How Much Do Solar Panels For House Cost

Cost Of Solar Panels By State

How Much Does a Home Solar Panel System Cost?

There is a wide range in price of solar panels, both in the starting cost for a 6-kilowatt system and cents per kilowatt-hour across the country. Prices can vary greatly from state to state, due in part to the average electricity bill in the area. Hawaii has the highest costs, while Louisiana has the lowest costs. The national average cost is 10.53 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Solar Panel Cost Per Watt

How much solar panels cost to install per Watt will depend on the size of the system and the local rebates.

Solar panel prices per Watt in Australia is $1.04 AUD based on the average price of a 5kWh solar system. If you compare this to $3.40 AUD paid in the USA, its easy to see how much of a good deal you are getting.

Formula: $5,200 divided by 5,000 Watts = $1.04

When you buy larger systems the price per Watt comes down. Kind of like a buy in bulk and save. The reason is the labor cost to install 20 panels is about the same as installing 15, so you are just really paying extra for the panels.

The cost of a 10kWh solar system per Watt is $0.92 AUD.

Solar Panel Lifespan In Relation To Savings

Note that good quality solar panels have a lifespan of at least 25 years. Our solar home system provider gives a 25-year warranty on their solar panels. This information is the final tipping point that led me to dive in and set up a solar home system.

Lets look at our potential bill considering the lifespan of the panels. If we dont have a solar home system, well be paying Meralco 900,000 in the next 25 years. That does not even consider interest rates and inflation.

Year

495,000

Which would you rather pay now? Would you rather pay 100% of your electric bills to a distribution utility provider? Price of electricity from the grid will also fluctuate on a monthly basis and we have no control over it. It will eventually go up because fossil fuel is not infinitely available.

Imported bunker fuel is subject to worldwide demand and at the whims of oil exporting countries. We are slaves to the oil exporting countries if we continue to use oil.

Coal is the biggest generators of electric power in the Philippines but this fuel is a major contributor to global warming and it is also a resource that will eventually become scarce. Coal will eventually be more expensive than solar.

Solar Batteries: Are They Worth The Cost

If youve been looking to install a solar panel system recently, youve probably come across the topic of solar batteries. Despite the fact that battery systems are becoming increasingly popular, many homeowners still dont know a lot about them.

Solar batteries let you store the energy that your solar panels produce for later use. Pairing your solar panels with solar batteries to create what is known as a hybrid solar system comes with a number of advantages, including access to reliable backup power and independence from your utility.

But how exactly do solar batteries work? And more importantly, how much do they cost? Keep reading to find out.

Solar Panel Cost By Manufacturer

How Much Do Solar Panels Cost?

Another way to break down solar panel price data is by the panel brand. The following table was made using data from the EnergySage Marketplace and tracks the average cost of 6 kW and 10 kW solar panel systems by the brand of solar panel used in the installation project.

Table: cost of solar panels by panel manufacturer

Manufacturer
$2.99

NOTE: These ranges are system prices BEFORE the 26 percent federal tax credit for solar.

The price you pay for a solar panel brand is reflective of panel quality to a degree. For example, systems using SunPower panels see the highest average prices , and SunPower is known for producing well-made, high-efficiency products.

Interestingly, there arent that many outliers when it comes to brand pricing, and most manufacturers generally see similar cost ranges. Its important to keep in mind that when comparing system prices based on panel brands, there are so many factors aside from just panel manufacturer that impact the final system price like installer experience, location, racking equipment, inverter brand, and more.

How Long Do Solar Panels Last

Solar panels are surprisingly durable they can last up to 25 years or more with little to no maintenance. Electrons are the only moving part in a solar cell, and they all go back where they came from. In order to maintain optimum output, though, youll want to regularly clean your solar panels and have any damaged panels replaced.

Most solar panel manufacturers predict a degradation rate of about 0.8% every year. After 20 years, solar energy production should be around 84% of the efficiency standard. Typically, residential panels come with a performance warranty that lasts between 10 and 25 years, which may not cover the full life span of your system.

Some crystalline panels have been known to function at relatively high efficiency for 40 years. Panels can even withstand wind speeds of up to 140 miles per hour, according to EnergySage. Coverage for solar panels is also included in most homeowners insurance policies to protect against damages.

Solar PV inverters and batteries dont last as long. Its likely that you will have to replace both within your systems life span. Solar PV inverters can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years. You can expect a good solar battery to last between eight and 15 years.

