How To Choose Solar Inverter

C What Is The Best Solar Inverter Size To Buy

How To Choose A Solar Inverter In 2021

There is often some confusion around this question.

In general, at a minimum the inverter needs to be able to handle the maximum power that your solar power system can generate. That usually means that if you want a 5kW solar power system, you get 5kW of panels and a 5kW solar inverter to suit. Simple eh? Actually, it can get a little more complicated than that. Let me explain.

Because of system losses in the panels, your solar inverter can actually be rated at up to 25% less than your panel array in some situations. Confused? So were a number of installers for some time! The Clean Energy Council guidelines for solar inverter sizing changed a while back, and I provide a detailed explanation of when undersized inverters are allowed here.

A final word of caution: Be aware that solar inverters are rated in DC input and AC output terms. Make sure yours is also rated to suit the output of your solar panels in DC!

Some retailers will offer you a larger solar inverter so you can add extra panels at a later date. Before making a decision to buy one of these, you need to consider the following:

  • Do I have enough space on my roof to put new solar panels?
  • Will my current panels be available in the future?

In general, the best advice is to install as many solar panels as you can afford , and purchase a solar inverter to suit the maximum power of the system.

What about the physical size of the solar inverter?

Best Commercial Solar Inverters

While this article is primarily focused on the leading residential, single-phase string solar inverters, most manufacturers also produce a range of inverters designed for larger 3-phase residential and commercial applications. String solar inverters up to and above 100kW are also increasingly popular for use in utility-scale solar farms due to the advantages of string level monitoring and ease of servicing compared to single central inverters. Below is our list of the most popular 3-phase inverters on the Australian market in the 8kW to 30kW, and 30kW to 100kW categories.

Inverter Battery Size Chart

In addition to inverter size, you should also have a battery backup. This will help in case of a power failure. The size of the battery depends on how much energy you use. If you use too small a battery, then you risk running out of power.

On the other hand, if you use too big a battery, you just end up spending too much. Unless you plan to or foresee an increase in your energy consumption, you must not invest in a battery that is too large for your use.

Therefore, to calculate the size of your battery, you should first estimate the amount of energy you would need. This is the product of the amount of power your devices use and the time they use it for. Thus, it is in kilowatt-hours. For example, say you use your fridge for 5 hours a day.

The energy you would use = 100 * 5 = 0.5kWh

Once you have done this, you can calculate the size of your battery. This depends on 3 main factors:

  • Type of battery â There are mainly two types of batteries. They are lead-acid batteries and lithium-based ones.
  • Depth of discharge â This is the amount of battery that will be discharged compared to its capacity in terms of percentage.
  • Multiplication factor â This is based on the inefficiency of the battery

You can follow this simple table to help you with your calculations.

Battery type
/100 126

Note that these values have been calculated by keeping in mind that the energy you would use is exactly 100 kWh.

How To Choose A Solar Inverter: 9 Steps

A solar inverter functions to convert the direct current generated by solar panels into the alternating current which is used by families. So, it is the soul of electricity processing. From this perspective, choosing the best solar inverter for you is extremely important if you are planning to go solar or buy it for your solar power plant. However, facing a plethora of modules and brands online and offline, you may feel difficult in choosing the best one for you. Out of this concern, you need to read the instruction below to learn how.

9 Steps:

Learn about the commonly used solar inverters.

  • Grid-tie inverter: It functions to convert DC to AC, with an ability to synchronize to interface with a utility line. This inverter is designed to transmit your unused electricity to the grid and has no battery. MTTP technology may be equipped in its input circuitry.
  • Off-grid inverter: It works to convert DC to AC from a storage battery. These inverters are used to provide electricity to a number of residential and commercial projects. These lower watt ones are mainly used to power the appliances in each family.
  • Hybrid inverter: This product also functions to convert DC to AC and its difference is that it can be used in both a grid-tie PV system and an off-grid PV system.

Larger Systems Should Use A 24v Or 48v Battery Bank

How to Choose the Right Solar Inverter: A Comprehensive Guide from ...

At ~1000W and above you can find 24V and 48V inverters. Running with a higher battery voltage has many advantages.

  • Cables can be much smaller and longer without heavy losses. The extremely fat cables needed for a high capacity 12V system are stiff and very difficult to handle, hard to connect to, and difficult an expensive to obtain.
  • Save money on charge controllers. The same MPPT charge controller can handle double the number of panels when charging a 24V battery or 4X as many with a 48V battery. Example: The Outback Flexmax 60 charge controller is limited to approximately 720W worth of solar panels with a 12V battery, If you need more panels than that youll have to buy multiple charge controllers and hook them in parallel. But with a 48V battery bank the exact same Flexmax 60 charge controller can handle 2880W of solar panels.
  • You can build a much higher capacity battery bank without exceeding the 3 strings in parallel rule. If the largest batteries you can find locally are 12V 200Ah, three in parallel only gets you 2400Wh of usable capacity. But you can build a 48V battery bank using them in 3 strings giving 9600Wh. Use our battery balancer to keep the individual batteries in each series evenly charged.

    Different Types Of Solar Inverters

In general, solar inverters can be categorised under on-grid, off-grid and hybrid inverters.

    • On-grid Inverter: It converts DC to AC and sends any surplus energy to the grid. These inverters are connected to the utility grid as well.
    • Off-grid Inverter: It converts DC to AC from a battery. Such inverters can power many commercial and residential projects.
    • Hybrid Inverter: Similar to other types of inverters, a hybrid inverter converts DC to AC. However, it can be used with an on-grid system as well as an off-grid PV system.

What Charge Controller Does Your Inverter Need

How To Choose A Solar Inverter

A 200W solar panel running on a 250W inverter and 12V battery requires a 20A charge controller. For the best results, you should use an MPPT charge controller.

To calculate the charge controller size, divide the total solar panel watts by the battery voltage.

Watts / volts = charge controller size in amp hours

In our example we have a 200W solar panel and a 100ah 12V battery.

    200 / 12 = 16.6

The charge controller has to be at least 16.6 amps. The closest size available is 20A, so you should get a 20A charge controller.

The most common charge controller sizes are 10A, 20A, 30A, 40A, 60A, and 100A. Use the same formula â watts / volts = amps â and choose the next largest charge controller size. Just like with inverters, you should make allowances for the size.

Charge controllers are either PWM or MPPT. MPPT controllers do a better job of maximizing solar power output and battery charging. If you are going to use several 200W solar panels together, an MPPT charge controller will be ideal.

    Solar Inverter Versus Normal Inverters

The inverter of solar inverter and normal inverter are same. The difference of solar inverter from normal inverter is that the solar inverter consists of solar charge controller and some switching circuits. Solar inverter has a terminal for connecting battery and solar panels of correct rating. The battery is charged from the output of solar panels when it is under sufficient sunlight. It allows reducing the electricity bill.

The normal inverter can be converted into solar inverter by connecting charge controller along with a automatic transfer switch. If the solar panel gives sufficient supply to charge the battery, then the automatic transfer switch will be routed to the battery. At that time it does not take supply from main supply. If the solar panel does not give sufficient supply, then the battery charges from the main supply by automatically routing the automatic transfer switch.

Solar inverter can be classified into 3.They are given as follows:-
