There is a misconception that solar panels dont function on cloudy days. This is wrong, as solar radiation can still penetrate clouds to reach the earth surface. However, the efficiency of a solar panel depends on the amount of sunlight penetrating the cloud and reaching the panel.

There is usually a drop in efficiency between cloudy days and sunny days of up to 65%, depending on the quality of the solar panel and the cloud cover.

How Many Watts Do I Need

The watts required to allow a device to work is calculated in most cases by using a simple formula:

Volts X Amps = Watts

An example of this is an item that requires 240 volts and 0.5 amps will require 120watts.

It is vital to understand the power consumption of individual pieces of equipment to balance what can be run and for how long.

My laptop uses 30W so it is possible to run this for 10 hours and nothing else. Alternatively, I can run the laptop for 6 hours my router also for 6 hours, charge my cell phone for 2 hours, and only use 450W leaving power for something else.

This means that when your solar panel doesnt get peak sunshine, it produces less than 100 watts. To check how many peak sun hours you get, you can see how much sunlight each state receives and calculate the amount of power your solar panel will produce depending on where you live.

Do I Need Batteries To Run A Refrigerator

Understanding the 100

Yes you need a battery â or several of them- to power a refrigerator. How many depends on the power consumption of your refrigerator and how long you need to run it.

A 200ah 12V lithium battery can run a refrigerator for 24 hours. At the end of 24 hours the battery will be fully discharged. You can recharge it with solar panels, a generator or any other power source. You will need a bigger battery bank to keep the refrigerator going for a few days.

here is scenario: in case of power outage you want to be able to keep the refrigerator going for 3 days. How many batteries and solar panels will you need?

Assume the fridge has a 0.5 duty cycle and the motor needs 2 times the running watts. The fridge consumes 500 watts an hour so the surge capacity is 1500 watts.

Watts / volts = amps

1650 12V = 125

You need a 12V 125ah battery to run the fridge for 24 hours. So for three days that would be 375ah.

Charge Controllers: Mppt Vs Pwm

MPPT is a technique used with variable power sources to optimize energy extraction under all circumstances.

With PWM, an electrical signal’s average power is reduced by breaking it up into discrete portions.

The most significant distinction between these two is that the PWM charge controller can waste up to 15% of solar energy.

MPPT charge controllers are highly efficient than traditional charge controllers, but they are also more expensive.

It’s a matter of personal preference, although MPPT controllers are commonly employed in large solar arrays.

A PWM controller is generally sufficient for tiny systems.

We are working with the 100W or 8.3 amps in this scenario.

Thus, PWM should be sufficient.

However, if you intend to connect numerous 100W Solar Panels in series, an MPPT controller is a good idea.

The lesser the solar energy losses must be, the more power you require.

The 15% power loss from the PWM controllers are going to add up as the system grows larger.

A PWM controller’s current output cannot be limited.

There is no simple answer to this question. 100w solar panels tend to also be 12v, and they are smaller than most conventional models. This is because of their common uses on things like boats and motorhomes. However, this does not mean you should expect a 100w solar panel to be cheap.

The prices actually vary quite a lot, with some of the lowest priced models starting at around £250, and the highest priced models ranging all the way up to over £1100. It all depends on where you go and the kind of quality you are expecting. Usually, you will get a lot more for your money when you spend a little extra. The number of batteries you can charge with a 100w solar module will depend on:

  • the capacity of the battery,
  • the amount of sunlight you get for the panel
  • how quick you want the battery charged
  • and other environmental issues.

You can potentially charge as many batteries as you wish with a panel of this size.

Just that the charging time will vary based on your batterys ratings.

The higher the batterys capacity, the longer it will take you to fully charge it.

Lets assume you can get say 6 hours of sunlight a day, and you want to charge a 12v lead-acid battery with this module:

In this case, your panel will be able to produce 100w/12v= 8.33 amps an hour.

But in the real world, you are likely to get only 70% of that. That is 5.831 amp

Multiply this by your state peak sun hours to get the capacity of the battery you can charge a day with this panel,

6h * 5.831a= 34.986 ah.

Your panel can therefore potentially charge a 35 ah 12v lead-acid battery in this scenario in a day.

How Many Amps Does A 100 Watt Solar Panel Produce

A 100 watt solar panel has an open circuit voltage of about 21 volt, short circuit current of about 9.9 amps. The point at which the power output is maximum is when the voltage is 18.5 volts and the current is about 5.4 amps this is the maximum amps that a the panel produces. It this combination is called the Maximum Power Point .

For a single solar panel , an MPPT controller may supply more than I max @18.5 volts, as it cleverly adjusts the current upwards as it winds the voltage down to that required by the battery on charge. In this way its always ensuring the solar panel is operating at its maximum efficiency.

MPPT controllers really come into their own when solar panels with higher voltages are connected, or when two or more 12 volt solar panels are connected in series to double the voltage to 24.

You could if you wanted to, but it wouldnt make financial sense.

So a 100 watt solar panel is not enough to run a typical kitchen refrigerator. For a 12V portable camping fridge yes, but how many panels would you need to run a standard home refrigerator for 24 hours?

Refrigerator kwh per day / solar panel output per day = number of solar panels needed

Imagine you have a refrigerator that consumes 1.13kwh a day.

1.13 kwh is 1130 watts. Assuming there are 5 hours of sunlight and our 100 watt solar panel produces 100 watts an hour, we get:

1130 / 100 = 11.3

We need 11.3 or rounded off, 12 x 100 watt solar panels to generate enough power to run the refrigerator. But even if you could install a dozen panels it will not work. Why?

Solar panels cannot run a refrigerator for 24 hours because they do not produce energy at night. What you need to do is charge a battery with the solar panels and run the fridge off the battery.

Solar Panels For Commercial Businesses

For businesses, solar panels might represent an environmental good or a financial strategy.

Whatever the reason could be, solar panels are a great move for all sizes of businesses.

An average home fits its energy needs with systems of around 6 kW or 7 kW. Businesses will require larger systems. In this case, expect to occupy a larger rooftop surface to cover your companys energy needs.

If you install a 6 kW system with, say, 20 average-sized solar panels, expect to occupy a surface of 27 ft. wide by 13 ft. long on your rooftop.
