How Much Solar Power For Tiny House

How Much Energy Is Needed To Power A Tiny House

Tiny House Power Usage (Finding How Many Solar Panels You Need)

First, you need to use this handy calculator to figure out how much electricity you use. You can also use this chart to determine your appliance energy needs. Whether you are only charging phones or planning on using the full spectrum of kitchen appliances, you will want to design your tiny house for the amount of power youre planning to use.

Next, lets consider the battery size. If your battery is too small, you risk over charging and increase the possibility of a reduced battery life. Too large a battery and you could struggle to keep it charged, therefore affecting its overall capacity.

Now its time to take a look at the numbers from the energy calculator with the help of the appliance chart. This is an important step in designing your dream tiny home.. By calculating how much energy an appliance uses with how often you plan on using it, you can determine the size of the battery. In short, the amount of appliances you use and how often you use them directly affects your energy usage.

Do I need a tv? Do I need a coffee machine? Do I need to power my tiny house as a remote work space? These are all questions you need to ask yourself before considering energy capacity.

How Much Solar Power Do I Need For A Tiny House

The easiest way to work out how much solar power you need for your tiny house is to buy a cheap power monitor. This can tell you how much power youre consuming using real-time data. Use these figures to work out how much energy you need to produce on a daily basis as well as what size inverter you need. Most tiny houses require between 3 and 4 KWs per day, but it will all depend on the kind of appliances you have and how often you use them. Things like LED lights, mini-split heating and cooling systems, and on-demand hot water heaters will help keep power consumption down.

Solar Battery Storage And Solar Panels

The most important aspect of a solar generatorâs actual usability is its battery storage capacity. Battery storage allows you to use the generator at night, in periods of limited sun and when your energy needs exceed the amount of solar input coming in.

Solar PV input is what powers a solar generator. Having ample solar PV input allows for continuous solar generator usage during the day and low recharging times after night usage.

Inverters convert low volt DC to standard 120 volt AC power. This allows you to easily use the power that comes in from PV panels for a variety of power applications. Inverter chargers also grant the ability to externally charge your battery bank by plugging it into the grid or gas generator and routing the incoming AC power to the batteries in DC form.

For Tiny Homeowners, it is easy to figure out how many average sun hours you get , which then, combined with available battery storage capacity, determines how much solar power you have to work with. Owners may need some backup power if they get a lot of cloudy days or have higher energy needs than allocated with their solar power system. In this case, the solar generators can be easily paired with a gas or diesel generator to ensure you have 24/7 power availability, with significantly reduced fuel usage. This is the ultimate off-grid power system.

Living It Up On The High Seas

Is Solar Power Expensive for a Tiny Houses?

As with RVing trends, many people are discovering the joys of heading out into open waters, and some are even moving into their floating homes.

Solar panel installations provide boaters with a consistent, readily available energy source for operating the electrical components of their vessels.

How are solar panels used on a boat?

They keep the boat batteries charged and keep electrical gadgets and appliances running, and theyre much quieter than a generator.

If you own a boat, installing a solar system reduces your need for gasoline.

Solar panels virtually eliminate the need to burn gas for sailboat owners, allowing boaters to spend more time out on the high seas before returning to shore.

How To Calculate Your Tiny House’s Solar Power Requirements

Ultimately it all boils down to your power consumption. Not every tiny home is going to be consuming the same amount of energy. A tiny house with a propane stove and heater running a few lights and a ceiling fan will have lower energy requirements than a home that has power-hungry appliances like an electric stove and refrigerator.

An online solar power calculator can help you convert your current electricity load into a solar power system, giving you a rough idea of how many solar panels you need based on the capacity or wattage of one solar panel your required kWH for the month.

There Are State And Local Incentives Too

A perfect example is California, home to over 1.2 million solar installations. The Golden State has always had the most solar panel systems installed throughout the US. After all, the state has a bevy of solar programs, such as local permit rebates and net metering.

