How Do I Keep My Gravel Driveway Clean

Follow these steps to keep your gravel driveway looking brand new:
Remove leaves off the driveway. This is especially important if there are overhanging trees in the vicinity of your driveway.
Rake the surface Some light raking of the surface will be required to keep your gravel driveway smooth and level. Pay particular attention to areas where the car wheels turn and pass often or that experience regular foot traffic.
Monitor and repair potholes IMMEDIATELY Over time and with regular traffic potholes could form in your gravel driveway. Once a pothole forms, they fill with rainwater and further erosion will occur, deepening the pothole.
Repair erosion in the surface layer of the gravel simply by raking it back level. If its deeper and into the base layer, you may need to add some stone, compact it and then add more gravel on top. You should be able to prevent these deeper potholes with some regular upkeep and raking.

Dig The Area For Your Gravel Driveway

How To Bind A Driveway With Loose Stones
To keep gravel and loose stones in your driveway in place, you must control the water flow. When water does not drain properly from your road, it displaces the stones and causes erosion. It’s a good idea to fix your gravel road before wet weather arrives. One of the drawbacks of a gravel driveway is that it must be regularly maintained.

Clear your gravel driveway of all organic material such as dead tree branches, leaves, weeds and mud before doing anything else. These items get in the way of compacting or binding your driveway.

Verify that your driveway has good drainage and remove any material built up inside the drainage ditch. Use a shovel to change the slope of the road where water damage has displaced the gravel. Ensure that the road slopes toward the bank and drainage ditch on the low side of the road. If the road does not have a drainage ditch, dig one to permit water to drain from the road properly.

Repair the low spots in the road. Gravel driveways can get low spots where overhanging branches from trees drip water during storms and car tires run through these spots. Dig out potholes and fill the hole with pea-sized gravel. Compact the gravel in place in the low spots before compacting the entire driveway.

How Do You Plow A Gravel Driveway
Set the snowplow up with shoes set about half an inch above the ground. First plow the middle of the driveway, then work up and down alongside your initial line, rolling snow off to the side. Avoid creating large banks on the sides of the driveway, which can become harder to move with each snowfall. Leave about an inch of snow on the driveway it will provide a good driving surface and prevent the plow from disturbing the gravel. Your tires will still get plenty of traction from the gravel with an inch of snow on top.
What To Use To Harden Up A Gravel Driveway
I have a gravel driveway uphill. I put new 1/2″ rock gravel in last fall because of washout. I also spread concrete and sprayed it, but it didn’t take. I have a 05 Harley Davidson Road King custom that I can’t get up or down the driveway without almost dumping it.
Can I put anything on it to harden it up enough to get my bike up and down? It’s too long to cement or asphalt it.

What shape is the gravel? Go look at railroad ballast, you want that stuff, aka “crushed stone”, very jaggy and will interlock when tamped down. Very hard to shovel for that reason. You want a smaller size though.
Any sort of round or half-round pea gravel type stuff has to go. Get a loader, shovel it outta there, save it for aggregate for concrete.
The difference is night and day.

Consider a gravel driveway if you want to set your house back from the road. Gravel is an affordable option that gives your property some country curb appeal.
There are so many fun decisions to make when you buy raw land. Its exciting to think about where youll build your home and maybe even where youll put in a garden.
If youre like many country folks, you probably want some distance between your home site and the road. Maybe you want a prettier view from your office or you want your kids to be able to play outside safely.
Whatever the reason, a long driveway might be on the wish list. But what about the logistics and costs involved?
While asphalt and concrete are common driveway materials in cities and suburbs, they might not be the best fit for longer country driveways. Asphalt materials cost on average $2 to $5 per square foot. Concrete ranges from $5 to $6 per square foot. Gravel is much more affordable, with average material costs of $1 to $3 per square foot. You can imagine how these costs add up when youre planning a long country driveway.
Gravel driveways are also the longest lasting with an average lifespan of 100 years. Asphalt lasts about 12 to 20 years and concrete about 25 to 50 years before they need to be replaced.
All driveways require upkeep. Concrete and asphalt need to be sealed regularly, and cracks may develop which need to be repaired by the experts.

How Often Should You Re Gravel A Driveway
Youll probably need to add new gravel every two to four years or so when maintaining your gravel driveway. You should also re-grade the driveway with a tractor and a grading blade once or twice a year to reset the crown by moving gravel from the sides to the center. Expect about one inch of crown per three or four feet of your driveways width.
How To Solidify A Gravel Driveway
If you already have a gravel driveway, then you already have all of the requisite materials in place. All you need at this stage is something to compact your gravel into a firm, stable layer.
You can potentially do this with your own car, but unless you own a particularly heavy vehicle youre probably going to want to use a road roller to get this done. Fortunately, there are plenty of places that will let you rent a road roller for personal use.
With that said, heres the process for making a gravel driveway solid:

Which Gravel To Use
When installing a gravel driveway, youll actually use three sizes of gravel. The first layer of gravel should consist of baseball size rocks, which are often called #3 stones. These rocks form a strong foundation for your driveway and ensure good drainage. This foundation layer also keeps the smaller rock from disappearing into the soil. Youll install approximately a 4 inch layer of this rock.
On top of the base, youll install another 3 to 4 inches of golf ball-size rocks, often identified as #57 rocks. These smaller rocks form a similar function and help make the transition to the top layer.
The top layer of gravel consists of 4 inches of marble-size rocks. These rocks can vary in color from black to gray to rust, depending on the type of stone.
For each layer of gravel, youll want machine crushed stone, rather than round rock. These rocks have an angular, triangle shape and will lock together on the driveway. Round rock slips, creating an unstable surface. River rock, for example, is not appropriate for a driveway.
When choosing rock for the top layer, choose traffic bound or dense-grade gravel. This rock has rock dust and smaller pieces of rock added to the mixture. This dust forms a cement-like bond when compacted.
Top layer choices for gravel driveways might include crushed shale, limestone, granite and concrete, along with other types of gravel in various colors to meet your aesthetic needs.

Hardpan, the layer beneath topsoil, is, as the name implies, dense and hard. It creates a much better foundation for your driveway.
Some people apply an herbicide at this point, while others install landscaping fabric. Think about how you want to address weed control.
Proper grading is also critical to the success of your driveway. Gravel driveways need a crown so water drains quickly. A crown simply means that the middle of the driveway is slightly higher than the sides. If you live in an area that gets a lot of rain or snow, you should install ditches on either side of the driveway to carry water away.
Once you start laying the gravel, you must compact each layer with a rolling machine before applying the next layer. If all this seems like a lot of work, consider hiring a professional. Installing a gravel driveway is a big task for the average homeowner, but a professional with the right equipment can complete the job in a few days.
