Solar Panels To Charge Electric Car

How Much Does It Cost To Charge An Electric Vehicle

The cheap solar-powered car you might NEVER need to charge | SONO SION

The energy produced by home solar panels can be used to charge an EV at no additional cost. Accounting for hourly rates and fees, the cost of charging at a public station could be as high as seventy-nine cents per kWh, which really adds up!

EV charging at a public station $0.29 $0.79/kWh
EV charging with home solar panels $0.08 $0.15 cents/kWh LcOE

Use power generated by your solar system to fully charge your EV within hours and save upwards of $1,000 a year in fuel costs.

Couldnt I Just Hardwire The Solar Panels Into My Evs Battery Bank

Wouldnt that be nice? Maybe someday, but for now we dont know of any EV brand that makes an adapter to go from solar directly into the cars onboard charging system. That said, we hope someones working on a solution. Even so, as the math above shows, the gains from even a 1000W solar system would be trivial.

Solar Panels Solar Battery Storage And Your Ev

When thinking about the intersection between your EV, solar panels, and battery storage, you should first consider how you plan to use your electric vehicle. If you work away from home during daylight hours, the car can’t be plugged in and charging at home, so you may need to consider a solar storage battery. Without a battery to store the solar energy produced during the day, the energy you use to charge your EV at night will come from your utility, and will likely be sourced from fossil fuels.

However, you may not need a solar battery if net metering is available in your area. With net metering, your utility company credits your account for the excess solar power you send back to the electricity grid during the day. You can then use those credits at night to offset the cost of charging your EV when the solar panels aren’t producing electricity.

If you live in an area with TOU rates, you can also use smart chargers to only charge your electric vehicle when the rates are lowest. This smart charging feature is built into some EVs, while others can accomplish the same goal with an EV charger upgrade.

How Many Solar Panels Would It Take To Charge A Tesla

SUNER POWER 12V Solar Car Battery Charger & Maintainer

As pointed out above, the number of panels needed for charging your electric vehicle will depend on the size of your vehicles battery. However, to consider this question, well use the standard Tesla Model S as a baseline for estimates. This Tesla has a battery with a 75-kWh capacity. Your specific needs for your particular car may be different from this, but you can find that information on your manufacturers website.

To figure out how many panels you need to charge your EV, you have to know the amount of power each of your solar panels can produce. If you dont already have panels, Ill save you some time SunPower panels are the highest efficiency.

The average 250 W solar panel can generate around30-40 kWh of AC power each month. Lets make use of the lower number in our calculations.

Given that single, low output solar panel producesroughly 1 kWh per day of electrical power this indicates that you need toinstall as many as 75 solar panels to generate electricity to power your TeslaModel S each day assuming that you start the charging process with a batterytotally drained of electricity.

However, since the average driver will travelapproximately 37 miles a day this translates to roughly 12 kWh ofelectricity. With that in mind, a much more realistic set would requireapproximately 12 solar panels. Also, even this is a conservative estimatethats based on the use of low output solar panels.

The Power Of Solar Radiation Is About 1000w / M2

This energy of 1000W / m2 is available only when the sun is perfectly aligned with the solar panels. With south-facing panels, this condition only occurs at noon on a sunny day . So, although the days are much longer than this, we can only rely on the equivalent of about 5 hours of full sunshine per day, during the longest days of the year.

Is There A Portable Charger For Electric Cars

Yes, there are portable chargers for electric cars. They usually plug into an outlet at home to fill. Then, you can take them with you in the trunk of your vehicle.

These portable charging options are mainly for emergency purposes. Theyll extend the range of your car by somewhere between ten and forty miles, maybe a little more, but arent for regular use.

Alternatively, a few companies are launching charging as a service models in the next year or two. Some of these work like AAA roadside assistance, but for portable charging. You pay a subscription fee, and they, in turn, promise to provide a portable charger when you need it.

Others promise to use robotics to offer portable charging within parking garages. Unfortunately, both options still have some issues to work through, and neither is widely available.

    Solar Panels And Ev Chargers

Before combining technology, it is important to know how both parts work. Solar power has been around for a while now, so most people are familiar with how a solar panel system functions. Essentially, one or more panels are affixed to the roof of your home or another surface that receives a lot of sunlight. However, these panels only generate electricity and cannot store it. This means it has to be used immediately or stored in a solar battery.

On the other hand, EV chargers are an essential piece of equipment if you plan to own an electric car. Sure, you could rely purely on public charging stations, but these are more expensive and less convenient to access. Luckily, chargers arent overly expensive and can connect to a standard household outlet. There is also the option to upgrade to a faster Level 2 charging unit, though it requires additional equipment and specialized cables to be installed at your home or place of work.

Youre not alone in eyeballing that new Ford F150 Lightning or Rivian R1T as a potential overland truck. Or the Ford Transit Electric as a custom camper van. How nice would it be to ditch the constraints of gasoline, not to mention the pollution and expense, and just escape off grid?

