How Much Does It Cost To Go Solar In California

Solar Panel Cost After Incentives Rebates And Tax Credits

How Much do Solar Panels Cost in California? – Solar to the People

California’s progressive leadership has done good work in spurring investment in renewable energy. All homeowners are eligible for the federal solar tax credit, and the state offers several incentive programs and solar rebates aimed at further increasing access to reliable, affordable solar panels. However, given the state’s ambitious climate targets and the energy burden on most of its population, it could probably do more.

Let’s take a closer look at the solar incentives available to California residents.

Do Solar Panels Work At Night

Solar panels do not produce energy at night. Solar panels work hard all day producing electricity from the sun. They also support sustainable solar energy solutions at night. You can continue benefiting from their energy production after sunset through net metering and solar battery storage.

How Many Solar Panels Will You Need

To know how many solar panels you will need, you will want to determine how much electricity you use in your home and the solar panel types installed.

The average house in the United States uses about 900 kilowatt hours a monthroughly 11,000 kWh a year. You can easily calculate your actual usage by looking back at your electricity bills. As a general rule of thumb

  • A 3-kWh solar panel system will generate about 3,600 kWh 4,800 kWh per year.
  • A 5-kWh system produces about 6,000 8,000 kWh per year.
  • A 10-kWh system can produce about 12,000 kWh 16,000 kWh per year.

Depending on the size of the system, the solar panels cost would be between $4,000 and $16,000. Add in another $3,000 to $10,000 for other necessary components, such as racks for the panels, wiring, solar inverter costs, and the total solar panel installation cost would now be closer to $20,000.

How Does The Federal Solar Tax Credit Work Irs In California

Who can claim the solar tax credit?

The solar tax credit is an incentive introduced by the federal government enabling home-owners to claim a refund of a certain percentage of the cost of installing a solar power system.

Its done by entering the capital cost in the next years IRS return and your tax owed is reduced dollar-for-dollar. With a tax rebate of $1600 and say you owe $4600, you will pay only $3000.

Example: The solar tax rebate for 2021 is being maintained at 26%. If a solar power installation costs $17000, then your tax rebate is calculated like this:

17000 x 26% = $4420 refund against taxes

The rebate started out at 30% in 2019, went down to 26% in 2020 through 2022 and will go down to 22% for panels installed in 2023.

The tax credit is supposed to stop after 2023, but it will probably be extended as President Biden just announced a renewed commitment to all things solar .

More significant solar power systems may cost more upfront, but they also should result in more savings. For example, if you need to install a 10kW solar energy system to satisfy all of your electricity use, you may have to pay more out of pocket, but you could be cutting down on a notable monthly expense and saving more money as a result.

In addition $0-down, low-interest solar loans are becoming increasingly popular, making it even easier to get a solar panel system and boost your solar savings.

How Much Energy Is Required To Charge Nissan Leaf S Ev

It isnt necessary to use the whole battery capacity as statistics show that a battery is almost never drained during normal use.

The average US commute is just 30 miles per day, so well use that figure. If we use the combined driving range of 111 MPGe for an average efficiency value of the Leaf, this equates to about 3.3 miles per kWh.

This means that driving a Nissan Leaf 30 miles/day, about 10 kWh of energy is needed from the battery at an efficiency of 3.3 miles per kWh.

For other ranges amount of energy needed can be seen in the table below:

Los Angeles Is Hot For Solar Power

Los Angeles has been a leader in solar power since the 1970s.

Even though people drive everywhere in mostly gasoline powered cars, people in the greater Los Angeles want to jump to the renewable energy revolution, and they are doing it one home at a time.

We chose Pasadena, one of the cities surrounding Los Angeles, and it is one of the top areas where people are installing solar on their homes and businesses. This is why we picked it as our sixth city in our ongoing series outlining the cost of solar power in different areas.

Keep in mind the numbers we use are based on the average home size, average electricity usage and average family size in the Los Angeles area.

The home we picked is a single family home of about 1,300 square ft and a family of three live there. The two parents and their daughter do not have a pool or a hot tub in the backyard. They just use the air conditioning most of the year, for Pasadena has more warm days than cold days. The household monthly average is $150 a month for utilities.

