How To Make Your Own Solar Cells From Scratch

How To Build A Solar Panel From Scratch

DIY 100W Solar Panel: How to Make Homemade Solar Panels from Scratch – Part 1

A solar panel is the workhorse of any solar power system. A home solar energy system consists of one or more solar panels plus the wiring and regulatory devices necessary to turn the energy they generate into electric power. The power generated is either used directly in the home or sold to an electric utility through net metering for credit used to buy power later. Whether your system is on or off the grid, the solar panels are the most costly part of the equipment necessary to build your system.

You can save a lot of money on your solar system by installing it yourself rather than hiring a contractor, but even so the cost of the solar panels can run to several thousand dollars for a complete system capable of meeting all your energy needs. But you can shave off a lot of that cost by building your own solar panels from scratch.

So Long Silicon: Researchers Create Solar Panels From Cheap Copper Oxide

Researchers from the University of California and Berkeley Lab have discovered a way of making photovoltaic cells out of any semiconducting material, not just beautiful, expensive crystals of silicon. In principle, this could open the doors to much cheaper solar power.

Almost every solar panel on the market is made by cutting off two thin slices from a large crystal of silicon, and then doping them with impurities to enhance the photovoltaic effect phosphorous to make n-type silicon, and boron to make p-type silicon. These slices are layered together, electrodes are added to the top and bottom, the whole thing is framed in protective glass and voila, a standard photovoltaic cell.

Now, in theory, you can dope any semiconductor but cheaper, more-readily-available semiconductors, such as copper oxide, dont retain dopants very well, eventually leading to the breakdown of the p-n junctions. Silicon holds dopants very well, but it isnt cheap.

The electric field effect isnt new , but its application in photovoltaic cells is novel. The main problem that the UoC and Berkeley Lab researchers came across is that you need a contact above the semiconductor to deliver the electric field but of course that obscures the semiconductor from sunlight. The solution devised by the researchers is simple: You either use a very thin contact, like graphene , or you use a series of narrow, fin-like contacts .

Install The Racking For Your Solar Panels

When purchasing racking, choosing which option to buy depends on where your panels will go. For instance, will they be ground mounted, or on your RV? This will determine the type of racking you need to buy. Once you pick your racking, you need to map out where you will drill the holes to secure the racking to your structure.

Testing The Solar Cell

  • 1Clip a multimeters negative lead to the exposed edge of the dyed slide. The negative lead is the black cable and has a – sign on it. Squeeze open the alligator clip at the end of this lead cable and clip it onto the exposed edge of the dyed slide on your solar cell.XResearch source
  • You can tell which slide is the dyed slide because you can see the reddish-purple tinted coating through the transparent outside.
  • You can purchase a basic multimeter with alligator clip leads online for about $12 USD.
  • 2Put the multimeters positive lead on the exposed edge of the carbon slide. The positive lead is the red cable and has a + sign on it. Open up the alligator clip on this lead and stick it on to the exposed edge of the graphite-covered conductive slide on your solar cell.XResearch source
  • You can tell which slide is the graphite coated slide because it will look grayish when you look through that side of the solar cell.
  • 3Measure the voltage of the solar cell under full sun illumination. Set your multimeter to measure in volts and place your solar cell in full sunlight. Read the number on the multimeter to see how many volts of electricity your solar cell is generating.XResearch source
  • As an alternative to natural sunlight, you can use an incandescent or halogen lamp.
  • The electricity output will vary based on the strength of the light source, but this type of homemade solar cell typically generates between about 0.4 and 0.6 volts of electricity.

How to Build a Solar Panel From Scratch

The cost of solar panels have come way down within the last decade. It used to cost upwards of $5/Watt. But nowadays you can find and should shoot for $1/Watt. Building this panel was not worth it if you only take into account the dollars per Watt and time spent doing so, which are both incredibly viable things to weigh when preparing for your solar set up.

This panels specifications, rated on its 36 cells, would be labeled at about 68 Watts. However, you can never rely on getting the highest rating of a panel because panels arent usually at their maximum angle for more than an hour, if even that long. I had strung four cells together prior to building the panel to get an estimate of the cells amp output and instead of getting 3.8A or close to what the retailer claimed, I only got 2.0A or slightly higher. That makes the panels Watt output to be from around 35W up to 65W. The total cost of this project was over a hundred dollars. That means Im paying about $2-$3/Wnot cost effective.

On top of that inefficient cost, it took me hours and hours to make and I have no warranty. I cant call anyone to complain or ask for service or support except myself.

Make Your Own Solar Panels Any Size You Want

Special Note About The Size of Your Solar CellsThe solar cells we use to build solar panels are rated: 1.75 watts each. This is just one size you can use to make your own solar panels but you don’t have to settle with this. If you want to, you can use bigger solar cells and make way more powerful solar panels.

