Tesla Solar Panel Options

Teslas minimalistic solar shingles stand out in the solar industry. These smaller panels with no visible grid can replicate the aesthetic of roof shingles for a low profile. When the panels are interlocked, they mimic the look of a standard roof.

The company also offers monocrystalline solar panel systems. It makes the process simple through its standardized sizes: small , medium , large and extra-large . Monocrystalline solar panels are the most efficient panels on the market. Teslas panels produce 425 watts and feature an average efficiency rate of 19.6%. Its panels are also durable as they operate from minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit to 185 degrees Fahrenheit.

Tesla also offers energy storage and an alternative solar power generator with its battery storage, the Tesla Powerwall. The Powerwall solar battery collects energy that your solar panels generate and stores it. This energy storage device provides backup power for your home during nighttime, low sunlight weather and power outages.

Standalone Home Energy Monitors

There are several solutions for solar monitoring provided by companies that dont make solar equipment or install solar panels.

These solutions from companies like Sense, Curb, and Emporia have additional features that allow you to monitor energy usage in a much more granular way than solar-specific monitoring does.

Sense Monitor

Unlike rooftop hardware solutions that are tied into each solar module in an array, Sense provides add-on monitoring functionality for systems without a current monitoring solution. The Sense energy monitor itself tracks home energy consumption – even for folks without solar panels – by using AI device profiles to show where energy is being used within a home at any given time.

In order to monitor solar production, the Sense monitor must be connected to an additional two current sensors that clamp onto the wires coming from a solar inverter into your homes main panel. Once installed and turned on, the Sense monitor immediately begins recording power flows into the home from the solar array and out to the appliances.

The Sense energy monitor app shows solar production compared to energy being used by your appliances.

The Sense monitoring system also records excess power sent to the grid from your solar panels, so that over time you can get an accurate record of renewable energy production, consumption, and grid export.

Best Solar Monitoring Systems For 2022

Solar panels sit on your roof for decades, silently making electricity from the sun, saving you money and saving the planet a little bit each day. Unfortunately, theyre also silent when theyre not making electricity due to a wiring problem. To make sure your system is working properly, you need a way to check up on them.

Heres our look at the best solar monitoring systems on the market. If you havent yet installed solar panels, this may determine your choice between installers, based on what solution they use. If you already have a solar installation but have no way to monitor it, this guide can help you choose a solution thats right for you.

The Tesla Powerwall 2 For Businesses

Tesla Powerwall Monitoring app Configuration and Review

We are seeing an increased demand from businesses looking to incorporate solar arrays and Tesla Powerwalls to reduce their electricity bills. Implementing battery storage solutions for businesses can be complicated, and we’d only recommend it in certain circumstances. We don’t want to sell you a battery storage system that won’t be fully utilised. Solar PV combined with Tesla Powerwalls are great for businesses where:

  • Evening consumption is greater than the daytime, such as hotels, or if you are the owner/operator of housing blocks. This means there’s lots of unused power in the day which can then be used at night.
  • Where the solar array generates a large excess of power . This ensures there’s excess electricity that can be captured all year round
  • Or where there’s a big difference between the day and night price of electricity. This allows cheap night-time electricity to be stored and used to offset expensive imported electricity.

We do not recommend installing solar PV combined with Tesla Powerwalls for businesses where:

  • Daytime load is high, and/or solar generation is low. You’d capture some solar at midday on the sunniest days of the year, but for the rest of the year there wouldn’t be enough excess solar to charge the batteries.

Our engineers can model this for you to see if this is a viable option for your property. Contact our commercial design team to find out more.

What Is A Powerwall

The Tesla Powerwall 2 is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery storage system, primarily designed to be used with a solar PV system. It stores excess electricity which can then be used when the sun isn’t shining i.e. overnight or on days with poor weather. This stored electricity can then be used to power the building once the sun has gone down, when there is poor weather or even during power cuts .

