Looking Ahead To 2022

These alignments dont happen at every new and full Moon because the lunar orbit is tipped about 5° to Earths orbital plane only occasionally do the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up exactly enough for an eclipse to occur. And, as the diagram above implies, those alignments occur roughly a half year apart. So since the last eclipse of 2021 occurred in early December, the first eclipse of 2022 doesnt take place until April 30th.

The Total Solar Eclipse Is Just Two Years Away And Ohio Has A Front Row Seat

It hasnât been that long since the last awe-inspiring total solar eclipse swept across the country. Back in 2017, millions across North America witnessed it.

    What You Need To Know

    • The next total solar eclipse in North America crosses Ohio on April 8, 2024
    • A solar eclipse happens when the moon crosses in front of the sun
    • The northwestern half of the state will be in the path of totality
    • Viewers will need eye protection during the event

The next one will be here sooner than you might think. Plus, Ohioans will have some of the best seats in the house! The next total solar eclipse for North America will occur on April 8, 2024.

What Is The Period Of Totality

The period of totality refers to the time during a total eclipse when the moon completely obscures the sun. The period of totality is usually brief, lasting just a few minutes. Astronomy.com says the maximum period of totality for the April 8, 2024, solar eclipse is four minutes and 28 seconds.

The longest period of totality for the 2017 solar eclipse was quite a bit shorter, just about two minutes and 40 seconds, according to NASA.

Buy Your Equipment Before The Hype Train

A young eclipse viewer in Weiser, Idaho.

Prices for solar viewing equipment skyrocketed leading up to the actual eclipse. ISO-approved glasses were sold out in stores everywhere. I personally witnessed people on Facebook Marketplace attempting to sell flimsy, paper solar eclipse glasses for $25 and $30 a pair. And online, it proved difficult to find anything but bulk packages or overpriced five- or 10-packs.

A five-pack of solar eclipse glasses on is still selling for just under $60 , nearly $12.00 a pair. Back in June, the exact same five-pack on Amazon sold for just $6.50 , or $1.30 each.

Set a , wait for the price of solar viewing glasses to come back down, buy a few pairs for the family and store them in a safe place. On the other hand, seven years is quite a ways off. Maybe you’re better off setting a reminder and buying them at a much later date. Just remember to buy them before prices start skyrocketing a month or two before the 2024 eclipse.

How Can I See The Solar Eclipse

Indianapolis is in the path of the next total solar eclipse

The most important rule when viewing solar eclipses is to wear special glasses approved by the International Organization for Standardization . Never look at the sun directly without appropriate eye protection, as your eyes could be irreparably damaged. The exception is when the moon completely covers the sun during totality then it’s safe to look at the sun without glasses.

Once you’re set with eyewear, all you have to do is head to the path of totality during the eclipse and look up. Keep an eye out for special programming hosted by museums, libraries, and schools.

If you can’t travel to the path of totality, you might still be able to view a partial eclipse if you look at the sun through your eclipse glasses, the sun will look like it has a chunk taken out of it, but the sky won’t darken quite the same as it will within totality.

Furthermore, the eclipse will likely be live-streamed by observatories across North America, so you can safely and comfortably view the show from your own home.

Where Will The Total Solar Eclipse Be Visible

The solar eclipse first makes landfall in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, then travels from Texas to Maine in the U.S., clipping parts of continental Canada along the way. The eclipse finishes its North American journey over Newfoundland in Canada.

Skygazers will have a plethora of options to choose from when selecting where to view totality. According to an developed by Fred Espenak, a researcher at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and an eclipse modeler, and astrophotographer Xavier Jubier, an astrophotographer, the 2024 total solar eclipse will first touch North America off Mexico’s Pacific Coast, and the lunar shadow will progress in a northeast direction.

In the United States, totality will first appear in Texas, then Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri. In Illinois, the town of Carbondale eagerly awaits its second total solar eclipse in seven years. From there, the eclipse will proceeds over the skies of Indiana, Ohio, New York, Vermont and Maine. Most of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario fall under the path of totality, as well, including Niagara Falls. Canada also boasts several viewing sites, as the shadow’s path will sweeps eastward to Newfoundland.

Outside the path of totality, skywatchers in Mexico, the U.S., Canada, Central America and the Caribbean will see a partial solar eclipse. Here, the moon will appear to take a smooth bite out of the sun’s disk. During a partial eclipse, it is never safe to view the sun with the naked eye.

The Different Types Of Solar Eclipses

In addition to total eclipses, there are other sorts of solar eclipses. There are partial solar eclipses, where only a part of the sun is covered, and annular solar eclipses, where the moon is a bit farther away from us in its orbit and consequently appears too small to cover the sun completely. In an annular eclipse, the sun appears in a ring or annulus around the moon thats why this sort of eclipse is also known as a ring eclipse.

There are also hybrid eclipses, which look like a total or an annular eclipse, depending on the location of the observer. Then, of course, there are eclipses of the moon. One or another of these different eclipses is likely to occur in a location near you, within not too long of a time span!

Total Solar Eclipse On August 21 2022

A rare total solar eclipse will occur across an entire portion of the U.S. on Monday, August 21st, 2022, from Oregon to South Carolina.

Preparation for that solar eclipse is essential for viewing. The whole country can see the eclipse in a minimum of an incomplete phase, weather permitting. Whether youre spectating it within the road to totality, or perhaps in its partial path, you should never look in the sun without correct eye protection.

    What Is An Annular Eclipse

How Rare are Total Solar Eclipses?

An annular solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, but while the Moon is at its farthest point from Earth. Because the Moon is farther away from Earth, it appears smaller and does not block the entire face of the Sun. As a result, the Moon appears like a dark disk on top of a larger, bright disk. This creates what looks like a ring around the Moon, leading some to call it a ring of fire eclipse.

How To Safely Watch A Total Solar Eclipse

It is never safe to look directly into the sun, even if it’s partially obscured. Anyone watching a partial eclipse must wear eclipse glasses at all times if facing the sun, or use an alternate indirect method, NASA says. This also applies during a total eclipse up until the period of totality, when the sun is totally blocked. During that short time, when the moon completely obscures the sun, it is safe to look directly at the star, NASA says, but timing is crucial. What Will I See During The Total Solar Eclipse

The next 100 years of total solar eclipses in the U.S.

Within the eclipse’s path of totality, spectators can expect their senses to come alive. As the total solar eclipse approaches, there will be a gradual dimming of the sky. Viewers will notice a more obvious change if they’re wearing protective eyewear: They’ll see the moon’s round outline slowly block more and more of the sun, at first making it look like a fat banana, and later, more like a ring. As the moon continues to move across the face of the sun’s disk, it will get cooler all around. Plants and animals will start to react, and the sounds of nocturnal creatures might start up.

During the few minutes of totality and only then spectators can remove their protective eyewear and stare at the ethereal halo of the sun’s corona. Make sure to take a moment to look for stars or planets shining in the dim sky, and enjoy the 360-degree sunset that the total eclipse produces. Keep an eye out for lunar mountains and solar flares, too, which may be visible at the moon’s edges.