Another example is Richmond, VA. According to , the city has local solar rebates, too. For starters, tiny house owners can sign up for net metering offered by utility providers.

Many other states and municipalities run these offers, so be sure to check them out. Your tiny house may qualify for more than just the federal tax break.

The Price Of Electricity

Factoring In The Costs Of Financing

Another key consideration for homeowners like you is the cost of any financing you may need. Not everyone has $10,000 or $20,000 kicking around to put in a solar panel system.

If you need to take out a loan, you should factor the costs of borrowing money into the cost of your system.

Shop around for the best possible terms, such as a lower interest rate. This can help you keep the costs of your new solar panels in check.

You should also talk to solar panel installers about the incentives they offer. Some may be able to provide you with better financing terms. Others may be able to offer you a deal that can make managing the costs easier, such as a few months’ payments free.

Meeting Your Power Needs

The easiest way to meet all of your power requirements while still relying on a generator or solar panel system is to do without. Hand-wash your dishes, line dry your clothes, and wash them by hand, and you wont need to power any of these power-hungry appliances.

You could also switch to low-energy appliances so that even when you do use these appliances, you arent using as much power as a standard home would. Also, refrigerators can be smaller, reducing the amount of energy used to keep your food cool. After all, many of us dont even use most of the space in our large refrigerators anyway.

You could also switch from watching television to reading books, and you wouldnt have to worry about powering a TV either.

If youre worried about climate control, you could choose to live someplace mild. People living in Southern California never need heat or air conditioning. If you get a little cold, put a sweatshirt on. If you get a little too warm, take off a few layers and sit in the shade.

You could also consider switching to gas-powered appliances .

Gas heaters and gas refrigerators work just as well as electric ones, and they run on gas instead of electricity. Taking all of these steps could easily bring your power consumption needs down to 2 4 kWh per day.

Your life may be a little less convenient, but youll have less impact on the environment, and you wont have to worry about being connected to the grid.

How Many Kwh Can Solar Panels Produce And How Many Panels You Need On Your Roof

The Big Rise Of The Tiny House

The amount of power your solar energy system can produce depends on the number of solar panels that can absorb solar energy and convert it into electricity.

Assuming you are going to choose standard-efficiency solar panels, here are the most common sizes for residential solar systems and their kWh production potential to give you an idea of how many panels you would need to run a house.

    • A 3kW solar system which consists of 12 panels can produce an average of 4,200 kWh per year. You will need a roof space of about 194 sq ft for a 3kW system.
    • A 5kW solar system which consists of 20 panels can produce an average of 7,000 kWh per year. You will need a roof space of about 340 sq ft for a 5kW system.
    • A 10kW solar system which consists of 40 panels can produce an average of 14,000 kWh per year. You will need a roof space of about 680 sq ft for a 10kW system.

Keep in mind that the amount of power your solar system can produce depends on how much sunlight your roof receives and your location.

For example, California has more sunny days annually than Washington. In this case if you live in Washington you would need a bigger solar system to get the same power as you would get with a smaller system in California.

Connecting Your House To The Grid

If youve decided that being connected to the grid is the only way you can meet your power requirements, then youll need to set your tiny homes electrical system up like an RV.

Youll probably want to go with a 50 amp system so that you can run your laundry appliances, but you could go with a 30 amp system if youve decided not to use them.

With this setup, youll run AC power throughout your tiny house, and youll be able to plug in and use all of your electrical appliances to your hearts content.

If you also want to add a battery bank, you can put in a converter and an inverter so that youll have some power while traveling to and from your destination. This is also nice to have in case of an emergency or power failure, as youll at least be able to keep your refrigerator running.

For more information on connecting a tiny home to the grid, see my post titled, Do RVs Need to be Plugged In. This post goes over 30 amp systems, 50 amp systems, and even how to use a standard outlet to plug your tiny home into the grid.

Apply this RV knowledge to your tiny home, and youll learn everything you need to know about powering your tiny home.