The Tesla Powerwall 2 can be used in virtually any building with a solar PV system, whether that’s a home, a commercial or a public building. It works best when there is plenty of excess day-time solar electricity that would otherwise be exported back to the grid.

The previous generation of this system was called the Tesla Powerwall, which had a smaller battery capacity and fewer features. Details of a forthcoming Powerwall 3 are yet to be announced by Tesla.

Setting Backup Reserve For Grid Outages

With Backup Reserve, your Powerwall provides stored energy protection during a grid outage. To adjust your reserve percentage, go to the Settings screen and adjust the slider at the top of the screen. The left-side percentage is how much energy you are saving for grid outages. The right-side percentage is allocated to your Powerwall when Self-Powered or Time-Based Control mode is selected.

While a reserve percentage of 20% is recommended, consider your personal economic needs and energy security outlook when setting Backup Reserve. In the event of a grid outage, your Powerwall will always provide backup protection to your home with all the energy that it has available not just the amount of energy that you have set as your reserve percentage.

Note: If you set Backup Reserve to 100%, there will be no energy allocated to the selected Powerwall control mode, and your Powerwall will only provide protection during an outage. You can change control modes at any time based on your preferred energy usage.

Tesla Solar Installation And Services

Tesla handles every part of your solar systems installation, from site inspection to Permission to Operate . Learn about the installation process with Tesla here:

  • Site inspection: Tesla surveys your home and roof using remote aerial technology to measure its area and slope. You will work with the company at this time to determine the solar system size required to power your home.
  • Design and permitting: A couple of steps occur before the installation. Tesla designs your system to fit your homes structure and energy needs and works with any local institution, such as a utility commission, to obtain all necessary permits and paperwork.
  • Installation: Once everything is prepared, you schedule an installation date with Tesla. You will have to be present at your house for the first hour of the installation process. The company claims it can finish the installation of its systems in one day. If you also ordered a home battery, your system will be activated and configured to produce only enough energy required to power your home and charge your Powerwall.
  • Inspection: Tesla works with your local building department to arrange an inspection. This inspection ensures that the installed system meets all building codes and safety regulations.
  • Activation: Once Tesla completes all the necessary paperwork with your local government, it receives a PTO notice for your system. Tesla claims this process may take anywhere between one and six weeks.

    Tesla Energy Mobile App

Following the acquisition of SolarCity, Tesla started to integrate features for Powerwall and solar customers to its mobile app, which was originally only for vehicle owners.

It enables users to easily see where the electricity powering their home is coming from: grid, solar installation, or Powerwall.

Tesla has been gradually updating the app for Tesla Energy customers with new features. This includes a new Storm Watch feature to auto-detect storms and prepare for them by storing energy.

However, some customers complained that they didnt have access to as much data as they had under SolarCity.

When we reported on Teslas plan to add more access to data last month, SolarCity solar panel and Powerwall owner Harvey Payne commented on Electrek:

I have been downloading my production numbers since we first got solar and was quite upset when I learned the solarcity web access was going away. I run the data through custom python scripts I wrote and store the data in my own database for further analysis. Using these and data downloaded from my energy provider I can determine to the penny how much my PV system is saving me and know when it has paid itself off. With the current Tesla app and no website, this is impossible. I look forward to being able to download my battery data as well as my solar and grid provided data.

Previously, Powerwall owners were limited to only the data from the current and previous day.

Types Of Solar Panel Monitoring Systems

There are three main types of solar monitoring systems:

    • Solar monitoring from equipment manufacturers
    • Solar monitoring from your installer
    • Standalone home energy monitors

Each of these solutions uses hardware installed either on each solar panel or alongside a solar string inverter to record power flow, as well as software to keep a record of the flow over time – all while providing you with an interface to look up all the necessary data about your solar installation.

To make everything work together, you need the appropriate hardware, an internet connection, and a mobile app or login to a web portal.
