How Can Solar Certifications Shape Hiring New Employees

Owners of solar companies may struggle to find qualified solar installers and often need to train new hires. Applicants with related certifications distinguish themselves from other candidates by showing a certain amount of knowledge and experience.

Also, having employees with certifications can help solar companies stand out in the market by going above and beyond what is required. Unfortunately, NABCEP-certified professionals are in high demand and are often difficult to find. Often companies pay for their employees to seek certification.

Another helpful strategy when hiring new employees is to look for trades professionals with related experience. For example, roofers often have transferable skills and are likely comfortable working at higher heights. Such experience may make it easier to train new hires and turn entry-level installers into experts more quickly.

How Do I Start An Application

To begin an application for all NABCEP Board Certifications, you are required to first create a myNABCEP account if you do not already have one.

Responsibilities Of A Solar Installer

As a solar installer, these are some of your responsibilities:

  • Inspecting, installing, maintaining, and configuring all types of solar PV systems
  • Detecting hazards and analyzing the environments for solar PV system installations
  • Mapping out ideal locations and positioning for each component of the solar PV system
  • Sealing the solar PV system against weather conditions
  • Adhering to manufacturing specifications and all safety codes
  • Terminating, installing, and labeling electrical wiring
  • Making adjustments as necessary to all system controls
  • Checking the PV system and measuring all grounding systems

Why Is Solar Panel Testing Important

Solar panel testing is key to assuring both the quality and safety of a module. Solar panels have a long lifespan: properly built and installed equipment should generate usable electricity for more than 25 years. Given the longevity of your investment, you want to make sure that any equipment on your roof will perform well and operate safely on your roof.

With solar becoming more and more popular each day, many states, local governments, and utility companies have come out with new mandates that require any grid-tied solar equipment to hold specific certifications. The same holds true for some solar incentive programs if youre participating in a state-funded incentive program, dont be surprised if they have certain testing or certification requirements for your chosen equipment.

    What Do Solar Installers Do

Solar Photovoltaic panels convert sunlight to electricity.

A solar installer puts these systems in place.

There are multiple ways to become a solar photovoltaic installer, often called PV installers or solar installers.

They use a variety of hand and power tools to install photovoltaic panels.

They often use tools like drills, wrenches, saws, and screwdrivers to connect panels to frames, wires, and support structures.

Most new solar installers begin by performing basic simple tasks such as installing support structures and placing PV panels on top of them.

Once the panels are in place, technicians or more-experienced solar installers usually perform more-complex duties, such as connecting electrical components and equipment.

Depending on the job and prerequisite state laws, PV installers may connect the solar panels to the electric system, although electricians sometimes perform this duty.

Once the panel is installed in place, installers check the electrical systems for proper wiring, polarity, and grounding.

They also perform routine maintenance as needed.

You may be required at least a high school diploma or equivalent to gain an entry-level position as a solar installer.

From there, you will learn how to install and maintain solar panel systems on the job for over a year.