If you really want to build solar panels that are much bigger with the materials available today, I would suggest substituting the solar cells used in the examples on this page with mono crystalline solar cells rated at 41 Volts and 5.49 Amps. If you use 72 of these solar cells to make one panel, your one finished panel will be able to deliver 225 Watts of power maximum in optimal sunlight.

So keep in mind that you can buy any sized solar cell you want and substitute the new cell’s volts, amps and watt ratings in the examples below to create a more powerful solar panel.

Easy Steps To Make A Solar Light

Building a solar light has never been so hard. It does not require any technical or electric knowledge to get yourself a solar light. You can follow our instructions, and you will be good to go.

    What is Required

Here are the parts and tools that you need: Hot glue gun or superglue, Jar, Led lights, Soldering machine, or wire nut, Battery holder, Solar panel 2Volts max, AA or AAA NiMH batteries, PCB circuit board with a dusk to dawn regulator switch.

To DIY a solar light, you will need some products, such as.

A drill is to pierce the jar. If you are skillful when it comes to wires, you can also use the wire nut to solder the switch and the wires.

But that will come later in the article. When you purchase the solar panel parts, make sure they are not too big or too small because we will glue them to the opposite sides.

The regular LED lights should function well when it comes to type and color, but using the 0.5 LED stray hat white is the best option as it will produce bright, intense light, which will make sure your living area is well lit. You will need a solar panel to capture the suns rays and convert them into electric energy.

You can find excellent at a relative price. It would help if you had a small solar panel of 40 mA, and 2V is good enough to charge the AA NiMh batteries. Both the AA and AAA batteries are perfect and will work well with the battery holder. You need to make sure the batteries are rechargeable.

    Making Single Crystal Silicon

    • 3 Solar cells are made from silicon boules, polycrystalline structures that have the atomic structure of a single crystal. The most commonly used process for creating the boule is called the Czochralski method. In this process, a seed crystal of silicon is dipped into melted polycrystalline silicon. As the seed crystal is withdrawn and rotated, a cylindrical ingot or “boule” of silicon is formed. The ingot withdrawn is unusually pure, because impurities tend to remain in the liquid.

Determine Your Power Needs For An Off

For any type of DIY solar project, you must determine your power needs as previously discussed. With off-grid, you take that value and figure out the number of batteries youll need to store it in. If youd prefer to have a supply that lasts for several days or weeks, you must take that into account, too.

This gets complicated with batteries since theyre rated to be stored at room temperature or slightly above. This means their storage capacity is significantly reduced if youre in freezing conditions. So, when youre in a cold location or season, you may need to increase your battery bank size significantly for this reason alone.

    Battery voltage

The voltage of your battery bank whether 12V, 24V, or 48V matters, too. It affects the thickness of the connecting wires between them and the cable going to the inverter.

To determine the voltage, consider how many watts you need to power all your appliances. A 12V battery bank may be adequate for a cellphone and a few 12V DC appliances. But if youre looking at generating 2,000 watts or more, a 24V or 48V battery pack makes more sense.

    Sun hours

Yet another important consideration is the number of sun hours that your panels will receive every day. This number does not equal the length of daylight and varies with the seasons.

It depends on the angle of the sun in relation to your panels orientation. Maps of sun hours for the U.S. are available through the National Renewable Energy Laboratory .

Choosing The Right Solar Panels For The Job

If youre limited on space for your DIY solar project, monocrystalline panels are the best option due to their greatest efficiency and similar cost to their polycrystalline cousins.

Polycrystalline panels may be suitable if space is not an issue and youre trying to reduce costs even in small ways.

Thin films arent suitable for small-scale solar installation projects, nor are they worth it.

    Tabbing The Solar Cells

Its possible to buy pre-tabbed solar cells they are incredibly expensive. Solar cell tabbing is a crucial process, and the required precautions should be taken before the solar cells are to be tabbed.

A few of the precautionary measures listed below are as follows:

  • Ensure to always wear your gloves when handling your solar cells.
  • These cells should be handled extremely carefully because they are highly fragile.
  • When soldering, ensure putting on a mask plus safety glasses to protect yourself from fumes and flicking solder.
  • Solar cell tabbing can be achieved by welding the wire to the solar cells contact points. Detailed steps of the solar cell tabbing are given below:

  • The solar cell should be placed in a clean room with a negative part facing upwards.
  • The flex pen should be rubbed over the touch strips. These are two lines through the solar cells.
  • Please note that each pieces length must be twice the solar cells height when cutting the tabbing wire.
  • Take the piece of tabbing wire then place it on the contact strips. Tabbing wire is coated with solder already. You will need to heat the soldering iron and solder the tabbing wire to the solar cell. Place the piece of tabbing wire on the contact strips. The wire is already coated with a soldier. Place the soldering iron on heat and weld the wire to the cell.
  • If you do not wish to go through this process, Id advise you to buy pre tabbed solar cells.