Like panels, battery and inverter performance can also decline over time. As you compare solar equipment, look for brands that include a warranty and performance guarantee.

Things To Consider With Solar Panels

Calculate your sun exposure, costs and savings. In some parts of the country, solar panels will save more money and add more value to your home than in others. For example, someone in Seattle might not get the same value from solar panels as someone in Phoenix because of the disparity in sunshine.

To estimate your savings, you first need to know how many kilowatt-hours you use and how much youre paying for them. The average household pays about 13 cents per kilowatt-hour for 877 kilowatt-hours each month, according to 2019 data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Then, figure out what size system youll need. You can use the Solar-Estimate calculator to see how many panels your home would need and how much energy they would generate.

Theres More To The Solar Cost Story

Its great that weve arrived at the average cost of a solar system installation but as you may have guessed, there are many different factors that influence what the cost of solar would be for you.

Size of Your Solar System

5kW is the average size of a solar system, but many people choose to install bigger systems. A bigger system means more energy production and more energy savings over time. Some popular sizes are 6kW, 10kW and 15kW. Of course, it really depends on what your energy needs are. If you have 1500 square foot house and few appliances, your energy needs will be much different than someone who has a 3,000 square foot house with a hot tub!

The best thing you can do is run a simple analysis on your energy bill. How much energy do you use? Take that and you can easily decide what the size of your residential solar system should be.

Where You Live

The cost of solar installations varies from state to state, however the price of solar is actually fairly steady across the board. Almost all states tend to fall within 50 cents of the $2.96/watt average we discussed earlier.

Where you live certainly affects your solar savings but that is a topic for our aforementioned solar savings page.

How Much Do Solar Panels Cost? – Cost of Solar Panels in 2021 Explanation

A solar home system is definitely cheaper to own in the long term. The power from a solar home system is not subject to manipulation by a foreign entity, or your government or supply and demand, because the sun will always be there albeit with occasional cloud cover but it will always be there. It is a highly recommended investment.

Roof Shade / Access To Consistent Sunlight

plenty

This one is less obvious than you think. Just because its daylight doesnt mean your solar panels receive the same sunlight you received yesterday or the day before. And just because you live in the Southwest, it doesnt mean your home will automatically be a good candidate for solar panels. You must account for the amount of coverage your roof receives on a regular basis, whether from trees, nearby buildings, or other types of blockages.

Review Your Electric Bill

Solar panels generate their own power and can therefore greatly offset your monthly electricity bill, if not eliminate it. The higher your bill, the more likely you’ll benefit from switching. But you should note that electricity rates and usage the main charges on your statement are volatile.

“If a utilitys electricity prices fluctuate, so could the amount of savings,” says Garrett Nilsen, deputy director for the U.S. Department of Energy’s solar energy technologies office. “Similarly, if energy consumption changes, the amount of savings can also vary.”

How Much Do Solar Panels Cost For A 2500 Square Foot House

For a 2500 square feet house, installation of monocrystalline panels would cost between $17,000 and $36,400.

According to the Energy Information Administration , a house in the United States sizing around 2,500 square feet requires around 12,280 kWh annually, or 1,023 kWh per month.

It further adds if that house has ample roof space such that there is no shading during the day, it would need between 17 and 26 premium solar panels to produce required electricity.

Here, premium refers to a solar panels which has output wattage rating of about 400 watts . If we go with previous per kilowatt price , then installation cost range can be determined as follows

17 panels * 400 kW per panel * 2.5 dollars per Watt = $17000

26 panels * 400 kW per panel * 3.5 dollars per Watt = $36400

So it can be said that installation cost of solar panels for a 2500 square feet house can range between $17,000 and $36,400. Average cost, thus, comes out to be / 2 = $26,700.

How Much Do Solar Panels Cost? â Home Improvementer

The SolarReviews Editorial team believes a fair price for a professionally-installed solar system in 2021 is between $2.60 per watt and $3.20 per watt.

If you are being charged more than that, there are probably better offers available. However, if you are paying less than $2.60 per watt, you may run the risk of getting a low-quality installation or sub-par customer service. Not only that, solar companies that charge such low prices probably wont be able to earn enough money off of their sales to offer you the customer support you need for the 25-year lifespan of your solar panels.

Above all, you want to go with a solar company that has a good reputation and will be around for the long haul.
