How Long Should You Charge A Power Bank
You should only charge your power bank for the amount of time it takes for it to get a full battery. Once the device is fully charged, you should unplug it from the power source. You can check the user manual to find out how your power bank indicates it has been fully charged, but most of them have some sort of light that shows the amount of power left in the battery.
The amount of time it takes for a power bank to reach its full capacity varies depending on the type. A heavy-duty power bank will take longer to charge than a smaller one. Generally speaking, it takes between 1 to 2 hours for a power bank to become fully charged!

The Best Power Bank Solar Chargers
When shopping for a solar power bank, check the capacity of the battery. Itll tell you how many times you can charge your phone and other devices before you need to recharge the power bank.
Also, check the size of the solar panel in watts. If youll be relying a lot on solar charging, make sure the power bank comes with a minimum 10W solar panel. 20W and above is even better.
You can also buy the power bank and solar charger separately. This lets you pick an adequately sized solar charger like the 40W X-Dragon one I mentioned above or this 28W one from BigBlue.
Check out our guide for solar powered phone chargers. It includes reviews of highly rated power bank solar chargers as well as stand-alone solar chargers .
You might also want to consider getting a portable solar generator instead of a power bank.
A portable solar generator can charge your phone or power bank several times over and most can be connected to a large solar panel for fast solar charging.

There Is No Such Thing As A Magic Battery Pack
Unfortunately, no battery pack has been invented that magically recharges itself when itsempty. But on the whole, they are pretty simple to charge.
If you need one immediately, check on the package if its ready to use when you buy it.Some will need to be charged at home before they can be used.
To charge, plug the supplied cable into the input port on the battery pack. Attach the other end, usually a standard USB, into a wall charger or other power source.
Battery pack input ranges from 1Amp up to 2.4Amps. Putsimply, the bigger the input number, the faster it will recharge. Most wall chargers deliver upto 2.4Amps, but its worth checking the charger if youre in a hurry, as a 1Ampcharger might take twice as long.
Some battery packs have an LED indicator, which tells you how much power the battery pack hasleft. This will tell you when you need to recharge the battery.

How To Charge A Solar Power Bank Using Electricity
Plug your power bank into USB charger using a wall outlet or to a computer using a USB cord. The LED indicators will dazzle with flashing lights to indicate that the power bank is charging.
The LED indicators will come on with blue flashing lights, or green light, depending on model, when exposed to the sun or when charging with with a USB cord. The flashing indicators will vary as the charging progressively completes. How long to charge power bank for depends on capacity. Charging with electricity/USB takes about 6-12 hours depending on the model. The result you get depends on whether or not the phone being charged is switched on or off. Phones consume energy to remain on, hence will take longer to charge up. Note that the solar panel mainly provides emergency backup and the main priority is to recharge the power bank on exposure to sunlight. It takes about 40 90 minutes to fast charge a smartphone, using the HG power bank usb cord, depending on the phone. Other USB cords may not be as fast but if you must use other brand USB cords, ensure they are at least USB 2.0.

Read the user manual
As with any tech product you buy, first things first, read the user manual.
Even though solar power banks are easy to use, and you may want to rip them out of there, be mindful.
Ask yourself some user-friendly questions how do I preserve the performance, battery life, and capacity of my solar power bank?
All your answers will be found in the user manual.
Know When Your Solar Power Bank Is Fully Charged
Usually, power banks have a light indicator to indicate how charged they are.
- 1 light = 25% charged
- 3 lights = 75% charged
- 4 lights = 95% charged
Most solar power banks do not give 100% readings for safety reasons, its important you do not overcharge your power bank.
Make sure you recharge your solar power bank before its completely drained. Power banks that are completely drained require more energy to get going again, as opposed to a solar power bank charging from 50%.

