If you have a large 200AH lithium battery, the calculation would be as follows:
200AH Lithium Battery x 12V = 2400WH
1440WH / 8H = 300W of solar panels.
My rule of thumb with solar is that you can never have too much there will be times of the year when you will not get 8 hours of sunlight, there will be overcast days and other factors that prevent you from getting a full day of solar.
Using the above calculation will give you a rough guide as to what you need at a minimum however, it is recommended that you always have more than the minimum.
Another consideration is how much of your battery power do you use in a 24 hour period, if you are only using 50% of the capacity then your solar requirements reduce by 50%.

What Size Solar Panel Do I Need
Solar Panels power generation is commonly given in Watts e.g. 120 Watts. To calculate the energy it can supply the battery with, divide the Watts by the Voltage of the Solar Panel.
120 Watts / 18v = 6.6 Amps
Please note that Solar Panels are not 12v, I repeat Solar Panels are not 12v. Any one who works out the Amps of a solar panels using 12v as the voltage calculation does not understand solar or has been misinformed. All solar panel voltages should be marked in the item description of our website or on the unit itself.
The size of the solar panel required to charge a lithium battery depends on the lithium battery’s capacity.
Sunlight Really Makes It
The next thing that determines how much power you end up getting from your panels is how much sunlight you get. There is no way you are going to escape the sun, but that does not mean sunlight doesnt vary depending on the region where you live. It might be a good idea to determine the amount of sunlight you get using a sunlight calculator available online.
Then, you want to make sure you install your panels in the best possible location. Determine which side of your home gets the most sunlight, and make sure your panels are facing that way.
It should also be pointed out that the roof is perhaps one of the best locations for your panels. Those with trees may want to make sure you have them removed or altered to ensure they do not shade your panels too much.

The overall efficiency of a panel simply tells you that a particular panel can convert sunlight to electricity optimally. There are some panels that are able to make more available electricity than others, which is why quality matters when it comes to panels.

Wiring PV Panel to UPS-Inverter, 12V Battery and 120-230V AC Load
In this very basic solar panel wiring installation tutorial, we will show how to connect a solar panel to the AC load through UPS/Inverter, charge controller. You will also know how to connect the PV panel to the battery and direct DC load as well.
We have used a single unit system i.e. an 120W, 12V solar panel, 100Ah, 12V battery and 120/230V Automatic UPS for auto ON/OFF operation of the system. You will need all the four basic components of a solar panel installation system e.g. PV panel, solar charge controller , battery and an inverter.
The PV panel wiring can be used for both AC & DC loads. AC load can be powered by UPS/Inverter where it uses the storage energy in the battery as backup power. It can also be used without the battery if you dont need the backup power later at night or shading. This way, the solar panels will direct power up the AC load via Online UPS. In addition, the DC load can be directly connected to the charge controller .
The following solar panel wiring diagram shows that an 120W, 12V solar panel is directly connected to the 12V charge controller. Battery and inverter are connected to the battery terminals of the charge controller. DC load is also connected to the DC output terminal of the charge controller. The 120V or 230V AC load is connected to the UPS output terminals.

A solar regulator must be able to handle the maximum current that can be produced by the solar panels.
Reflected sunlight and specific temperature conditions can increase the output current of a solar panel by as much as 25% above it’s rated output current. The solar regulator must be sized to handle the increased current.
Solar regulators often short the solar panel input when regulating. This does not damage the solar panel, but it does mean that the solar regulator must be sized to handle 125% of the solar panel’s rated short circuit current.
A BP Solar 80W solar panel has a rated output current of 4.55 Amps and a rated short circuit current of 4.8 Amps.
Minimum solar regulator size for a single BP Solar 80W panel would be: 4.8 Amps x 1.25 = 6 Amps.
It is recommended that the regulator selected is even slightly larger than this figure to ensure that it is not constantly operating at 100% of its rating, particularly in regions with higher ambient temperatures.
