A 300 watt solar system has a VMP of 18 volts. The highest possible current is 16.6 amps as shown below.

300 / 18 = 16.6

We round this off to 20 amps, and the smallest wire size you can use is 12 AWG. The maximum distance is 3.5 feet, meaning the cable has to be 3.5 feet or shorter to remain within the 2% voltage drop.. For best results we recommend 10 AWG as it lets you use a longer cable.

The longer the cable you want to use, the thicker the wire gauge has to be. The following are for a 12V 300W solar system with a maximum current of 16.6 amps. Double the cable lengths if you are using a 24V 300W solar system, and quadruple it if you are on a 48 volts.

The longer the cable, the greater the performance loss. You can avoid this by using thicker AWG wires but those are expensive. This is the reason why the distance between solar cables are so important.

If you use a thin long wire the losses will increase. The size guide given here allows you to maintain voltage drops to within 2%, but those losses can reach 4% or more if you use long thin cables.

How Many Watts Of Solar Can Run On 10 Awg Wire

High-quality 10 gauge wire with 105-degree celsius insulation is rated with a max ampacity of 60A. Most MC4 connectors, on the other hand, have a max ampacity of 30A so we need to keep the array amperage below 30A and we can do that by wiring the array in series or series-parallel so the array has a lower amperage and a higher voltage.

This means that with an array amperage of 30A, feeding say 250V into a big SmartSolar MPPT 250|100 Using watts law of 30A x 250V this would actually give us an array wattage of 7500W of solar panels which is a LOT. In fact thats about 150% the max rated wattage capacity of that SmartSolar MPPTcharge controller when paired with a 48V battery bank. So the wattage of the arraydoesnt REALLY matter when trying to see if we can use 10 gauge wire.

So, if you are trying to design a solar array on your own use the technical methods I taught you earlier to double check that 10AWG is indeed large enough and again if 10 AWG isnt large enough consider re-working your array design to have more panels in larger series strings to boost the array voltage and lower the array amperage so you CAN use 10 AWG wire.

Recommended Inverter Cable Breaker & Fuse Sizing

Use this table to decide what size battery-to-inverter cables and overcurrent devices to use with your inverter. Remember the fuse and breaker are there to protect your cabling from overheating . You can use smaller cables but only if you in turn use a corresponding smaller breaker or fuse to protect the cable. However, using smaller cables and breaker than whats suggested can cause problems with your off-grid inverter because the breaker will repeatedly pop every time you surge beyond its capacity rating.

What Is The Ideal Gauge Of Solar Panel Wires

American Wire Gauge is the average scale used for wires. The residential usage and gauge are readily available on the internet with correspondence to the amperes. But here are some examples to make the work easy for you:

    In this case, you have to use a step-down MPPT charge controller capable of stepping the 24 V solar panel voltage down to 12V.

    Why MPPT charge controllers?

    Why not using the low-cost PW controller you might ask?

    Because the MPPT charge controllers convert the voltage difference between 24V solar panel and 12V battery bank to an increase in its output current that is twice higher compared to using a PWM charge controller.

    With this twice higher current, the power provided at the output of the MPPT controller would be almost two times higher compared to the usage of a step-down PWM controller.

    Max Current Within Battery Bank

    You will need to determine how many amps will flow through interconnecting cables of the battery bank. This involves some basic understanding of series-parallel wiring and how it affects volts and amps. I will assume you have that basic understanding

    First, we know that in my example there may be up to 175 amps pulled from the battery bank . However I have 6 series-strings of batteries all in parallel, so only one sixth of the maximum will flow through any one string as the strings share the load. So that works out to be around 30 amps flowing through each of the six strings.

    That said, I try not to live on the edge, and always oversize with a margin.

    Actually, for my current installation Ive sized all of my DC cables to meet the 175 amp worst case scenario. Because I had the cable. So all interconnecting cables are 00 AWG based on the chart below.

    My interconnecting cables within my battery bank I ended up making my own after buying some pre-made. This saved some money. I did need 00 AWG for the main trunk, but went WAY overboard on my series-strings interconnects. I used the same cable . Instead I couldve used something like 6 AWG, even with a 50% margin. Oh well at least theres no worries with the 2/0 !
