Solar power is an excellent source of energy in many homes around the world. Solar energy panels have gained popularity in recent years with the many benefits offered. The power from the sun is leveraged and is used in different ways in many homes. Here are the 15 common residential uses of solar power in your homes.

Architecture And Urban Planning

Sunlight has influenced building design since the beginning of architectural history. Advanced solar architecture and urban planning methods were first employed by the Greeks and Chinese, who oriented their buildings toward the south to provide light and warmth.

The common features of passive solar architecture are orientation relative to the Sun, compact proportion , selective shading and thermal mass. When these features are tailored to the local climate and environment, they can produce well-lit spaces that stay in a comfortable temperature range. Socrates‘ Megaron House is a classic example of passive solar design. The most recent approaches to solar design use computer modeling tying together solar lighting, heating and ventilation systems in an integrated solar design package.Active solar equipment such as pumps, fans, and switchable windows can complement passive design and improve system performance.

Solar Power Is A Free Source Of Energy

The sun provides us with more energy than we could ever use, and no one can monopolise the sunlight. Your solar power system will start saving money from the moment its turned on, however, the advantages of solar power are best visible in the long-term. The longer you have your solar power system, the more you enjoy the benefits of solar technology and support the environment.

Aside from solar electricity, solar energy has a second application. We often associate solar energy with electricity, which is acquired through PV panels, but its also possible to use the energy generated by the sun for heating purposes. This process is accomplished by deploying solar thermal systems that simply convert the sunlight into heating solutions.

The acceptance of solar technology is at hand and we can start by increasing our use of solar panels.

    Hot Air Solar Systems

There are also full-house heating systems that use hot air rather than water or another liquid as the medium for moving warmth around the house. These systems work by gathering the air that has been heated by the sun beating down on a roof or an exposed wall, and circulating it through the home. For example, clay roof tiles may have air channels built into them that allow the warmed air to circulate.

Houses that use hot air solar heating often have roof or siding surfaces designed to absorb heat. Many systems have some form of a powered circulating fan to distribute warm air. These systems are often designed to heat single rooms only. You can see this type of system as a much more sophisticated version of the old-fashioned sunroom, which was kept warm by sunlight beating down through large windows and heating up a stone or ceramic tile floor.

    Solar Energy: An Overview

With the growing threat of climate change due to the excessive release of carbon emissions, many nations are looking to clean energy alternatives to replace traditional fossil fuels.

Of all the clean energy alternatives, solar has arguably been the most expensive though prices have been declining. However, after considering the pros and cons along with the expectation that prices will continue to decline, the future of solar energy is looking rather bright.

The pros of solar energy include that it is a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels and has a low impact on the environment and the potential for any country to produce it. The cons are that it only produces energy when the sun is shining, needs a significant amount of land, and that certain solar technologies require rare materials.

Honestly The Skys Not Just The Sourceits The Limit

We know that a major roadblock for those cautious homeowners flirting with the idea of using solar energy is reliability. What about cloudy days? What if my system is not positioned perfectly? What if my generation is not enough.

Well, it so happens that we live in an area where we are not deprived of ample sunlight for using solar energy. Indeed, our access to reliable sunshine play no insignificant part in the popularity of solar energy systems around here. And we dont have the long, dark winters that they do in other parts of the country to contend with, either.

That is why we can confidently say that there is every chance of running your entire home off of solar energy, year round. From your air conditioning system to your lights to your appliances, there is no reason why, with a proper installation and the right amount of solar panels in place, you cannot do so. In fact, ideally, youll be over-generating electricity, earning credits that you can then use to purchase electricity from the grid when you come up a bit short at times.

If that sounds too good to be true, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. Were happy to provide you with honest testimonials about the efficacy of our solar energy setups. While there may have been a time where the application of such energy was severely limited, requiring supplemental energy from the grid consistently, this really is not the case anymore.

Solar Stills: Speeding Up Evaporation To Produce Clean Water Faster

Solar Panels Plus Farming? Agrivoltaics Explained

Another method for producing clean water uses a tank-like device called a solar still. In its most basic form, a solar still is a black-bottomed vessel filled with water and topped with clear plastic or glass. As the water absorbs heat from the sun, it evaporates. Clean water collects on the clear covering and trickles into a collector, while the contaminants are left behind. Using traditional methods, a large, expensive solar still only produces enough water for a small family.

To speed up the process, scientists are experimenting with affordable, commercially available hydrogels placed atop the waters surface in a solar still. This breaks up water molecule bonds so they evaporate more readily. The latest version of this technology evaporates water 12 times faster than the natural rate. This allows a solar still 1 square meter in size to produce 30 liters of drinking water per day, enough to meet the needs of a small family.

The High Cost Of Solar Trash

The industrys current circular capacity is woefully unprepared for the deluge of waste that is likely to come. The financial incentive to invest in recycling has never been very strong in solar. While panels contain small amounts of valuable materials such as silver, they are mostly made of glass, an extremely low-value material. The long life span of solar panels also serves to disincentivize innovation in this area.

As a result, solars production boom has left its recycling infrastructure in the dust. To give you some indication, First Solar is the sole U.S. panel manufacturer we know of with an up-and-running recycling initiative, which only applies to the companys own products at a global capacity of two million panels per year. With the current capacity, it costs an estimated $20$30 to recycle one panel. Sending that same panel to a landfill would cost a mere $1$2.

The direct cost of recycling is only part of the end-of-life burden, however. Panels are delicate, bulky pieces of equipment usually installed on rooftops in the residential context. Specialized labor is required to detach and remove them, lest they shatter to smithereens before they make it onto the truck. In addition, some governments may classify solar panels as hazardous waste, due to the small amounts of heavy metals they contain. This classification carries with it a string of expensive restrictions hazardous waste can only be transported at designated times and via select routes, etc.

Can Critical Metals For Renewable Energy Products Be Found In Existing Mines New Research Says Yes

Our outdoor lighting and solar power kits can be used for a wide range ...

    by Geological Society of America

Ramping up renewable energy products will require a range of critical metals. One of these elements, tellurium, is gaining in popularity for use in photovoltaics, or solar panels. As global demand for solar panels continues to increase, so does the need for critical metals like tellurium.

Tellurium isn’t mined as a solo mineral. Currently, most tellurium is collected as a by-product from copper mining. “The fundamental question is: how much tellurium is out there?” says Simon Jowitt, economic geologist at University of Nevada Las Vegas. He and co-author Brian McNulty are trying to find out where this tellurium is and how much metal could be there. Jowitt will present their work at the Geological Society of America annual meeting on Wednesday, October 12.

Unfortunately, the amount of tellurium in a mine is rarely reported. To fill in the gaps and create estimates of critical minerals, Jowitt and McNulty developed proxies to estimate tellurium content globally.

Their first proxy results from Resource and Reserve estimates. In these reports, a mining company uses their own investigation data and estimates that there are X-million tons of metal in the ground. These reports are used to estimate the value of a mine site.
