How to connect solar panels in a solar project? Well, there are three ways that you connect a solar power system when you install a PV array. It can be a Grid-Tied, Off-Grid or a Hybrid Solar System. We will discuss each type in turn, considering the advantages and equipment for the installation.

Is A Standby Generator Or Solar Battery System Better For You

Instead of buying a generator, you can install a solar battery to provide backup power to your home in the event of an outage. Whether a generator or a solar battery is best for you really depends on the reasons why you want to install a backup system in the first place.

A standby generator is best if you live somewhere that regularly experiences multi-day power outages and you want to be able to power your entire home, as generators offer more power than a solar battery can. Generators also tend to be cheaper than a solar battery storage system.

If youre looking to have access to emergency backup power for a day or two that can power your most important loads , and you also want to reduce your day-to-day reliance on the utility, then a solar battery is a better choice.

Another benefit to solar batteries is that you can use them daily to maximize the amount of solar energy your home uses. Plus, a battery can keep your solar panels running when the grid is down – something a generator cannot do.

You can maximize your home’s resilience against power outages by installing both a solar battery and a standby generator. Much like with solar panels, a generator and battery cannot power your home at the same time. When the power goes out, the solar battery will power your home first until it is depleted. Then the generator will kick in.

Do Solar Panels And Generators Work Together

Heres the deal – even if you have a standby generator hooked up to your home, your solar panels arent going to turn on when the grid is down. Unfortunately, you cannot run your home with both solar power and generator power at the same time.

In other words, the generator and the solar panels cannot operate parallel to one another.

Like we said earlier, solar panels send feedback to the grid, creating a dangerous scenario for utility repair workers. Similarly, if the panels remained on, they would send feedback to the generator and thereby cause damage to the generator, the solar system, or both. Plus, the energy generators produce isnt powerful enough to boot up most solar inverters anyway.

This doesnt mean you cant have a standby generator if you have solar, or that you cant get solar if you already have a standby generator installed. There are many homes that have both solar panels and generators, especially when it comes to off-grid systems.

The panels and generator just need to be wired properly so that the two wont interfere with one another. Your solar installer or a certified electrician will be able to help you figure out the best way to do this.

How To Combine Wind Turbine And Solar Panels Wiring

If you want to utilize both wind turbine and solar panels, you are inevitably going to have to figure out how to configure the wiring in a way that doesnt cause any damage. Solar panels are fairly simple, based on the fact that they can easily be shut off. Wind generators are far different. They do not have the ability to be shut off. Wind turbines need to have a constant load or they will end up spinning freely, which can cause damage to the generator.

Wind generators are going to be constantly generating power, which means you have to have somewhere to dump the excess energy that is produced. There are controllers that are made specifically for this purpose, so you should purchase one of these devices if you are trying to utilize a wind generator. This will allow you to channel the excess energy that is produced by the wind turbine system into a water heater or another appliance. Using one of these controllers takes a potential problem and creates even more efficiency, as the excess energy can always be used.

Some people are under the impression that they need to have separate wiring for each energy system they are using. This could not be further from the truth and is truly inefficient when you consider how easy it is to combine the wiring. All you need is a controller that is big enough to handle both at the same time. These controllers are fairly inexpensive as well, so there really is no reason to configure two separate wiring systems.

There are only two real options seperate flexible solar panels or a folding type of flexible such as those supplied by Dokio.

I use 100 watt flexibles for most applications, from pergola mounting to running a trolling motor on my inflatable canoe. The big thing is that they are about 5 times lighter than standard fixed solar panels.

On the downside, they tend not to last as long. I make a custom frame for them out of aluminium angle, which helps keep them rigid without adding too much extra weight.

How To Connect Two Or More Panels

You can combine several panels to charge your Yeti faster. There are two main ways to do this, although there is also a third way for large setups.

The two most popular ways are called parallel and series. A parallel connection will add the amperages together but keep the voltage the same. A series connection will add the voltage together but keep the amps the same.

Since the Yeti power stations have voltage limits, youre going to have to do some math if you want to connect panels in series. The amps and volts ratings of a solar panel can usually be found on the panel itself, or in the manual.

When you start connecting several panels together, I recommend using the Anderson input instead of the 8mm, since the 8mm input can only handle/use 10A input .

Its also important to know the total voltage and amperage that are going to be sent through the wires, especially when choosing extension cables.

The WindyNation MC4 extension cables I use and recommend come in different sizes. This wire size calculator will tell you what gauge wire you should use depending on amps, distance, and acceptable voltage loss.

Renogy has also listed the NEC maximum current for different wire sizes below the calculator. But you also need to make sure that the specific cable you buy can handle the total amperage.

Which Yeti model do you have?

If you have a Yeti power station with a sticker on the front that says Never Exceed 22V, you can only connect panels in parallel.

Besides the complicated setup, you also need to understand that the connection of the solar panel to the grid-tie inverter is expensive, with the batteries being the most expensive components for the setup. Youd spend at least $10,000 to add batteries to the average-sized grid-tied inverter system.

How Many Watts Can The Goal Zero Lithium Power Stations Handle

It depends on which Yeti you have.

The older Yeti lithium models can handle 360W via the built-in PWM charge controller, and 360W via the optional MPPT expansion module. Both the 8mm and Anderson inputs can be used at the same time.

On the newer Yeti X power stations you can only use one input at a time, and its the port receiving the highest voltage that is going to be active.

The Anderson input can handle up to 50A, or 600W. The 8mm input can handle up to 10A .

If you purchase the MPPT expansion module and install it on your Yeti 1000X or larger, you can add an additional 360W.

Even though the max input of the new Yeti X is 600W, Goal Zero recommends using up to 800 watts of total solar panels.

Remember that the 8mm input only allows 10A input, so if youre connecting more than that you should use the High Power port.

Check the voltage on the panel and the amperage output and make sure it is within the limits of the built in MPPT controller. Is there a manual for the Beadens? I don’t know what exact panel you have but the OcV is about 21.6 – but amps is about 6 which is more than this can handle? If it works, you only need some 10 awg PV wireInput

Your Renogy panel has MC4 connectors so you need an adapter cable that is:MC4 to 5.5mm charging port based on ‘s chart.Can more than likely be found on Amazon or does Beauden sell them? The amps from your 100 watt panel is no problem for your power station even though the chart says 2 which seems off.

What About Running The Air Conditioner

Running the A/C in an RV is one of the hardest things to do with solar. Mostly because air conditioners use a lot of power. Air conditioner watt usage is calculated by taking the BTUs and dividing it by 10. This gives you 10% of the total BTUs. As a rule of thumb, thats how many watts it uses when continuously running. For example, a 13,500 BTU A/C unit uses about 1,350 watts of power .

Running that size of air conditioner off a RV solar power generator like the Yeti 1400 means it would only run for about an hour. The Yeti battery s 1,425wh and is not expandable to have more batteries. This means 1,425-watt hours ÷ 1,350-watts = 1.05hrs of maximum run time.

This is why the Titan is such an amazing option. With a 3,000w inverter it can definitely run 1,350 watts without breaking a sweat. Since the battery is 2,000wh we know it will run for a minimum of 1.5 hours. Thats if there are no solar panels connected and only has one battery.