Why People in Massachusetts Prefer this Portable Battery Pack
“Charge up at home, then use the solar panel to extend the stations battery a bit longer with some extra sun power.”
1. Its battery capacity is more than enough
With a powerful capacity of 10,000 mAH, this battery pack can charge a new generation iPhone 3 times over. This is more than enough to keep your essential devices powered up throughout the day.
We have found that most other battery packs on the market often lie about the capacity of the charger. You will often see battery packs advertising a 30,000 mAH, but it is not legitimate. You can trust that this battery pack has been tested and certified to have 10,000 mAH.
2. It charges via USB and Solar
The device can be quickly charged via USB before leaving home, and the battery life can be supplemented by the built in Solar Panel.
Adventurers often place the device on their backpack like in the photo above, so that the device is constantly being charged by the solar light above.
3. Robust & Durable
This power bank is exceptionally robust & durable, and has been put through numerous tests through customers around the world. It has been dropped onto concrete from high distances with no damage, making it perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who may face unpredictable environments.
Dont Use A Wireless Charger
Wireless chargers are a genius invention, but theyre not the best option if your goal is to charge your phone quickly. Plugging your phone in directly to a power bank or outlet is the quickest way to bring it back to life because its directly connected to the power source!
At the end of the day, any way you can prevent your phone from using battery while charging will ultimately help it charge faster! You might also notice your phone charging slowly with a low-capacity power bank. Be sure that your phone and power bank are compatible for the most efficient charging.
Solar Power Bank Charging Time In Direct Sunlight
Now you have a better idea of how and when solar power banks work best how long does it actually take to charge one?
As it will start getting too complicated when factoring in shade and cloud I will just assume you have access to constant direct sunlight.
Solar power banks also come in many different shapes and sizes. This will affect the charging time because the size of the battery varies.
The capacity of the battery is measured in milliampere-hours . You will see this in the description of the product before you buy it. It can vary from a few 2000mAh to 15,000mAh or more.
So I could give you lots of equations here allowing you to calculate the exact time it would take to fully charge your solar power bank, factoring in shade and sunlight intensity but I dont think that would be very useful.
The reality is that most manufacturers actually advise against trying to fully charge your solar power bank using the sun alone. The small panel can only generate so much power, even when in full sunlight and most power banks now have a very high battery capacity.
Below are a few examples of solar power banks and charging times in the sun estimated from manufacturers and user feedback:
- PEALIKER 30 hours to fully charge in the sun
- OUTXE 50 70 hours full charge
- ADDTOP Solar Charger 4 Panels much quicker some claim 4 hours in direct sunlight but the manufacturer says 25-50 hours

Can I Charge My Power Bank Overnight
You should avoid charging your power bank overnight whenever possible. It is unlikely to cause significant damage, but there is still a chance it could reduce the lifespan of your battery over time.
For lower-quality power banks, leaving your power bank plugged in after it is fully charged can cause overheating, especially if they are left to charge in direct sunlight. The safest option is to always unplug your power bank once it has reached full capacity!

Charging Your Device With Your Solar Power Bank
Once your solar power bank is fully charged, youll want to charge your device with it.
You can do this by connecting the USB end of your charger to the power bank, and inserting the other end into your device.
Most power banks have multiple USB ports for charging many devices at once, look out for these ports on the front of your solar power bank.
Something to take into consideration is the Amp output of your charging ports. Make sure that the ports you charge your smartphone with are only 1 amp.
Charging your smartphone with 2 amps may damage the battery life over time as its too fast for phones. Read the user manual to find this information out.
How To Maintain A Solar Power Bank
Solar power banks don’t require much maintenance beyond taking good care of it.
Be careful not to drop it or hit it against objects especially if you travel often with the power bank. If the power bank did not come with a travel case, consider getting one.
Also be careful about exposing the power bank and solar charger to rain, snow, and extreme temperatures. These elements can damage the integrated solar panel or the power bank itself.
Check the manual for the recommended charging and operation temperature range. If its too hot or too cold, avoid charging and discharging the power bank.
Talking of temperature, limit how often you use pass-through charging. This is where you charge your phone with the power bank while the power bank is also charging.
It can make the battery heat up, significantly reducing its performance and lifespan.
Finally, always use the approved cables. Unless the manufacturer insists in the warranty on using their cables, you can often use third party cables but only from reliable brands.
Cheap cables don’t last long and they can damage your solar power bank.

Can I Use My Phone While Charging On Power Bank
You are able to use your phone whilst charging your solar power bank.
However, doing this generally results in the battery being inline with the smartphone. This causes a higher power draw which leads to excessive heating which could damage your battery.
This is not recommended. Only do it if absolutely necessary.
Read your manual to find out what your manufacturer recommends. they usually know how best how to use a solar power bank.
How To Use A Power Bank Solar Charger
You use a solar power bank the same way you would a regular power bank.
When you first receive it, charge it to 100% via USB. You can plug the USB charger into a wall adapter or the USB port of a solar generator.
I do not recommend charging via solar for the first time as it will take too long.
Once the power bank is at capacity, you can plug in your phone and other devices into one of the USB ports.
Tip: Your power bank likely has LED indicators that will tell you when the battery is full. Check the user manual for guidance on what the various indicators mean.
Most power banks have multiple USB ports, so you can charge multiple devices at the same time.
The solar charging feature is handy and gives you free power, but save it for when you have no other choice.
Its great if theres no power at home or when you go camping or hiking. You can also use solar charging to keep the power bank topped up.
For instance if you are going hiking, you charge the power bank at home via USB then use the built-in solar panel when on the trail to extend the power banks battery life.
There are different kinds of solar panels on solar power banks. Some are integrated onto one side of the power bank. These solar panels are usually small and produce very little power.
Our favorite are solar power banks with foldable solar panels. These solar panels are bigger, but can be folded so they don’t take up much space.