The trick, of course, is battery life. So, we wondered, is it possible to charge an electric vehicle off of solar panels?

The simple answer is, yes, you could charge an EV from onboard solar panels.

The real answer is, no, its not practical yet, because math. It would simply take too long to charge up your camper van or overland truck to the point where it could drive any useful distance. But why? What would it take? And how far off are we? Lets find out

Disclaimer: I am an amateur mathematician and electrician at best, but I had smarter people fact check this story, and for all practical purposes, it accurately explains the concept.

How Much Does It Cost To Charge An Electric Car With Solar And Without

When you own an electric vehicle, every outlet is potentially a way to get a few more miles into your cars batteries. Realistically, though, youll want to find a level 2 EV charger for home use, or the equivalent of a Tesla supercharger if youre out on the road.

There are basically three ways to get the juice thatll keep your car on the road: the grid, public charging stations, or your own solar panels.

    Heres how much each costs:

    Type of charging
$.10 to $40 per kWh Varies based on location and time cheapest at night cost increases over time
Public charging stations $.28 to $.69 per kWh Varies based on location and charging station owner additional idle fees some require monthly subscription cost increases over time
Solar power at home Less than $.11/kWh Levelized over the course of the solar panels’ lifetime additional solar energy can be used to offset electricity bill

The ongoing cost of fuel from the grid is whatever you currently pay for a kilowatt-hour . In the United States, that can be between about $.10 and $.40 depending on where you live, but the average is about $.13/kWh. For every kWh in your battery, youll get about 3-4 miles of range, so about 12 kWh will get you a 40-mile round trip every day, at an average cost of $1.56.

Does Sdg& e Provide Electric Utility Plans For Evs Using Home Solar Power

Yes, SDG& E EV Time-of-Use pricing plans are specifically designed for homes with one or more Electric Vehicles .

Most commonly, EVs are charged at home during the evening hours when its dark and no solar energy is generated.

If the home does not have solar batteries to store energy at night, then that home will use utility grid electricity to charge the EV.

SDG& Es EV Time-of-Use pricing plans have lower rates during the late evening hours than during the day. This lets you charge your EVs for less while you sleep.

They currently offer two electric vehicle utility rate plans EV-TOU-2 and EV-TOU-5. Each provides electric rate savings during off-peak times of the day, plus super savings on weekends and holidays.

The EV-TOU-5 offers lower electric rates but has a higher monthly fee.

SDG& E offers a calculator to determine which plan is best for your EV and usage.

How Many Solar Panels You Need To Charge Your Electric Car

120w 12v MPPT Solar Battery Charger Vehicle Kit. Money Back Guarantee ...

Based on the table above, youll need between around 10 and 17 kWh of electricity per day to charge an electric car. Now its time to figure out how many solar panels youll need to make that much electricity.

The average modern solar panel can put out around 350 watts under full sun, and gets between 3 and 7 peak sun hours per day, depending on where you live. That means our solar panel makes between 1.05 to 2.45 kWh of electricity every day .

Lets say you get 1.75 kWh per day, per panel. Youd need just over five panels to make enough energy to charge a Tesla Model 3 battery and get 40 miles of range. Thats not very many! Of course, the number of panels increases if you need more than a 40-mile range.

Using the same math, you can determine that youll need about seven 350-watt panels to charge a Nissan Leaf. On the high side, youd need 10 panels to make enough energy to drive 40 miles in a Porsche Taycan 4S. Clearly, that is a car that doesnt sip the sun juice.

    Capacity Of Portable Solar Chargers

A solar charger is usually a combined system consisting of portable solar panels, a converter, and batteries. Here, the batteries cannot be charged directly from the solar panels, although portable solar chargers come with an attached solar panel, which is primarily small and compact. Therefore, these kinds of portable solar chargers are usually a perfect fit for mobiles, laptops, tablets, and any other small electronic device. These portable solar chargers are designed to be used outdoors, when one is not close to the utility grid.

However, the battery power and the power absorption capacity of the same are not so high. Thus, portable solar chargers are not likely to be a good choice for charging an electric car like Tesla Model X, and their capability is standard for small and medium applications.

How Many Solar Panels Do You Need For Evs

Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in the U.S. and around the world for their environmental and performance benefits as manufacturers launch plug-in EV models across their fleets. And whether you own an EV or are interested in purchasing one, theres a fair chance youll be in the market for a home charging port for your EV battery as well.

There are fewer public charging stations on the road than traditional gas stations. As such, its reasonable to want to buy one that is readily available for use at your residence. Its convenient and, in some cases, necessary.

Most home charging ports source energy from the electric grid. However, its possible and much more sustainable to source energy from solar panels instead. Attaching solar panels to your EV charging port at home will save you significant money since some EVs require a large amount of electricity to fully charge.

Here well take a look at how different types of EV batteries , as well as your solar panels efficiency, determine the number of panels youll need to charge your car.
