Tailwind Tip: If you cant find the icons or features discussed in this article, it may be time to head to the App Store or Google Play store and update your Instagram app!
Using A Background Image That You Already Downloaded To Your Gallery
For those of you who want to be more creative and dont want to limit yourself to a single color change, this is how you use an existing photo or downloaded photo as your Instagram Story background
- Open Stories
- Swipe up to access your gallery or tap on the gallery button
- Find the image you want to use as your background
- Select it and add it to your Story
- After youve done this, copy the image of your choice from your gallery using the same steps from the previous section. Then you can paste it on top of the image youve chosen as the background.
Whats cool about this is that your new background can be anything from an existing photo to stock images, gradients, or cool patterns.
Tip : Create A Solid Colored Background
If you want a solid colored background, you can make one yourself by taking advantage of the pen tool. Open Instagram, tap on the top-left camera icon or swipe right to access your Stories camera, and either snap a photo by hitting the shutter button or upload a photo you want to take a color from. Anything works.
Next, tap on the draw icon on the top right, then the marker icon , and either select a color from the bottom of the screen or tap on the color picker tool and select a color from the photo.
- Don’t Miss:
Once you’ve selected a color , hold your finger down on the screen for a few moments until it fills with that color. You can now write text over the solid colored background.
Additionally, you can use the eraser icon to show off a bit of the picture underneath. If you upload a video and place a solid color over it, the eraser tool can show sections of the video as well. Hit “Done” when you’re finished and send the photo to your Story.

Changing The Background Color When You Share A Story You Were Tagged In
If someone tags you in a story and you choose to share the story, changing the background color is much easier. While using the draw tool on your own photo from your camera roll will allow you to cover the photo with color, when you share another personâs story, the draw feature can only color behind the photo.
So, this means you can use any marker setting and scribble away. Whether you choose to fill the entire screen in opaque marker, or use the transparent highlighter marker, the photo will remain totally visible over the color. However, this also means that you cannot overlay the marker over the photo itself.
Adding The Media To Your Story
