Each base kit includes solar panels to generate the power, an inverter to convert the DC power in the batteries to AC power for your appliances, and safety equipment like breakers and lightning protection. You can then select the solar panel mounting method you want, either on your roof or on the ground away from your house. Lastly, select the type of battery you want. Flooded lead acid requires maintenance and ventilation, sealed AGM batteries requiring no ventilation and minimal maintenance, and lithium batteries are safe and long lasting .

When Are Solar Panels Costs Lowest
Prices vary during the year. For example, between May 2020 and April 2021, prices per kW were highest in April, May and February and lowest between August and October, according to BEIS.
This doesn’t mean that solar panels are always cheaper in the summer though. Spring 2020 prices would have been impacted by Covid-19. In the previous year , the cheapest month was November.

- Tracking: $500-$3,000+ each. Follows the arch of the sun and provides maximum efficiency. The amount of energy you will be able to generate depends not only on panel construction and mounting, but your location. Though the initial cost for tracking is higher than other mounts, these can often get you the highest return on investment, as they make the most of every ray of sunlight. Track mounting may add 45% energy production.
Avoid Cheap Solar Panels
We cannot stress enough the importance of avoiding buying dirt-cheap solar panels. You risk not receiving your government solar rebate if the Clean Energy Council does not approve your panels and inverter and, if the installer is not accredited by the CEC. If you buy cheap panels, the risk that your system breaks down or underperforms is far greater. You may not have any recourse when it comes fixing a cheap system too, as the solar panel warranties may not cover the issue, or worse still, the company you bought them from may no longer be in business.

Using A Backup Generator
The other component of this system is the generator which I used for the first two years and then opted to upgrade my system because they were such a pain to use. In the winter months, I sometimes needed to top off my batteries every now and then, basically when its been really cold and very cloudy for a week or more.
I had a Honda EB2000i already which I really like. Its very quiet and small. The one downside to the Honda is that it only does 1600 watts and only 120V and I needed more power and 240V. To charge my batteries, I had to have 240 Volts, which lead me to get another generator, a 5500 watt 240 volt Generac for $650. This generator proved to be a major headache and lead me to upgrade my system just to not have to use it anymore.