Even though Los Angeles has higher than average electric rates, the home is well insulated, and it has modern doors and windows to help keep the temperature close to tolerable. They do use the air conditioning, but because of all the improvements, it doesnt take as much energy to cool the home and it stays comfortable longer.

California Has Too Much Solar Power That Might Be Good For Ratepayers

California set two renewable energy records last week: the most solar power ever flowing on the states main electric grid, and the most solar power ever taken offline because it wasnt needed.

Theres no contradiction: As California utilities buy more and more solar power as part of the states quest to confront climate change, supply and demand are increasingly out of sync. The states fleet of solar farms and rooftop panels frequently generate more electricity than Californians use during the middle of the day a phenomenon that has sent lawmakers and some climate advocates scrambling to find ways to save the extra sunlight rather than let it go to waste.

But for ratepayers, an oversupply of solar power might actually be a good thing.

New research published in the peer-reviewed journal Solar Energy suggests California should embrace the idea of building more solar panels than it can consistently use, rather than treating oversupply as a problem to be solved. It sounds counterintuitive, but intentionally overbuilding solar facilities and accepting theyll often need to be dialed down in the absence of sufficient demand may be the best way to keep electricity prices low on a power grid dominated by renewable energy, the research found.

Traditionally, that reserve margin has come from fossil fuels. Overbuilding renewables is a similar concept.

How Are Solar Panels Installed

In a sense, all the research youre doing now is the hardest part of installing solar panels on your home. The time between when you get a quote from a solar energy company to solar panel installation can be anywhere between one and four months. The whole process can be described in six steps:

  • Purchase your solar panel equipment. The two most important pieces of equipment in any residential solar power system are the panels and inverters. Your installer will likely make recommendations about both, but most people find that understanding how solar panels work makes it easier to decide which solar panels are the best for them.

Consider hiring a good electrical engineering consultant to look over the proposed system prior to purchase as well. This will help ensure that you get the right system for your needs.

  • A solar installation engineer will visit your property. After you sign a contract, the first sign of progress in your solar panel installation is meeting an engineer at your home. They will make sure that your roof can support solar panels’ weight and check your circuit breaker or electrical panel. Once an engineer determines that your home is structurally sound enough to support solar panel installation, its time to start filling out forms.
  • Flip the switch. Finally, your local electric company sends a representative to officially connect your new solar panel system to their grid.
  • Solar Ev Charging Station In California

If you already drive an EV or are planning to buy one, solar charging is a great idea in the Golden State.

If you charge your EV with grid power, your utility costs will of course increase and youll put more demand on the grid.

California recently launched an appeal for people not to charge their electric vehicles in peak hours because the power grid is under severe strain and the growth of EV use is accelerating.

It makes sense to use solar for charging, particularly as kWh prices are so high and there are still good incentives in place. It could also save rolling blackouts in the future.

How Much Do Solar Panels Cost

How much do solar panels cost is not as simple a question as it seems to be. The price of a complete solar system takes more into account than just the cost of the solar panel. The panel, the inverter, the method of installation, and the financing can all affect the overall price of the system.

If you are in California, systems built with tier 1 solar panels can range from $2.50 per watt to $4.50 per watt, cash price. Systems costing $2.50 per watt will not include attic runs for conduit, critter guard for birds, main panel upgrades, and all-black solar panels. The high-end pricing should include attic runs and other extras that account for the price differential.

Premium solar loans carry dealer fees that can add 10-25% more to the cash price of a solar system. The prices quoted above do not include financing fees for premium loans with low-interest rates. Find out more about solar financing.

Solar Panel Installation Costs Per Kw

Considering that the average price of labor per watt is $0.50, the following chart reflects the average cost of labor for the various system sizes.

The costs of your system break down into roughly:

    • 49% equipment including solar panels, batteries, inverter, mounting hardware and wiring.
    • 35% Installation permits and labor costs.
    • 18% Operational costs including overhead, maintenance and monitoring.

When you are shopping around, do your research and get multiple quotes. You may be surprised by the difference in offers. This is owed to the significant chunk of soft costs integrated into the overall rate. As you can see above, the other category takes up about a third of your total project budget.

Buyers who explore the market thoroughly could save thousands of dollars on their installation by getting multiple quotes from both large and small installers. Expect a higher budget if the surface of your roof is more difficult to work with.
