Depending on the batterys chemistry, a solar battery can cost anywhere from $200 to $15,000 to install.

Most residential grid-tied solar panels are paired with lithium-ion batteries, which cost anywhere from $7,000 to $14,000 to install. There are some small-capacity lead-acid batteries that can cost as little as $200, but they wont be able to power much in your home and are typically used as emergency backup power for RVs.

Despite Tesla claiming that the Tesla Powerwall cost would drop by half in the next three years, weve seen the price of the Powerwall increase twice, eventually reaching its current price since that announcement in September 2020.

Future Changes To The Electricity Market

The electricity grid in Australia wasn’t originally designed to cope with large numbers of homes exporting solar power into it. There are proposals for how to modernise the grid and manage it more effectively and fairly, and these include a possible surcharge or “solar tax” to owners of solar PV systems who want to sell their excess power to the grid. What’s this all about, and does it mean a storage battery becomes a better option?

What’s the problem with the electricity grid?

The electricity grid in Australia was originally built with the expectation that electricity went in one direction only: from power stations to homes and businesses. It wasn’t designed to also allow for solar-generated power to flow back the other way. While that’s been possible to a reasonable extent so far, the grid is starting to hit the limits of how much electricity it can handle from domestic rooftop solar.

The grid needs a lot of work to update it, to become flexible enough to take full advantage of renewable energy sources including domestic solar feed-in, but also allow flexibility for all consumers. This work has to be paid for somehow. Currently, some consumers have little access to the benefits of solar power but must still pay for electricity, and to some extent they subsidise the benefits that solar owners obtain.

Does Eon Sell Renewable Energy

Eon generates a small amount of the renewable electricity used by its customers and buys around a third directly from renewable generators. It also buys renewable energy certificates to match more of its customers use with renewable power.

Some 81.9% of Eons electricity fuel mix is renewable, 1.8% is nuclear and the remainder comes from fossil fuels.

The renewable electricity it generates is from biomass, which it says is fuelled by responsibly sourced waste and recycled wood. Eons Sheffield site uses locally sourced waste wood which otherwise would have gone to landfill.

Eon also buys around a third of the electricity used by its customers from renewable generators. It says it helped generate many of its supply sites over the last decade.

A solar battery will save you £200 per year at current prices, but its still not worth it just yet.

Lets start at the beginning. If you dont have a solar battery, youll typically end up not using around 50% of the power your solar panels produce.

You can sell this extra energy back to the National Grid, through the Smart Export Guarantee , but youll only receive a maximum of 5.57p per kWh.

Electricity currently costs more than three times that, at 18.9p per kWh, so youll save much more money if you simply store your excess energy in your solar battery for later.

The average three-bedroom house with solar panels will generate 1,492 kWh of spare energy per year.

This will save you £364, made up of £282 you wont have to pay the National Grid, and £82 you can get by selling your excess power through the SEG.

However, if you could use this extra energy instead of selling it, youd save £564 which is £200 more and thats where solar batteries excel.

Solar panels usually last 25 years, meaning youll probably need to buy two sets of batteries over their lifetime, costing a sizable £9,000.

That will dwarf your £200 annual saving on your energy bills, making the investment a poor one at the moment but this will change.

Are Solar Batteries Covered By The Solar Investment Tax Credit

The Internal Revenue Service specifies that battery installations for which all energy that is used to charge the battery can be effectively assured to come from the Solar Energy System are eligible for the full solar tax credit.

In other words, yes, solar batteries like the Tesla Powerwall and the LG Chem are eligible for the solar tax credit if they are charged by solar energy more than 75% of the time.

This means that if you install a battery with a new solar system, you will save 26% on the total combined cost.

Do I Have To Have Solar Panels To Install A Battery

No. You can charge a home battery using electricity you buy from the grid. If you have a time-of-use electricity tariff you can save money by charging your battery when electricity is cheaper, and using the power from it so you’re not buying from the grid at pricey peak times.

But most people do not have time-of-use tariffs yet. These will become more widely available as smart meters are rolled-out. Economy 7 and Economy 10 are types existing of time-of-use tariffs, usually linked to storage heating systems.
