for 10 or 12 years.

The second is a performance warranty, which guarantees that your panels will produce at least a minimum amount of electricity over a specific period of time. For example, a performance warranty might guarantee that your panels will produce at least 90% of their maximum production for the first 10 years, and then at least 80% of their maximum production for the next 15 years, for a total performance warranty period of 25 years.

Higher efficiency panels may also come with a better performance warranty, guaranteeing that they maintain that increased efficiency over time.

Do Solar Panels Need A Lot Of Maintenance

No, solar panels dont need a lot of maintenance. You should, however, have them periodically checked by your solar provider. Just one inspection can discover problems such as mechanical or electrical faults. Dirt and leaves make your panels less efficient, so you also need to wash them off from time to time.

What Is Solar Panel Degradation

The life span on a solar panel

All solar panels slowly degrade over time, which means theyre producing less electricity from the same amount of sunlight. How and why does this happen? A variety of external factors wear down on the panels and have a negative impact on their ability to produce electricity.

One way solar panel degradation happens is through microcracks that form in the silicon of the solar cells. These small cracks cause electrical connections to deteriorate, meaning there are fewer paths for those electrons from the sun to take, and thus less energy goes to your inverter and into your home, business, or farm. Other issues are junction box adhesion failures and discoloration.

Because there are a variety of ways panels can degrade, caused by a variety of factors, its a difficult problem to solve. Solar panel manufacturers are constantly evolving and coming up with ways to reduce that degradation rate so your panels can keep up their power output. But in the meantime, your panels are guaranteed to degrade at or below a specific rate, so you can rest assured your investment is a safe one.

And if your system is installed by Paradise Energy Solutions, youll get our Triple Ten Guarantee to make that investment even safer. It adds 10 years of guaranteed solar production, 10 years of system monitoring, and a 10-year workmanship warranty.

Prolonging Pv Module Life By Improving Inverter Maintenance And Manufacturing

Module Behavior, Apr 1, 2009 12:00 PM, By Beck Ireland, Staff WriteR- Prolonging PV module life by improving inverter maintenance and manufacturing

  • “In comparison to the decades-long warranty for the cells, mean time to first failure for inverters is estimated to be between five and 10 years .”- Reasons inverters fail in the article
  • “Luckily, there are maintenance procedures that can extend the life span of the inverters. Electricity performs better under cool conditions, Haney says. By cleaning off the heat sinks, you allow it to run cooler, which is more efficient. “
  • An issue that energy output of PV drops below that required by the inverter and it muct be changed
  • “The inverter accounts for 10% to 20% of the initial system cost, according to a report from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory , Golden, Colo., in conjunction with Navigant Consulting, Inc. , Burlington, Mass. However, because inverters generally need to be replaced every 5 to 10 years, they result in investment in a new inverter three to five times over the life of a PV system. “

What Are Your Options

There are two main types of batteries available for energy storage: lead-acid and lithium-ion. Lead-acid batteries are far cheaper than lithium, but dont last nearly as long. On the flip side, lithium batteries can cost an arm and a leg, but can last 8x to 12x longer than lead-acid, so youve got more time to recoup your initial investment.

Battery technology, though, isnt the only thing that affects solar batteries lifespan. Temperature, maintenance, and how deeply you discharge your batteries all play a serious role in their lifespan either keeping them going as long as possible, or helping them conk out after just a few years.

Lets take a look at the estimated lifespan of the most common battery types for solar backup and some tips to help you lengthen that battery life as long as possible.

Solar Panel Preventative Maintenance

While solar panels dont need constant maintenance, some actions increase production. Cleaning solar panels and decreasing snow build-up help solar panels produce more throughout the year.

Cleaning Solar Panels

Cleaning solar panels helps especially in areas that dont have regular rainstorms. When solar arrays dont have build-up, it increases the amount of sunlight that hits the solar cells, which increases production and system efficiency.

Solar Panels and Snow

Areas that have seasons of intense snowfall can have snow bury solar panels, meaning the solar panels dont see the sun unless someone removes the snow.

Regularly Get Your Panels Checked And Maintained

How Long Do Solar Panel Systems Last? (Warranty Timelines)

Broken glass, cracked panels, and loose connections are the top three issues that you can have with your panels over the years. Electrical faults are more difficult to discover, but if you suspect something is wrong with your solar system, have the company check your power output. If you see a large difference from the same month in previous years, you might be dealing with an electrical issue.

Keep Your Panels Clear Of Debris And Other Damaging Materials

During installation, the solar company youve chosen to work with will ensure that there are no trees that could drop branches on your panels. Even still, you can do your part in extending the lifespan of your solar panels by keeping them clean and free of debris, leaves, snow and more. However, its best to have a professional analyze the energy production of your system including individual panels if you use microinverters to identify potential damage over time.

If you notice any damage or debris on your panels but are unable to safely access them, its best to with the proper equipment and expertise to assist you.

Why Do Solar Panels Degrade

When exposed to extreme climates, a crystalline silicon solar panel may experience a high rate of degradation.

For instance, a panel subjected to heavy snow loads, winds, and heat does lose its structural integrity and efficiency. On the contrary, panels installed in a favorable climate will show a minimum rate of degradation.

Given below are some of the other factors that result in the degradation of a solar panel.

Stat Faqs Part : Lifetime Of Pv Panels

How Long Do Solar Panels Really Last?

The Solar Technical Assistance Team receives many interesting and broadly applicable questions from state and local governments. The STAT FAQs blog series will highlight pertinent information as it relates to questions STAT receives. The focus of Part 2 in the series is the productive lifetime and degradation rate of solar PV panels.

Question: What is the productive life of solar PV panels, and do they produce the same amount of electricity year-over-year?

Answer: The productive life of solar panels and the electricity production from these panels over time depend on factors such as climate, module type, and racking system, among others. The reduction in solar panel output over time is called degradation. NREL research has shown that solar panels have a median degradation rate of about 0.5% per year but the rate could be higher in hotter climates and for rooftop systems. A degradation rate of 0.5% implies that production from a solar panel will decrease at a rate of 0.5% per year. This means that in year 20, the module is producing approximately 90% of the electricity it produced in year 1.
