What Parents Need To Know

Parents need to know that Free Solo is a documentary about climber Alex Honnold, who attempts to scale the 3,000-foot El Capitan in Yosemite, California, without any ropes or safety gear. The actual climb itself is a monumental sequence — and a testament to perseverance — but other parts of the movie may not sit well with all viewers, including Alex’s distant nature and laid-back attitude about death. Still, the film is worth watching for the amazing finale. Expect to hear discussions about death and see the faces of other climbers who fell and died. Language includes a use of “f–k,” plus “s–t,” “a–hole,” and a few others. Alex is shown being affectionate with his girlfriend and preparing to move in together, but there’s nothing remotely graphic. Someone makes a spoken reference to cigarette smoking.

What Is Free Solo About

National Geographics documentary on free soloist climber Alex Honnold grossed over $21 million and took home accolades from the Toronto International Film Festival, the Critics Choice Documentary Awards, the National Board of Review, Cinema Eye Honors, the British Academy Film Awards, the Oscars , and the Emmys.

This astonishing portrait documents Honnolds fulfillment of a lifelong dream:” scaling Yosemite National Parks 3,000-foot El Capitan without a rope or safety harness.

After his standard breakfast of oats, flax, chia seeds, and blueberries, Honnold started the ropeless ascentknown as free soloingat the first light of dawn, 5:32 a.m., and pulled himself over a rocky lip to the summit, a sandy ledge, 3 hours and 56 minutes later, USA Todayreported in June of 2017. The climb, which National Geographic said may be the greatest feat of pure rock climbing in the history of the sport, was captured by a team of filmmakers, led by Jimmy Chin, one of Honnolds longtime climbing partners, and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi.

The secret of success? Self

Adapted from the book of the same name, the film follows the life of Christopher McCandless, who decided to give up his modern-day lifestyle, hitchhike to Alaska, and live off the land in the wilderness.Sean Penn wrote, directed, and produced the film, while Emile Hirsch stars as McCandless. In September 2007, Matthew Powers wrote an article in Mens Journal that examined the circumstances surrounding McCandless, digging into the science behind what might have killed him after spending over 100 days in the wild. Is Free Solo On Netflix After Winning The Oscar For Best Documentary Free Solo Would Make A Great Addition To Netflix But Its Not Streaming Yet

Free Solo won the Oscar for Best Documentary at the 2019 Oscars, and now, everyone is trying to find a way to stream the documentary. Netflix is, and probably always will be, the place most people look first to find a new movie like Free Solo.

While Solo: A Star Wars Story is available to stream on Netflix right now, the Oscar winner Free Solo is not available to stream yet, and it might not be available to stream at all.

Free Solo is produced and distributed by National Geographic Documentary Films, and as far as I could tell, the company has no output deal with Netflix, HBO, Hulu or any other streaming service. That means the rights to the film will be licensed individually to the highest bidder unless something was previously agreed upon.

Well likely have to wait until after the Oscar fallout and the documentarys premiere on the National Geographic Channel on Sunday, March 3. You can rent or buy the documentary from an SVOD service and watch it on demand, but thats the first time the documentary will air on the National Geographic Channel.

Typically, most major documentaries and documentary series do end up on Netflix, but it sometimes takes a while before the film is available. In the age of streaming, theres a lot more competition for these documentaries, and that makes it much more difficult to figure out where this documentary will land first.

Last September, we declared Free Solo to be the best climbing movie ever made. Now, it’s bagged another prestigious achievement. Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chins film documenting climber Alex Honnolds historic rope-free ascent of El Capitan’s Freerider in Yosemite took home the statue for Best Documentary Feature at this years Academy Awards.

Free Solo follows Honnold as he prepares for the climb and deals with the circus of being the sports most recognizable figure, someone whos been living mostly out of a van suddenly having a camera following his every move for months on end. Its that insight into Honnold that forces the audience to confront bigger questions about life, death, and risk-taking and make this much more than just another climbing flick.

In an interview with Outside in September 2018, Vasarhelyi described the film as a story about this kid who is so scared of talking to other people that it was easier for him to climb alone, with no ropes, than to ask for a partner. I feel like we all have something in our lives like that. It was really important to see Alexs eyes before he did it. What did his eyes look like the morning he set off?

Is It Any Good

This documentary’s final 20 minutes capture a truly monumental moment in human achievement, but it’s not particularly outstanding or revealing in depicting Honnold’s day-to-day life. He’s a problematic subject: He’s distant and unemotional and perhaps even a little arrogant, and Free Solo has very little idea how to really explore these human factors. It tries to capture ordinary life moments, but the camera setups often draw too much attention to themselves. The movie also eavesdrops on Alex and Sanni as she patiently tries to come to grips with his laid-back attitude about dying, but it doesn’t really seem to understand Sanni’s side of things. Free Solo seems more focused on hero-worshipping Alex, with his warrior’s way of life.

Marco Beltrami’s score likewise tries to add some emotional pull to the film’s early sequences but never quite works, although the suspenseful music during the last act is outstanding. Directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin , Free Solo is, ultimately, a movie that knows mountain climbing. The filmmakers clearly love dropping all of the insider terms for various handholds and footholds, and other experienced climbers are interviewed, as are professional climbing camera operators and professional climbing journalists. All these little details add up to an intensely gripping finale that’s guaranteed to make palms sweat — and makes the whole venture worthwhile.

Here’s where you can watch the Oscar-winning doc

Free Solo took the award circuit by storm in 2019, eventually winning the Oscar for Best Documentary and also snagging the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards for Best Sports Documentary and Most Compelling Living Subject of a Documentary for the movie’s star, climber Alex Honnold.

In the movie, Honnold attempts to scale El Captain, a massive cliff at Yosemite National Park, in a “free solo” climb, aka, one without the use of any ropes, harnesses, or other protective equipment. And spoiler alert, he eventually does. But knowing that he makes it to the top doesn’t take away from the actual nail-biting experience of watching him climb a 7,573-foot rock. It’s honestly terrifying! But it makes for a compelling story to watch from the comfort of your own home.

Free Solo Airs On Natgeo This Weekend

National Geographic Documentary Films produced Free Solo, and will bring it to television exactly one week after it won the Academy Award for best documentary feature film, and three weeks after it won the BAFTAthe British Academy of Film and Television Artsfor documentary film.

The film aired commercial free on National Geographic Channel Sunday, March 3, at 9 p.m. ET, and will re-air March 10 at 10 a.m. ET.

If you cant wait, Free Solo is still in some theatres, and is currently , iTunes, Google Play, and elsewhere.

Its also now watchable on NatGeos site.

In the movie, directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin followed Alex Honnolds attempt to climb the side of Yosemite National Parks El Capitan without ropes and with only his bare hands.

Their ability to capture that climb in such close-up, intimate detailNatGeo calls it exquisite artistry and masterful, vertigo-inducing camerawork was also a significant feat, and was possible thanks to a team of filmmakers that included some accomplished climbers.

They were also filming in a National Park, which also had its own challenges, including that drones are not permitted inside National Parks, so those couldnt be used.

But the film is about much more than just the one climb.

As one of the cinematographers, Clair Popkin, told TV critics at the Television Critics Association press tour:
